5.0 out of 5 stars This cd is Awesome
This one is pretty good but it's missing a couple of songs like Santa Claus and His Old Lady. That should of been on here because that song is pretty hard to find. It was only released as a single and was never put on a album. The only place you can find it is on the various artists christmas compilations. It also overlooks the duo's 2 out of print albums, Sleeping...

CHEECH & CHONG-CHEECH & CHONG'S GREATEST HIT: Don't know what the compilers of this weak excuse for a career overview were smokin' at the time, but somethin' sure smells "funny". Rock n' roll's unofficial counterculture spokesmen of the 70's and their legions of fans deserve higher grade stuff than this. A shortened version of the classic DAVE opens the album and fades out, only to resurface briefly seven cuts later, leaving off the punchline! Big single EARACHE MY EYE is similarly chopped in half, giving you the Alice Bowie rock tune parody, but omitting the even funnier confrontation between "Daddy" and "Junior". There's far too much PEDRO AND THE MAN (over twenty minutes) spread over three tracks---one woulda sufficed, leaving room for missing cult classics like the gluttonous BLOAT ON and BORN IN EAST L.A., the duo's jab at Springsteen and final hit. At least smart-aleck smashes SISTER MARY ELEPHANT and BASKETBALL JONES survive intact, and blooze singer Blind Melon Chitlin' makes a welcome appearance. The same can't be said for quite a few other fondly remembered C & C routines...to quote Chong, "That's a drag, Man!"

RATING: TWO TOKES

This one is pretty good but it's missing a couple of songs like Santa Claus and His Old Lady. That should of been on here because that song is pretty hard to find. It was only released as a single and was never put on a album. The only place you can find it is on the various artists christmas compilations. It also overlooks the duo's 2 out of print albums, Sleeping Beauty and Let's Make a New Dope Deal, which feature great songs and bits like Bloat on, Queer Wars, Framed, and Sleeping Beauty. It also overlooks the Up in Smoke soundtrack, with the exception of Earache my Eye, which was already on the Wedding Album. The album should of had the origanal version of Earache my Eye that was on the Wedding Album instead of the edited version. It's also missing great bits like Acapulco Gold Filters, Don't Bug Me, Up His Nose, and Black Lassie. It's missing songs like the Up in Smoke Theme and Rock Fight. If the album had songs from all their albums and didn't overlook other great bits and songs, it would of been the only C&C disc most C&C fans would need. I would recommend that you get all their albums though since they all contain high quality material not heard here.

...and even though I will only listen to it once or twice, it is just as funny now as it was back in my long haired days.

The technical quality of the CD is very good, MUCH better than my old 8-track or LP of this recording. Sister Mary Elephant shouting a distorted "SHUT-UUUUP!!!! Thank you." never sounded so good.

This is a great CD for bringing back memories of the good old dazed.. uh, I mean days.

"Dave?"

I said "days".

"Dave's not here."

4.0 out of 5 stars Dave's Not Here..., December 30, 2004

We've all had those times where we got blazed with a couple of friends, and then couldn't decide whether we wanted to listen to music, or eat, or sleep or whatever. All you need is this Cheech and Chong CD, some munchies, and your set. This CD is so kick-ass when you're herbalized. After you listen to "Dave" you'll bust a gut laughing before you even know it. "Basketball Jones" is a killer as well, the sexy cheerleader vocals and hilarious lyrics make it a definate C&C favorite. Many times I've caught myself headbanging to "Earache my Eye", that catchy guitar riff is still stuck in my head to this day. But the biggest gut-buster of the whole album is in "Sergeant Stadanko" when Chong says "Well if it's oregano, you can put it in your soup and eat it. You beaner!" I nearly wet myself with laughter. I guess you had to be there... Oh well. Everyone should hear this CD, pure genius!

Donkey smell...

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty much a great collection, May 3, 2009
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Cheech & Chongs variety of humour seems to have passed by. Nowadays we all know the dangers of illicit drug use - or jolly well should. And while I don't condone the use and abuse of drugs, the 'heavy lidded' style of humour here really can produce huge belly laughs. Not to mention the fact that despite all the drug references there is a heck of a lot of decent comedy here that has little or nothing to do with that subject and many of the tracks don't even have any major profanity in them.

Given it has a variety of skits and songs this disc is a good primer for the duos comedy style and helpfully the track listing on the back cover includes the name of the album each track is from so that if you find yourself like a few skits in particular you know where to start when it comes time to expanding your catalogue.

Put it this way - I got this for my 21st birthday and I still dust it off occasionally for a listen all these years later. Just how many years later will remain undisclosed.....

Depends on what you personally consider "classic". If you are looking for one or two, then, yes, this is your album. If you are looking for several, you are better off getting all of their recorded material, since each album they produced only had one, sometimes two hits. Sargent Stadanko is definitely the best cut on this album. The others, while not as great, are good in their own right. But this appeals only to those who like their humor flaked with drug references. Again, to each his own.

BTW, for those looking for the FULL "Earache My Eye", it is on the Dr. Demento 25TH Anniversary Edition two-CD set.

Hope this helps.

Well, you get the idea.

You're right, SS. It's drug humor. It's silly and childish.

It's still funny for all of us old farts. But I know a lot of kids (folks in their 20's) who think that "That 70's Show" is hilarious, and that Tommy Chong is also hilarious.

So, maybe you're just opinionated. Truth in the quality of entertainment ... is... well, it's subjective, dude. There are no facts there. Only opinions.

And frankly, you just don't get it.

My uncle's best friend lent me this album on cassette a couple of months ago, and one day, I just popped it in my dad's tape deck and we just listened and listened and listened. IT WAS SO HILARIOUS! I really need to buy this CD. The best track is Pedro and Man at the Drive-In. It's cool that they brought back the characters from UP IN SMOKE on the CD. Well, smoke ya later.

I bought this CD for my brother for Christmas and he loves it. It brought back lots of great memories from "back in the day". :0) I'm going to get myself a copy, too.
