5.0 out of 5 stars AT LAST...A HUEY COLLECTION DONE RIGHT!!!
I agree with the first review, but to a point. Yes, some albums are underrepresented or not at all, BUT this hits disc is filled to the brim...79+ minutes, so they couldn't fit any more. Sure, they could fill a second CD with non-hits and fan faves, but this package is good value for money. They only had 3 hits missing from this package: "Walking On A Thin Line" (#18,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Andru Reeve sez: "Y'all Are Crazy."
How in the WORLD can anyone say this is a "complete package"? It's missing both singles from the first album -- "Don't Ever Tell Me That You Love Me" and "Sooner or Later (Some of My Lies Are True)". Both songs had cool videos made for them that were in pretty heavy rotation during the early days of MTV. And yet, the band and this collection almost pretend that the...

5.0 out of 5 stars AT LAST...A HUEY COLLECTION DONE RIGHT!!!, May 30, 2006
This review is from: Greatest Hits (CD + DVD Combo) (Audio CD)
I agree with the first review, but to a point. Yes, some albums are underrepresented or not at all, BUT this hits disc is filled to the brim...79+ minutes, so they couldn't fit any more. Sure, they could fill a second CD with non-hits and fan faves, but this package is good value for money. They only had 3 hits missing from this package: "Walking On A Thin Line" (#18, 1984), "Give Me The Keys (And I'll Drive You Crazy)" (#47, 1988), and "It Hit Me Like A Hammer" (#21, 1991)...the other hit off "Hard At Play", not the one mentioned that was missing. But really, if you have to leave hits off a package due to lack of room, the ones to cut should be those not as well-remembered as the others, and while those 3 are great songs, espesh "Walking", they are not as essential as the 21 that are. Yes, "Bad Is Bad" is only on the DVD, but I think that was a smart move, as the videoclip was more memorable than the song itself, and the song wasn't even a hit, let alone a single!!! Good move, so the song is represented on the package and not forgotten.

One of the reviewers is right...these songs never get old, they're still fun and kinda timeless, totally unpretentious. Perfect for the summer concert schedule, blasting in the car, on a boombox at the beach. They aged very well, and still have their unique appeal...a combination of Elvis Costello/Nick Lowe/Rockpile-ish new wave powerpop from the UK, with a strong dose of classic soul and doo-wop harmony. Two songs I feel represent their sound very well are "Working For A Living" and "If This Is It".

I have to be honest...I thought Huey & The News would be a guilty pleasure today, being I was an unhip cheesy radio fan back in the 80s with no clue as to what was good music, as opposed to now, and I felt cheesy picking this up. The song selection was too good to say no. Well, after immersing myself completely in this collection, Huey and the News overcame this stigma with class. I would say I was right all along!!!!

Plus, the videos DVD is totally fun, I admit it. Sure, there are clips missing, but it has the essential 9 that were played all over MTV...sometimes hilarious stuff...totally forgot about the horror movie/Frankenstein/Rocky Horror tribute "Doing It All For My Baby"...and of course "Bad Is Bad"...but the nice touches are the live in their prime from 1982 "Working For A Living" with the Tower Of Power horns, and the full-length "Power Of Love" from the "Back To The Future" DVD trilogy.

Totally worth the coin and a great value. I totally undermined this band, and now, I might actually get catalogue!!!! As for the first album not being represented at all...I agree it's a fun first album, but "Trouble In Paradise" IS on there, just in the rare live version from the rare, out-of-print "We Are The World" album.

There ya go, an honest review...and the cover of the deluxe version was a nice touch, from the "If This Is It" clip, of the News' heads sticking out of the sand, hahaha!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars This Is It, May 25, 2006
This review is from: Greatest Hits (CD + DVD Combo) (Audio CD)
There are often times where a good group can have a mediocre greatest hits record. And, there are other times where a better greatest hits record by a guily pleasure group can be just down the road. That has been the story with Huey Lewis & The News recently. Back in 1996 they had a good, but not completely over the top hits record with Time Flies. Although the record was good, there just could've been a whole lot more that should've been highlighted. Now, there is a new decade, and a better chance to hear this great guilty pleasure from the 80's in action all over again, on a new greatest hits record.

Huey Lewis & The News 2006 Greatest CD & DVD combo delivers as well as the regular-priced edition of this great 80's group. The collection includes a lot of great tracks that've been restrored and remastered from its original format well. The compilation includes so many great cuilty pleasure songs like If This Is It, Doing It All For My Baby, The Power of Love from Back To The Future, their breakout hit Do You Believe In Love, Stuck With You, and other great tracks. The collection adds on the feeling by showcasing tracks that were overlooked before from Time Flies like Hip To Be Square, Small World, and Jacob's Ladder. This edition also adds on the great classics by featuring a DVD compilation of some of the groups best videos like The Power Of Love, and Bad Is Bad which sadly was the only track that was overlooked on the CD where it was delivered on DVD.

All in all, Huey Lewis & The News Greatest is a welcomed edition to your record collection for anybody who loves the music of the 80's, or for anyone who has missed the Soul and Pop that this group brought from the 80's. I absolutely suggest this delightful record, and this is really it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent song solection BUT weak video selection and quality, March 4, 2007

This review is from: Greatest Hits (CD + DVD Combo) (Audio CD)
First off, I am a huge Huey Lewis and the News fan and was lucky enough to have seen them "back in the day" as a $5 bar band in the SF Bay Area. Although thought of as a pop band and dismissed and panned by many in the music business, HLN were and still are an excellent rock and roll band. They always put on a great show and Huey Lewis, himself, is a class gentleman. They certainly belong in the R&R Hall of Fame in my opinion.

That said, the DVD portion of this release is dreadful. There are numerous omissions such as "Back In Time" and "Some Of My Lies Are True" and "Perfect World". What is even worse is the quality of the video. I made a better copy of my HLN Video Hits using my VHS to DVD recorder! Whomever was in charge of the video portion should not pass go and not collect $200 for their work.

All in all, one can only hope for some great old stuff to get released like the live New Year's show from Japan and the remastered Video Hits collection. Thank goodness for my video to DVD recorder! If you are a true HLN fan, you have all the songs but wanted the DVD (like me). Sadly, you will be disappointed in the video quality but it is the only one out there so don't watch it on a HDTV!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Without repeating the other reviews...here's mine!, July 10, 2006
This review is from: Greatest Hits (CD + DVD Combo) (Audio CD)
As I try to fill my iPod with songs I know and love, I also get the chance to listen again to my favorite music. This music will always help define my memories in a way few things will. When I hear tunes from the Beatles or Herman's Hermits, I think of my childhood as I wasn't born until Beatlemania was already underway in the mid-60s. I have studied their times and music and became a musical follower of Paul and John and I always enjoyed any new releases they would provide us. So, once John was murdered it was clear there would be no reunion and my musical tastes would need to expand.

So needless to say much time has passed for me since high school and Huey's heyday, but what a great time it was for music. Huey Lewis was one of those bands I avoided until about late 1984 when Sports was the hottest album going next to some girl flash-in-the-pan named Madonna's self-titled album, (good stuff, too!). So after finally listening to I Want A New Drug and discovering it wasn't even a drug reference song (duh!) I decided to buy the LP. What a great decision! Early 1985, I bought my first CD player ($300 bucks!) and the CD. Then I found the other two CDs he had released and I have been a fan ever since. I even saw his Tour in 1989.

On this CD the only song from Huey's first album is the live version of Trouble In Paradise. Trust me, the live version is better than the studio version. It seemed Huey's first album was a bit faster tempo all the way around then his subsequent albums and it may be why the first album was a minor selling album. If you have the first album you'd here Some Of My Lies Are True and you might think you are hearing an early 80's punk band trying to play a ballad. LOL If you get the chance to hear Huey sing his songs from the first CD, live, you'd be in for a treat as he slowed them down a bit like the songs on Picture This and Sports as the group found their sound and beat and really put together some absolutely fun albums. I almost wish he would have pulled a Billy Joel (Songs in the Attic) and re-recorded his first album at a slower pace.

If you are in it just for the hit songs, then, THIS IS IT! There, I let you know. ;-)

If you are in it for a great collection, then you are Hip To Be Square.

If you just bought it for the videos but the CD also adds to your collection (like I did), then I am happy to be Stuck With You!

And you've just heard, The News! lol

As for the videos...
I'd like a whole collection of all the videos and maybe even the MTV concert he performed. Did you know, the very first live concert on MTV was Huey Lewis and The News? This was before Sports! It was the deciding factor for me that this band was great! They covered some great accapella, like Chain Gang and It's All Right. The odds at this point of a whole DVD of everything you ever wanted is probably just not going to happen. So, this will have to do! It is fun to see the old videos though and how us (the first MTV generation) had the chance to see our favorite bands in rotation and now to look back and wonder...what the hell happened to MTV? LOL I want my MTV! And I mean actual music television!

The bottom line is you can't beat the price for a DVD and CD set which has everything you would want and then some more. Great for parties and 80's reunions as well!

Huey Lewis & The News were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s', with a string of classic hits that still get heavy airplay today. Over the years, the band has been anthologized several times, but none of these compilations have gotten it right.

"Greatest Hits" compiles 21 classic Huey Lewis & The News tracks, including "The Heart Of Rock & Roll", "The Power Of Love", "Jacob's Ladder", "Stuck With You", "Do You Believe In Love", "Perfect World" and "Hip To Be Square" as well as many more classics. There's some lesser known stuff included here, such as their performance of "Trouble In Paradise" at the legendary Live-Aid concert, and Huey's duet with Gwyneth Paltrow on their cover of "Cruisin'" from the film "Duets". The sound quality is superb (good sound quality is a must when I buy a greatest hits compilation), and just about eveyr bit hit is here.

The cd also comes with a bonus dvd that contains several of their videos and a live performance from 1982 of "Workin' For A Livin'". This is a great compilation that belongs in anyone's record collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most underrated band of all-time, October 2, 2006

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Greatest Hits (CD + DVD Combo) (Audio CD)
Huey Lewis and the News wrote and performed some of the best rock and roll in the 80's and are still great to this day. In fact, they are still the most amazing live band you will ever see. What other band has the talent to sing 5-part acapella harmonies live perfectly every time, and also incorporate a great horn section, then a second later rock your socks off, they have it all IMO. The drummer Bill Gibson is killer, Mario's bass lines on this CD are amazing, Chris Hayes guitar playing is diverse, rockin', and tasteful, and Huey's got a likeable and convincing voice. But GREAT songwriting! These catchy, highly original songs are written and produced by the boys themselves, so you know they know what they're doing, a pro outfit for sure...Throw on "Back In Time" and it's impossible to be in a bad mood. You can practically see Marty McFly and Doc Brown in "Back to the Future" when you hear it. With songs like "Perfect World", "Heart and Soul", "The Power of Love", "I Want A New Drug", "Couple Days Off", "The Heart of Rock and Roll", etc. it's hard not to get hooked on this band. And they grow on you more over time. I'm not impressed easily, but this CD's audio remastering is amazing. Grab this CD/DVD combo and hear why Huey and his hard rocking News are one of the tightest ensembles in music history. I GUARANTEE you will not be able to take this out of your CD player for at least a couple of weeks, and that's what it's all about, you get your money's worth with this package. Go ahead, cough up the chump change and rock with the News.

Just what we have been wanting, a great list of hits, and thats what they are for the most part. Sure tons of great songs are missing but its a greatest hits cd. Good job of putting this together. I would love to have a few more of their videos and pay a little more, I miss the "Couple days off" vid. I just hope we get a second cd with hits and b-sides and fan favorites in the future. Keep up the good work Huey!
