Biography

Captain and Tennille are a husband and wife duo who were extremely popular back in the 70's and 80's with hits like "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "The Way That I Want To Touch You", "Shop Around" and "Muskrat Love". They met in San Francisco in 1971 when Toni(Tennille) needed a keyboard player for the musical she had co-written called Mother Earth. Daryl Dragon was recommended to her and he… Read more in Amazon's Captain & Tennille Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Fair Sampling of the Captain & Tennille's EARLIER music, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This cd contains a good sampling of the Captain & Tennille's first three albums. Noteably absent, however, are the cuts "Song of Joy", "Let Mamma Know", and the swingin' "Mind Your Love". Absent too, are the duo's late 70's hits from three post-"Greatest Hits" albums NOT represented in this collection. For example, there are no songs from the ablums: DREAM, MAKE YOUR MOVE, and KEEPIN' OUR LOVE WARM. In my opinion, the Captain & Tennille import cd SCRAPBOOK is a superior sampling of the Captain & Tennille's music which includes: "Do That To Me One More Time", "You Never Done It Like That", "Until You Come Back to Me", "Love On A Shoestring", and "Happy Together (A Fantasy)". SCRAPBOOK has all the early- to mid-70's hits, plus the late-70's hits NOT included on the "Greatest Hits" collection. SCRAPBOOK also contains some rare gems showcasing the duo's more mature sound in the late-70's and early-80's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Upbeat Pop With Hooks That Won't Let Go, May 19, 2000
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have mixed feelings about vocalist Toni Tennille and her husband-keyboard player Daryl "The Captain" Dragon. On the one hand their music could be as schmaltzy and as wholesome as anything ever recorded by Bobby Goldsboro, yet their music had such terrific hooks that you couldn't get their songs out of your head. [Don't get me wrong, I can be as sentimental as the next person, but Tennille's bashing of the rock culture made her sound too much like a poster child for the Republican Party.]

Their first million-seller "Love Will Keep Us Together" was No. One on the charts the week I got married so that song along with their other big hits evoke special memories for me. In the era before music videos each listener carried around in his own head the visuals that specific songs evoked. Their upbeat style resulted in three more million-sellers: "Lonely Night (Angel Face)," the Smokey Robinson remake "Shop Around" and "Muskrat Love" (a failed single for America three years earlier).

The Captain & Tennille can also take some credit for maintaining Neil Sedaka's resurgence in popularity in the mid-Seventies by covering his "Lonely Night" and "Love Will Keep Us Together"--listen to the fadeout for "Sedaka's back."

My only complaint: They had two more Top 40 hits on A&M after this compilation was released. Why couldn't this be updated to include "You Never Done It Like That" and "You Need a Woman Tonight"? At 42 minutes, there's certainly room on the disc. That complaint aside, this is a pleasant if not essential artifact of The Seventies. RECOMMENDED

5.0 out of 5 stars Great seventies pop, March 1, 2004
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This couple never made much impact in the UK but had several huge hits in America, where Love will keep us together topped the charts. This particular compilation is a straight reissue of their 1977 greatest hits album, therefore misses all their later hits including Do that to me one more time. However, this is an excellent set, compiled from their first three albums.

Among the American hits here are Muskrat love (originally recorded by the group America), Shop around (a cover of a Miracles song from the early sixties), Love will keep us together and Lonely night angel face (both written by Neil Sedaka). Circles, Can't stop dancing, Come in from the rain, We never really say goodbye and Disney girls are also wonderful, as are the covers of Wedding song (Petula Clark) and I write the songs (Barry Manilow).

If you enjoy the music of the Carpenters you will probably also enjoy Captain and Tennille's music. Whether this is the best compilation to buy is debatable, given that several other compilations have since been released that includes their later hits. However, this is an outstanding collection of their early music.
