Soulful music in many genres,

This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Eurythmics was responsible for some of the most memorable sounds of the 1980s, a series of songs like a string of gemstones. That often-awarded, seldom-merited title The Perfect Pop Song applies to their bittersweet Love Is A Stranger (and Perfect Pop Video for the same song). Lennox & Stuart also made a major contribution in the forgotten band The Tourists.
Every rhythm they took, they made their own: consider the eurythmocalypso of Right By Your Side. The cutting edge of the side mentioned in that song became Thorn In My Side, along with When Tomorrow Comes an example of the fierce beauty attained in their ballads. Their emotional range is unique: compare the chilling menace of You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart to the joyful exuberance of There Must Be An Angel. Lennox & Stewart encapsulate all that is special & valuable in the music of the 80s, a decade that belonged to them as much as it did to Prince, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen. Most of the best are here, with a few regrettable omissions. The first and most glaring is Shame, their 1986 tribute to 60s pop. Also missing are the oriental flavored Belinda and the mournful She's Invisible Now from the obscure first album In the Garden. |
