Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Charlie Louvin, of course, gained fame by singing with his brother Ira, but—though you wouldn’t know it by what’s available—he had as many hits as a solo artist as he did when he was a Louvin Brother. In fact, all 20 tracks on this first-ever CD compilation were Top 40 hits—this one’s so overdue there ought to be a fine levied on the music industry! We’ve added notes and photos, too, to round out this portrait of one of country music’s great singers, harmony or otherwise. Another essential 'Collectors’ Choice Music' country exclusive! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++, November 8, 2005
By Jess "Jess" (Coal Country, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have hundreds of CD's, LP's, and Cassettes filled with the finest country music ever recorded. BUT, this one is worth every red cent you pay!!! There is absolutely no way you can claim to be a country music fan, and not have this album; it will literally blow you away. Anyone who has a passing knowledge of Country Music, knows the Louvin Brothers; but Charlie Louvin also has a solo career that produced absolutely superb songs. This album contains 20 of his hits, and brilliantly displays Charlies voice (and it's evolution) in each number. You can hear the remnant voice of the Louvin Brothers, as well the influences of early George Jones. If I didn't know any better, I'd say Charlie took over where George Jones left off in the ealy 70's, as there are even 3 duets with Jones' original partner, Melba Montgomery. The first number "I Dont Love You Anymore" is absolute Gold, as is "Will You Visit Me on Sundays?". There are a few tongue-in-cheek songs reminiscent of Roger Miller, as "What Are Those Things with Big Black Wings" and "You Finally Said Something Good When You Said Goodbye". Just one listen to this album will cause you turn your head in disgust at the sounds coming from today's "Country Music"....It really does not get any better than this. A+

5.0 out of 5 stars A much-welcome reissue from a true country legend, July 1, 2004
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
At last...! A long-overdue retrospective of solo material by hard-workin' Charlie Louvin, the surviving member of the oh-so-sublime Louvin Brothers duo. After the long-lived brother act went bust in the early '60s (largely due to personal differences between level-headed Charlie and his more reckless sibling), each went their separate way and started a solo career. Sadly, Ira passed away in 1965, killed in an auto wreck just as his first album was to be released. Charlie soldiered on, and had a remarkably successful career, starting off with a #4 hit in 1964, "I Don't Love You Anymore," and 1965's heartwrenching "See The Big Man Cry." Although he was stuck with a lot of repetitive "theme" songs (centered around the "more" vs. "less" twist of his initial hit), he still had a pretty good run in the Top 40, right up through the mid-1970s. This disc captures Charlie's down-to-earth, gosh-heck appeal, and while there are some songs that are missing (and a too-skimpy offering of his early-'70s duets with Melba Montgomery), this is still a mighty fine record, and is bound to be a real treat for fans who've been waiting decades to see many of these songs back in print in any format... Snap this up while you still can.
