5.0 out of 5 stars Great set!, July 18, 2001
When you think of modern country duos - particularly at award time - you immediately think of Brooks and Dunn. Of course, that may be at least partly due to the lack of consistent success of any other pairings since the demise of the Judds(watch out for those rising stars Montgomery Gentry and the Warren Brothers though). The absence of competition until recently shouldn't devalue their achievements however. As this generous nineteen-track set illustrates, they have maintained an amazing high standard on their singles going back to their first hit in 1991, "Brand New Man."

The duo title is a bit misleading when summing up the vocal contributions of Brooks & Dunn. Ronnie Dunn sings lead on the majority of their material and it is his underrated tenor which elevates the act to something special. Check out his incredible range on their remake of the B.D. Stevenson hit "My Maria." Dunn also impresses by being equally adept at edgy honky tonk numbers ("Boot Scootin' Boogie," "My Next Broken Heart") and mournful ballads ("That Ain't No Way To Go," "Neon Moon").

The singles which feature Kix Brooks' voice, like "You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone," "Lost And Found" and the new track "Days Of Thunder" are certainly the weakest on the collection. Unlike Dunn, Brooks' voice is rather ordinary, yet it somehow lends itself to stellar harmonising. Where Brooks best complements Dunn is probably on-stage as he romps around entertaining the crowds while a stagnant Dunn merely sings great. About the only place where they shine equally strong in this partnership is in songwriting contributions (together or separately, they had a hand in writing all but two of the enclosed tracks).

The Brand New Man album provided Brooks & Dunn with a debut of extraordinary depth. Subsequent albums have been less consistent, but all have their singles highlights. The Greatest Hits Collection captures all of those highlights except for a couple of singles that were left off from the prior album Borderline (most sorely missed is the #1 heartbreaker "A Man This Lonely)." Even with those omissions, you're getting nineteen hits by one of country's top acts. It's a true gift for the fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their Legacy, Part 1..., June 3, 2004
Legacy? Isn't that a strong word? When you're talking about the duo who wins the Duo of the Year award so often it should be renamed after them--no, it's not. Brooks & Dunn have built a legacy--one they continue to add to. This album, THE GREATEST HITS COLLECTION, features their early hits.

Proof that Ronnie Dunn is one of country's best vocalists is found on their cover of "My Maria." Kix Brooks gets his vocal licks in on the dance-rockers "Mamma Don't Get Dressed Up" and "Rock My World," while Dunn's opus "Boot Scoot Boogie" (quite possibly one of country music's most famous songs) will get you out of your seat and...line dancing? "Little Miss Honky Tonk" is, despite it's name, almost a solid rocker; however, if you want honky tonk, you'll love "We'll Burn that Bridge," "Brand New Man," "Hard Workin Man," "Honky Tonk Truth," "My Next Broken Heart," and "Whiskey Under the Bridge."

It's not all fun and games, though. "She Used to Be Mine" is about one of the saddest songs I've ever heard (yep, it's on par with "He Stopped Lovin Her Today"), and "She's Not the Cheatin Kind" has a harsh undertone. "That Ain't No Way To Go" and "He's Got You" pack quite a punch, while "Days of Thunder" is a reminiscent tune about the good ol' days.

Yeah, Brooks & Dunn are sure-fire number-one hitters. But they're actually GOOD. Their commercial music has always had a current of classic country running through it, and that current is most evident here: their first greatest hits collection, and certainly not the last. THE GREATEST HITS COLLECTION is a must for music fans of all genres.

So here it is: the first part of their legacy. Stay tuned: more great music to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars this record is excellent!!!, August 30, 1998
By A Customer
Ever since Brooks & Dunn started out in 1991 I have been a big fan! This record contains all of their big, big hits!! Instead of putting only the traditional 10-11 songs they gave us 19 that is almost like 2 cd's for the price of one! This reason & their great vocal talent proves why they are the best duo of all times, best artists of all time! I recomend this title to anyone! Words can not express how good this record is! I suggest if you do not own this item buy it fast!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Boot Scootin' Collection of Hits, August 11, 2003
Brooks and Dunn have been one of the most successful duos in country music history, and this excellent cd contains all of their greatest hits. From the upbeat "My Maria" and "Boot Scootin Boogie" to the ballads "That Ain't No Way to Go" and "She's Not The Cheatin' Kind", all B and D fans will find something in the collection that they will like. Brooks and Dunn have proven capable of cranking out both high-energy songs as well as slower ballad types, and each is included in this disc. I highly recommend this top-notch compilation. At over 70 minutes of running time, the hits will keep comin!

5.0 out of 5 stars Probabaly the best cd I own!, July 25, 2003
By A Customer
Country music is my favorite kind of music! I also listen to rock, alternative, rap, oldies...etc. Having said that, this has to be the best cd I own of any genre. You get all of B and D's hits, including some new songs that don't disappoint. It's hard to choose a favorite song because they are all so great! Their talent is incredible! They are great songwriters, muscians and entertainers! Kix and Ronnie maintain a combination of twang and rock that is consistant on these songs. It works for them and has defined them as country artists who remain true to country music! B and D will be around for a long time. Buy this album, even if you are not a country fan and it becomes the only country cd you ever buy! You can't go wrong with Brooks and Dunn!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding country duo of the nineties, February 15, 2003
This compilation was released in 1997 and contains all their big hits up to that point, as well as containing some songs that were new at the time. I became a fan of Brooks and Dunn from their very first album, represented here by five songs, all of them huge hits and four of which went to number one on the country charts. The five songs were Brand new man, Boot scooting boogie, Neon moon, Lost and found and My next broken heart.

Just about any song from that debut album could have been a single, something that was also true of their second album. It is also represented by five songs, these being Hard working man, That ain't no way to go, Rock my world (little country girl), We'll burn that bridge and She used to be mine. Again, they were all huge country hits.

Their third album was generally mellower, with more ballads and fewer up-tempo songs. While it was not what I expected at the time, it was a good move on their part to be a little different. Four tracks from that album are included here, all huge hits. These were You're gonna miss me when I'm gone, She's not the cheating kind, Whiskey under the bridge and Little Miss Honky-tonk.

Just two tracks represent their fourth album (My Maria and Mama don't get dressed up for nothing), but there were more than two hits so the others could be included on a second volume. Three songs specially recorded for the album complete the nineteen songs.

This is a brilliant collection with plenty of hard-rocking country, but with some wonderful slower songs too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to believe !, August 19, 2004
By
Unbelievable that Brooks and Dunn has been around long enough to HAVE a greatest hits album. They keep churning them out with no signs of stopping, and their real fans know why. Even if you have all of B&D's CDs you'll want to add this one to your collection. Here's the best all in one, from "My Maria" to "Boot Scoot Boogie" to "Little Miss HOnky Tonk" to "She's Not the Cheatin' Kind. This CD's only fault is that it wears its fans out from dancing! Roll on, Ronnie and Kix! I can't wait for GH2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, June 27, 2002

TheHighlander (Richfield, PA United States) - See all my reviews
An exceptional Greatest Hits project from Brooks and Dunn. This CD does not have a track that is a 'let down'. As far as Greatest Hits CDs go (which is generally a strong rating) this one has to be near the top. Lots of radio play has been given to most of these songs but they do not lose their appeal. You can still listen to them again and again. This CD puts the 'Brooks and Dunn appeal' into a smaller package. By listening to this you can understand why they are so popular. This CD is real 'new county' and is an outstanding addition to any music collection. Buy this CD and enjoy it, or play it for your friends who will enjoy it.
