Editorial Reviews

The Beach Boys' new 50th Anniversary Greatest Hits collection features 20 of the band's most popular songs, including "California Girls," "Good Vibrations," "Surfin' U.S.A.," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," "Kokomo," their latest single "That's Why God Made The Radio," and many more.

For five decades, America's first pop band to reach the 50 year milestone has recorded and performed the music that has become the world's favorite soundtrack to summer. Founded in Hawthorne, California in 1961, The Beach Boys were originally comprised of the three teenaged Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. In 1962, neighbor David Marks joined the group for their first wave of hits with Capitol Records, leaving in late 1963, and in 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring to focus on writing and producing for the group.

The Beach Boys signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin' Safari, that same year. The album spent 37 weeks on the Billboard chart, launching the young group known for its shimmering vocal harmonies and relaxed California style into international stardom. The Wilson/Love collaboration resulted in many huge international chart hits, and under Brian Wilson's musical leadership, the band's initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, making The Beach Boys America's preeminent band of the 1960s.

This collection along with the double disc "50 Big Ones" released concurrently is meant to commemorate fifty years since they first arrived on the music scene. It serves as both a good introduction and great summary of one of the most influential bands of the sixties. Sixteen of the tracks come from 1962-1967 - their most prolific period. A few more tracks could have been added but all of their major hits are here. Here's the track listing followed by the versions they appear in. All tracks were remastered in 2001 unless otherwise indicated.

That's Why God Made The Radio (Stereo-2012)
California Girls (2002 Stereo Mix)
Sloop John B (1996 Stereo Mix)
Wouldn't It Be Nice (Stereo)
Surfer Girl (Stereo)
Do It Again (Mono)
Surfin' Safari (Mono)
Surfin' USA (Stereo)
Don't Worry Baby (2009 Stereo Mix)
Little Deuce Coupe (Stereo)
I Get Around (Mono)
Fun, Fun, Fun (Mono)
Be True To Your School (Mono - Single version)
Dance, Dance, Dance (2003 Stereo Mix)
All Summer Long (2007 Stereo Mix) (not released as single in US)
Help Me, Rhonda (Mono - Single Version)
Rock And Roll Music (Stereo - Remastered 2000)
God Only Knows (1996 Stereo Mix)
Good Vibrations (Mono)
Kokomo (Stereo - 1988)

2012 was an important year for the Beach Boys as they celebrated their 50th anniversary, and celebrate they did. Mike Love, Brian Wilson, and Al Jardene laid their differences aside and were joined by long timer Beach Boys Bruce Johnston and David Marks to release a new album, That's Why God Made the Radio, to go on tour, to record that tour for a new Live album, and to release a new compilation, 50 Big Ones. Greatest Hits covers 20 songs, of which 19 of them are found on 50 Big Ones. Greatest Hits ends up being a mediocre effort to cash in on the Beach Boys anniversary. If you are going to purchase one compilation, 50 Big Ones should be purchased. If you do not want to spend for two cds, then Sounds of Summer offers 30 cuts leaving Greatest Hits a little wanting (even the artwork is identical to 50 Big Ones). What the Beach Boys should have done is release a third volume of songs to complement Sounds of Summer (2003) and The Warmth of the Sun (2007). Their library still have so many songs that deserve remastering like Drive-In, Our Car Club, Susie Cincinnati, Back Home, Kona Coast, Lady Linda, and California Calling while the albums Still Cruisin' (except for Kokomo) and Summer in Paradise have not been represented in a collection. Thus, if you are looking at one cd of Beach Boys songs, I recommend looking at Sounds of Summer or the two volume work 50 Big Ones, and leave this one on the shelf.

OK yes the Beach Boys have many Hits Albums Out, and a Box Set. so why buy this one? I did but I am a completest I have to have every Beach Boys release. So you have to decided if you need this one or not. If your a fan you probably already have all the songs, so you probably don't need it, if your a completest like me you will get this one as well. If your a new fan then this is a perfect start int the Beach Boys. They are simply the Funnest Rock Band of all time and this is a great selection of their hits.

The cd contained a good variety of their most popular hits. It was missing some of the music I would have like to have had and contained some music I was't interested in. All and all it was a decent value for the money.

new recordings?
All of the "hits" are previous recordings (2001 and earlier). There is one completely new song: "That's Why God Made the Radio" (Recorded and released in stereo 2012)
