Editorial Reviews

This a landmark Bessie Smith release. In that it is the first to concentrate purely on her 49 most popular recordings and to assume that if there where a chart then she would, as one of the most influential recording artists in History, without doubt have topped the charts. These recordings made between 70 and 80 years ago display a power and intensity undiminished by time recordings that still inspire vocalists the world over. As part of our Fabulous range it has been priced to attract both the collector and the curious and to invite people aboard the Bessie Smith fan club that still rolls along even after all these years.

Elsewhere in this space I have mentioned that in the early days of the blues, at least the recorded blues, women vocalists dominated the market. One thinks of Mabel Smith and Ma Rainey in that regard. But the queen of the hill, and the one still best remembered, for roaring out those barrel house blues is Bessie Smith. This little two-disc compilation gives a very nice beginner cross section of the kind of subjects that she sang about-mainly broken-hearted love, no good men and the trials and tribulations of being a black women on her own.

Bessie music also represents the place, as with Blind Willie McTell on the male side, where the blues go from the Saturday night juke joints of the farm, make that cotton, country to the more sophisticated Southern city locales. Furthermore, she along with Memphis Minnie were the queens of the now lost art of sexual double entendre- you know, 'put a little sugar in my bowl', 'take me for a buggy ride' and other classic lines of that type.

Be aware in listening to this compilation that the quality of the early recordings can be a liitle grating on the ear but bear with it because this thing just grows on you. It is rather an acquired taste but one you have the Bessie in your head you will not want to turn the damn thing off. Top selections here are a moanful , weary Empty Bed Blues, St Louis Gal, Preachin Man Blues that later singers have covered. All these recordings all the essentials to bring you up to speed on Bessie. No way, but go back the first sentence- you will be saving your pennies to get the next album to get others.

This is a classic blues vocal album. Recorded in the 1920's the quality of the sound it good if a little hollow. There are 49 tracks on two disks so there is a lot to get through

Bessie Smith represents the blues heard in urban clubs (quite possibly speakeasies during prohibition), as opposed to the blues found out in country juke joints, sometimes referred to as blind pigs, which was usually a traveling bluesman with a guitar (traveling light). It was the era of bootleg gin in the city, and possibly white lightning out in the country. Bessie Smith sang with a piano accompanyist, and sometimes some violin or other instruments such as a sax or coronet. Some other singers used mainly bands. The quality of these recordings is exceptionally good considering that the originals were produced on the old vinyl 78s, using 1920s era technology. With 49 tracks, this is an exceptionally good buy.

With a collection this large, some are always better than others. It is a slower blues as opposed to the jazzy blues some singers did later. The Piano playing can get a bit tedious. The songs rang from "Alexander's Ragtime Band" to "I Ain't Got Nobody" and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out." My main complaints are with the packaging. The jewel case could have been a better design, and the enclosed booklet is black lettering on a gray background (lots of luck with that). I would not use this for a gift, and perhaps (if you want quality packaging) you should look at some of the other options for her recordings - I suppose you get lower quality packaging with the lower price. There is over an hour of playing time on each CD. It might be a bit much to listen to at one shot (especially with that tedious piano). I still give it five stars for the value of the music (ignoring the packaging quality in the rating). I won't list all 49 tracks, as they are in the Amazon listing and I have no information to add on the musicians or playing venues.

I love Ms. Bessie Smith and this album is a great addition to my collection of music of the ladies of jazz of the 1930's & 1940"s.
