NYC area Boomers may remember hearing (some 40-plus years ago) a couple of Bert Kaempfert's pop hits on local TV (I want to say Sandy Becker's WONDERAMA on Channel 5). These are "A Swingin' Safari" and "That Happy Feeling." In Beatles lore, Bert was the German POLYDOR record producer who gave the very young Beatles their first chance at professional recordings, with vocalist Tony Sheriden.

But to our parents, and probably to us kids riding in the back seat of the family automobile, tuned to a mellow old tube-type car radio as we rolled down the road, Bert Kaempfert's music was often a pleasant companion. I can recall watching my dad contentedly drumming his fingers on the steering wheel whenever the aforementioned tunes came on. At other times he skillfully whistled along to "Wonderland By Night" and "Red Roses For a Blue Lady." Fond memories are these. My father loved Bert K. and so do I.

As "Best of" records go, this dozen easy listening instrumentals first compiled and republished in 1966 is one of the very finest, especially for those of us who still remember.

TRIVIA: Bert was the composer of "Spanish Eyes" and "Strangers in the Night."
