5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny-- with rare nuggets & variety, November 30, 2008
By
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This box set is a great find. It combines Anne's great pop smashes (You Needed Me,the David Foster produced Now & Forever (You & Me), the duet Nobody Loves Me like You Do (with Dave Loggins), Carole King's Time Don't run out on Me, Snowbird, I Just Fall in Love Again, etc... , the country classics (Just Another Woman in Love, Tennessee Waltz, He Thinks I Still Care, Could I Have this Dance, the always timely A Little Good News), but the real gems are the hard to find cuts like the beautiful A Million More, the touching Son of a Rotten Gambler, the uptempo Things, her very first hit What about Me (pre-dates Snowbird), the fabulous duet with Glen Campbell (I say a Little Prayer/ By the Time I get to Phoenix), the powerful We Don't Have to Hold Out, the best version of Killing Me Softly with His Song that exists on this planet, the happy-inducing Walk Right Back, and the beautiful I Don't Think I'm Ready for You (co-written by Burt Reynolds a great fan of Anne's). In brief, this is a great find-you will not regret it. A must have for any serious music collector. Anne Murray is the best female vocalist that has ever-and will ever-live--she can sing the phonebook and make it sound great.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Snowbird, March 2, 2009
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
March 2, 2009

I watched a rerun tonight which featured a female vocalist that all the kids are talking about. She has an extremely interesting look but those of us who were here throughout the 1970's still listen to incomparable female vocalists including Helen Reddy, Rita Coolidge, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight and of course, perhaps the leader of the pack, Canada's own Anne Murray. The aforementioned female vocalists were all beautiful women but simply having the slim bodied look is what we have today versus what Anne Murray gave our generation which was massive and unmitigated vocal finesse we might never see again. Anne Murray songs on this box set that I still listen to today include Danny's Song, Daydream Believer (a Monkees Davy Jones cover), A Love Song.Anne's signature song is Snowbird, a classic and after all Anne Murray is "The Snowbird". I adored the properties of her vocals. There was a little bit of contralto mixed with country of course and a noticeable component of syrup sort of like the feminine version of Brook Benton's Rainy Night in Georgia. Anne started out to learn some form of physical training so her appearance came across even more alluring than our present aspiring singers. While crooner was an older person's summary of Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Russ Colombo et al, I believe Anne Murray to have some of that going because her music flowed out so mellifluously and sensually that she was the real article. If Anne Murray makes a come back and tours come to Long Island I will be there when my rooster crows. Nobody would ever attempt to judge Anne or any of the female wunderkinds above because they achieved their phenomenal success at the behest of the listeners. Our music industry needs to develop maybe 5 Anne Murray's in 2009 probably working with innovative A&R methods and sound perception. No matter what your age or station in life may be I fervently and unequivocally recommend that you purchase this Anne Murray Box set,it's simply outstanding. 5.0 out of 5 stars It's all RIGHT HERE (and THEN SOME!), May 17, 2011

This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Better than "Greatest Hits" from 1980, better than "Now and Forever," the career-spanning boxed set from 1995, better than "The Best...So Far" and better than any and/or ALL of Murray's other single disc collections, is THIS, a 3-disc compilation of not only the "hits," but of some other rare gems as well! The only downside is the inclusion of a duet w/Glen Campbell, the very tired medley of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix/I Say A Little Prayer for You." Other than this, you have 3 hours+ of some of the finer moments of her 30 year plus repertoire. You can't go wrong for the price and if there's anything missing, her awesomely remastered Signature Series two-fers are available here on Amazon as well, which will no doubt satisfy ANY Murray cravings. Another downside is the absence of any booklet, where "Now and Forever" includes one, however, with THAT SET, you're also getting a lot of filler along with a ridiculously unnecessary Spanish version of her mega-hit, "Broken Hearted Me" from 1979's masterpiece, "I'll Always Love You" and an overdose of some sleep-inducing selections from her "Croonin'" sessions. For the low price and 3 discs, it's all RIGHT HERE (and THEN SOME!)
