Fair Sampling of the Captain & Tennille's EARLIER music,
By A Customer
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This cd contains a good sampling of the Captain & Tennille's first three albums. Noteably absent, however, are the cuts "Song of Joy", "Let Mamma Know", and the swingin' "Mind Your Love". Absent too, are the duo's late 70's hits from three post-"Greatest Hits" albums NOT represented in this collection. For example, there are no songs from the ablums: DREAM, MAKE YOUR MOVE, and KEEPIN' OUR LOVE WARM. In my opinion, the Captain & Tennille import cd SCRAPBOOK is a superior sampling of the Captain & Tennille's music which includes: "Do That To Me One More Time", "You Never Done It Like That", "Until You Come Back to Me", "Love On A Shoestring", and "Happy Together (A Fantasy)". SCRAPBOOK has all the early- to mid-70's hits, plus the late-70's hits NOT included on the "Greatest Hits" collection. SCRAPBOOK also contains some rare gems showcasing the duo's more mature sound in the late-70's and early-80's.

Upbeat Pop With Hooks That Won't Let Go,
By
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have mixed feelings about vocalist Toni Tennille and her husband-keyboard player Daryl "The Captain" Dragon. On the one hand their music could be as schmaltzy and as wholesome as anything ever recorded by Bobby Goldsboro, yet their music had such terrific hooks that you couldn't get their songs out of your head. [Don't get me wrong, I can be as sentimental as the next person, but Tennille's bashing of the rock culture made her sound too much like a poster child for the Republican Party.]Their first million-seller "Love Will Keep Us Together" was No. One on the charts the week I got married so that song along with their other big hits evoke special memories for me. In the era before music videos each listener carried around in his own head the visuals that specific songs evoked. Their upbeat style resulted in three more million-sellers: "Lonely Night (Angel Face)," the Smokey Robinson remake "Shop Around" and "Muskrat Love" (a failed single for America three years earlier). The Captain & Tennille can also take some credit for maintaining Neil Sedaka's resurgence in popularity in the mid-Seventies by covering his "Lonely Night" and "Love Will Keep Us Together"--listen to the fadeout for "Sedaka's back." My only complaint: They had two more Top 40 hits on A&M after this compilation was released. Why couldn't this be updated to include "You Never Done It Like That" and "You Need a Woman Tonight"? At 42 minutes, there's certainly room on the disc. That complaint aside, this is a pleasant if not essential artifact of The Seventies. RECOMMENDED

Great seventies pop,
By
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This couple never made much impact in the UK but had several huge hits in America, where Love will keep us together topped the charts. This particular compilation is a straight reissue of their 1977 greatest hits album, therefore misses all their later hits including Do that to me one more time. However, this is an excellent set, compiled from their first three albums.Among the American hits here are Muskrat love (originally recorded by the group America), Shop around (a cover of a Miracles song from the early sixties), Love will keep us together and Lonely night angel face (both written by Neil Sedaka). Circles, Can't stop dancing, Come in from the rain, We never really say goodbye and Disney girls are also wonderful, as are the covers of Wedding song (Petula Clark) and I write the songs (Barry Manilow). If you enjoy the music of the Carpenters you will probably also enjoy Captain and Tennille's music. Whether this is the best compilation to buy is debatable, given that several other compilations have since been released that includes their later hits. However, this is an outstanding collection of their early music.

Daryl & Toni Tennille Dragon's Greatest Hits,
By andy8047 (Nokomis,Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Daryl "The Captain" Dragon and his wife Toni Tennille bring their fans their very best on this album. They rose to superstardom in 1975 with their album LOVE WILL KEEP US TOGETHER,their debut. The title track from that album, written by Neil Sedaka and the late Howard Greenfield was the year's biggest hit. The song was first recorded by Sedaka for his 1974 comeback album SEDAKA'S BACK(he was a major star in the late 50's and early 60's). Also from LWKUT is THE WAY THAT I WANT TO TOUCH YOU,written by Tennille. From the same album is I WRITE THE SONGS by Beach Boy Bruce Johnston(Dragon was once a session keyboardist for The Beach Boys). That was a hit for Barry Manilow. SHOP AROUND by William "Smokey" Robinson, was a hit for his defunct group,The Miracles. WEDDING SONG(THERE IS LOVE) was written by Paul Stookey of Peter,Paul & Mary and was at first recorded by Stookey. DISNEY GIRLS is from LWKUT also. LONELY NIGHT(ANGEL FACE) was co-written by Sedaka and appears on his 1975 album THE HUNGRY YEARS. All the other songs are good.

Great introduction to C&T newbies,

This is the first Captain & Tennille album I've owned, but I'd heard nearly every song on it while growing up. That doesn't mean I cherish every one, but the familiar cheese always brings a smile to my face. I listen to this album frequently, and don't get tired of it--that doesn't happen often with my attention span. I highly recommend this collection as a jumping board for anyone who only knows "Love Will Keep Us Together." The woman had a fantastic voice--and the musical teamwork of the pair is something a lot of today's musicians should study closely. This album may not be timeless, but the quality of the artists on it definitely is.

Captain & Tenille Bashing? What's that all about?,

I'm a bit disturbed to read some of the reviews attached to this collection. Sure, C&T weren't exactly music pioneers, but their songs recall fond memories from my childhood...they're irresistible bubble gum, as was half the music released when they were popular. To say they were truly the worst songs ever is demeaning to the classic feel of these songs. Some of the most popular songs ever were completely stupid lyrically...but that doesn't mean they weren't good. I can only imagine that the majority of the people who "can't believe these songs were ever recorded" must be younger than me. These are a part of the 70's which, in itself, was a pretty ugly decade anyway (fashion and living). Take a sedative people, and enjoy the songs for what they're written for...simplicity at its finest.

Oh my gosh! I have looked *everywhere* for this CD and I finally found it! I was only 4 when the record was originally released, but when I got my (a-hem) record player this was the record that came along with it... once upon a time. I fell in love with the music and the songs and have looked for the CD for well over a year. It's a wonderful collection of "make you feel good" music and I look forward to playing it over and over again.

Who can remember the 1970s without thinking about the Captain & Tennille? In 1975 they released their debut album, Love Will Keep Us Together, and in 1976 they launched their short-lived (but excellent) variety show. They had met in 1971, when he was performing with the Beach Boys, were married in 1975, and are still together all of these years later - love did indeed keep them together. (I love a love story!)This album was originally released in 1977, and was re-released on CD in 1990. It contains twelve tracks, all of which show off Toni Tennille's wonderful voice, and Daryl "Captain" Dragon's mastery of the keyboard. All of my favorites are here, and the quality of the recordings is excellent. I love this CD, and highly recommend it to everyone who likes good music.

Love has kept them together.,

Okay, be honest, all of you who remember the 70s firsthand. How many of you saw the Captain & Tennille variety show? I actually taped them -- no, not with video tapes, because those weren't around then. I took my portable cassette player and sat it beside the speaker of my portable television. This was high tech for the 70s. I played those tapes endlessly. I wish I still had them.I collected as a child the 45s and LPs of the Captain & Tennille. Okay, I will embarass myself here -- I even belong to their fan club and had a question published in their fan club newsletter. Go ahead and laugh, but I really enjoyed their music. I was in awe of all of the capabilities of those electronic keyboards (I've become a life-long fan of electronic keyboard music largely as a result of this group). I thought Toni Tennille had a good voice that carried a story in a song very well. Of course their greatest hit is still one well known by anyone who remembers the 70s, and that was "Love Will Keep Us Together", a song written by Neil Sedaka. You can be forgiven for thinking the Captain & Tennille were one-hit wonders given that not too many other of their songs hit it quite that big, but in fact they had top ten hits for years, some original and some remakes. They hit is big with their second album with remakes of "Shop Around" and "Muskrat Love", and both of those songs are included on this collection CD too. Their third album had hits like "Come in from the Rain" and "Can't Stop Dancin'", also included here. This CD is actually a repeat of the album they issued at this point in their career. They had several more albums after this Greatest Hits compilation, but none of the songs from those ever captured the top spots (few ever made any version of the top 40) but they still were snapped up by loyal fans (like me). Not enough interest was generated for a second Greatest Hits, so the Captain & Tennille's top-40 career was sort of set in stone with this collection. It is not generally known but they still perform in casino/resort towns, make a few appearances here and there, and also have a more recent release of remakes of other 70s songs. However, to really recapture who Captain & Tennille is, this is the disc to have. As their concluding song says, "We Never Really Say Goodbye." No goodbyes here.

Great Collection!,

It may seem strange to have a greatest hits album after just 3 albums. However, the key tracks are included here. This is an enjoyable easy listening album, but does not to compare with The Carpenters "The Singles: 1969-1973". The pictures are colorful and neat. However, I would recommend the "Ultimate Collection: The Complete Hits" if you only want one CD from Captain & Tennille.
