5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Superb Harpsichord Sampler
I can't imagine a better sampler of harpsichord 'hits' played by one of the great stereo-era masters. A full complement of emotions is displayed here, from the most delicate and sparing texture to the most rip-roaring martial roar. If you're wondering what the harpsichord is about, or if you're already a fan and want a great sampler to play for your own delight and...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Recording
This is a good recording for those who wish to acquaint themselves with this incredible 500-year-old instrument. This cd contains some of the most well-known keyboard tunes of the baroque era, and gives a good sample of the capabilities of the harpsichord. Mr. Kipnis does have a tendency toward playing pieces a bit too quickly in my opinion, however, his improvisations...

This cd contains some of the most well-known keyboard tunes of the baroque era, and gives a good sample of the capabilities of the harpsichord. Mr. Kipnis does have a tendency toward playing pieces a bit too quickly in my opinion, however, his improvisations are quite good (especially on Handel's "Sarabande").

I have always loved the sound of the Harpsichord and for many years hearing poorly recorded or played Harpsichord this treasure is a must have. From the fine compositions to the good sound quality this CD is definately a keeper.
Plenty of music for a moderate price as well.

As with several other of Kipnis' albums, these could serve as either an eye opener for those uninitiated to the potential of the late 20th century harpsichord in the hands of these virtuoso musicians. And an introduction of the incredibly rich, varied (and almost totally neglected) music of the 18th Century. Igor Kipnis was so much more than a master of the keyboard, he helped introduce three generations to what the Baroque was all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting to Know the Harpsichord's Repertoire, April 25, 2010
This review is from: Greatest Hits: Harpsichord (Audio CD)
I can't think of a better introduction to the harpsichord's vast repertoire than this collection! It is well named "Greatest Hits of the Harpsichord." Igor Kipnis has put together a wonderful selection of music - there really is something here for everyone. Although I'm not a great fan of Mr. Kipnis' playing - I think he plays a little too heavily at times and tends to take some pieces too fast - but overall this is still a fine collection and well-played. I definitely recommend this!

It is a great compilation of many wonderful songs. I can not say I am a big fan of the performer's style however, as he tends to play an excessive number trils and notes where they are not necessary.

This is a fabulous collection of harpsichord pieces. They include English, French, German, and Italian pieces. Great variety. Scholarly interpretations are correct, and interpretation/speed/ornamentation are perfect. This is one you must have for your collection, especially if you are just starting to collect harpsichord music. The artists are not named in the Amazon info here, but they are Igor Kipnis (my favorite), Anthony Newman, and Arnold Dolmetsch (one of the pioneer early music musicologists). And, my gosh! Look at the price!!!! mb

5.0 out of 5 stars keeno, January 7, 2001
This review is from: Greatest Hits: Harpsichord (Audio CD)
This is a fun cd. BYRD, BULL, BACH ETC come through great Scarlatti bits sound like a flock of unhappy cows running of a field of burnt popcorn but those bits generally do unless played on the African Kalimba [or thumb piano] in Africa where I need not hear them.

This is a well engineered CD. Many featuring the harpsichord demand a level of equipment beyond that of any regular person with bills, which means this disk sounds just fine on a boom box. Everybody in the family will like some part of this disk `cept for the 13 year old whose lost to punk rock or hip hop.
