5.0 out of 5 stars Discover some great musical moments, June 24, 2000

This review is from: Greatest Hits 2 (Audio CD)
I bought this CD for one song, "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and found myself enjoying it from beginning to end. This CD is heavy on the Frankie Valli works of the 1970s, music of my childhood. I find myself thinking each track is musically brilliant. Songs that no one would consider to be classic tracks actually are. "Swearin' to God," "Who Loves You," "My Eyes Adored You," are all the perfect marriage of lyric and music, but also arranged and sang in such a way to make you really feel the song. When he sings "My eyes adored you, though I never laid a hand on you my eyes *adored* you" you really believe him. "Swearin' to God," makes you feel as if you're in a 70s disco, and again, more importantly, the singing, the production, and so on all combine to make you believe the song. I was totally surprised that of all the CD's I've recently purchased, that this is the one I've listened to the most. I heartily recommend this for anyone who wants to either relive their youth, or just wants to listen to some well-crafted records.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frankie ROCKS!, March 10, 2004

This review is from: Greatest Hits 2 (Audio CD)
This was my very first Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons CD, and this is also the CD that made me become a FVFS fan! What can I say...the guy's voice is a charm, and this collection has some of his greatest stuff! If you are a young 60's-70's music lover or someone who is barely starting to have an affinity towards those oldies but goodies, pick up this CD as soon as you can! "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" is a beautiful song of course, and if you've only heard the cheap, horrendous new versions of it, you'd better hear the original because it's truly a classic, and a wonder. "Swearin' To God" "Let's Hang On!" "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and the disco hit "December, 1963" are definately FVFS gems as well. Don't miss out on this super cool CD with songs by the greatest guys in the world: Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Music For All Seasons, October 23, 2000
This review is from: Greatest Hits 2 (Audio CD)
With his glass shattering falsetto, Frankie Valli has one of the most distinctive voices in music. This cd is a nice combination of the band's mid to late 60's efforts along with all of Mr. Valli's big solo hits. The band's "Let's Hang On", "Opus 17" & "Tell It To The Rain" still found fresh and Mr. Valli's solo "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" is one of the ultimate sing-a-long songs in history. Some of the 70's stuff like "My Eyes Adored You" venture into schmaltz, but others like the song that never dies "December 1963" (a number one song in 1976 and a Top 40 hit again in the 90's) and the title song to the movie Grease more than make up for it. This isn't the definitive Four Seasons collection, but a nice place to start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too bad this and its sister release VOLUME ONE are not a double package, October 24, 2009
This review is from: Greatest Hits 2 (Audio CD)
Of the few things questionable about the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons 1991 D.V.D.s GREATEST HITS VOLUME ONE and GREATEST HITS VOLUME TWO, most dubious is the decision not to package them as a single double disc collection, despite this being a compilation by music appreciation-centered Rhino Records. Who would want to buy one but not the other?

Perhaps more knowledgeable fans will correct me, but GREATEST HITS VOLUME ONE and GREATEST HITS VOLUME TWO include every hit song in the career of not only the Four Seasons but also Frankie Valli's solo recordings. Stretching it, you could ask why "Silence is Golden," the flip side of the "Rag Doll" 45 that would be a smash cover version by the Tremeloes, did not make it to this collection. Also, why does the GREATEST HITS mix of "Girl, Come Running" lack the "Come home, baby" refrain in its opening? I had never heard this instrumental opening version. And if you know both mixes of "Dawn," the version here starts with Valli's vocal intro, not the drums-only opening of the other mix.

The package's credits do not mention Patti Austin is the female singer who contributes lead vocals to Frankie Valli's solo hit "Swearin' to God."

If you have a mono switch on your stereo, you may want to use it when playing the 1960s songs on these C.D.s, which are the fake stereo common with reissues of recordings made before the 1970s.

An informative essay by rock and roll journalist Gene Sculatti spreads across GREATEST HITS VOLUME ONE and GREATEST HITS VOLUME TWO. As Rhino cared enough to have Sculatti treat us to this educational overview of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' career, you know you're buying this collection from a company that likes good music as much as you do. Funny enough, Sculatti even alludes to "Silence is Golden" even though the song didn't make the cut!

When you read Gene Sculatti's GREATEST HITS VOLUME ONE and GREATEST HITS VOLUME TWO remarks, please note this is a 1991 collection as he says, "[the song `Grease'] effectively capped the recording career of The 4 Seasons and Frankie Valli. Last, though, is a word we ought to be wary of using in connection with The 4 Seasons."

Gene Sculatti was right, of course. JERSEY BOYS, the Broadway show about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, would open in 2005. As I write this in October 2009, JERSEY BOYS continues on Broadway.

Oh, and don't forget Frankie Valli's role as mobster Rusty Millio in seven episodes of television's THE SOPRANOS between 2004 and 2006.

We bought these CDs the week after seeing "Jersey Boys" performed in Toronto. What a great show and it took my wife and me back to a time when we enjoyed the original Jersey boys. The albums are terrific and anyone who likes the songs of that era as performed by the 4 Seasons, will love these.

Took my wife to see Jersey Boys twice while they were in Charlotte, and though she is younger than I, she instantly became a major fan of FV4S and understands what I have said for years, how music used to be magic to hear and plain FUN to play.... I purchased the volume 1 & 2 of this set.

I also had the earlier 2 tape cassette FV4S set (volume 1 & 2) years ago as well as double albumn set released in 70's of these songs (both those had Silence is Golden and a couple other songs not in this cd set), but hearing them on these cd's today is even so much better just like being in a live concert.

My younegst son cannot believe the "vibe" of the songs and enjoys listening to these regularly too saying "Dad, why doesn't music today sound like this music?".... That sums it up for everyone.
