2.0 out of 5 stars Heart - Greatest Hits 1985-1995
Nowhere near as good, in MY opinion, as "Hearts Essential". It won't get as much play time as HEARTS ESSENTIAL.

Without a doubt, Heart is my favorite female group of all time and this album has all of my favorite Heart songs. Ironically, just 3 or 4 months before this cd came out, I put in an order at a music store for an import cd called These Dreams - Heart's Greatest Hits that never came in. Just a couple of months after I cancelled my order from the music store, I looked at Amazon.com and found out that this album was coming out in late June.

I bought this cd as soon as it came out and it's worth every penny. It has all my favorites such as "These Dreams" and "Alone." Even the songs that I wasn't familiar with such as "Back To Avalon" and "I Didn't Want To Need You" are great. If you're a fan of Heart's music after they made their major comeback in the mid 80's, this album is for you. Even if you don't know any of Heart's songs, I still recommend getting it to add to your collection. Ann & Nancy Wilson have two of the best singing voices ever combined with some good musicians that make this album one of the best 'greatest hits' albums of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Complete Compilation of Hits, December 6, 2000
By
Mike S (Front Royal,Virginia United States) - See all my reviews
I bought this CD recently, and was not disappointed. I've been a fan of Heart since their first album in 1976. This CD thoroughly covers all their hits from the Capitol Records days from 85 through 95. All the melodic rockers as well as their ballads are on this album. The only small hit missing is "Want You So Bad" from the "Bad Animals" album. I was very pleased to see "There's The Girl" and "If Looks Could Kill" on this CD,since these 2 songs get very little airplay on the radio anymore. This is a very good buy, seeing there are 18 songs on a single CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the hits plus more...., July 14, 2001
When I first got this cd a couple months ago I doubted that I would like it that much but now I love it. This collection of hits from 1985-1995 starts out with "What About Love" which made it to #10. It is a well written song about telling someone what you are really feeling about them. "If Looks Could Kill" lets Heart show that they can get up in your face as well as they can sing about love, which made it to #54. "Never" is another one of those up in your face songs from the band that hit #4. The #1 hit "These Dreams" is one of the mellow, laid back songs on this album and is very well written. "Nothin' At All" is one of the first songs of Hearts that I heard and it is also one of my favorites that made it to #10. Another #1 hit from the group "Alone" is another one of the stand out tracks on this compilation. "Who Will You Run To" (#7) shows off Ann Wilson's vocal abilities. "There's The Girl" (#10) is a good song with great vocals and says that not all girls are what they seem to be. "Surrender To Me" which was a track with Ann Wilson and Robin Zander made it to #6 is a corny song if you ask me. "All I Wanna Do...." (#2) caused a little controversy when it first it was also originally written for Don Henley. "I Didn't Want To Need You" (#23) is a good song about not needing someone after it was a little too late. "Tall,Dark,Handsome Stranger" is a good rock track that is meant to be loud when played if not it is boring. "Stranded" (#13) is a good song about a break up and how everything isn't like a fairy tale. "You're The Voice" was another song that stirred up some controversy love and not war theme and "Back To Avalon" is a acoustic and contrasts some of their other works. "Black on Black II" is an awesome song that reminds me of "Barracuda" with it's guitar riffs. "Will You Be There" lets both of the sisters share mic in this song which made it to #30. "The Road Home" is a live track on the album. If you like Heart and want the hits without buying a mess load of cds this is for you..

5.0 out of 5 stars delicious pop metal, August 21, 2001
By
i was 14 when Heart released back in 1985 their self-titled album worldwide. All of a sudden i knew they were bringing out in me the rocker side as much as Madonna did with pop and Whitney Houston did with R'n'B. I loved everything about the Wilson sisters: their looks - says who metal bands are formed of bad big smelly guys only??? - and their attitude towards music. I remember MTV palying heavily NEVER and THESE DREAMS, pumping on NEVER and raising controversy with ALL I WANNA DO IS MAKE LOVE TO YOU. Well, this collection proves to be more than that, since not only all of the singles issued by EMI are included here, you do have also some nuggets such as SURRENDER TO ME (which hit the top 10 US back in 1989) from the TEQUILA SUNRISE soundtrack - a powerful duet by Ann and Cheap Trick's Robin Zander -, the album cut TALL, DARK, HANDSOME STRANGER (that i would have personally left out in favour of the commercially available singles I WANT YOU SO BAD and THE WOMAN IN ME), the hard-to-find radio version of YOU'RE THE VOICE (previously available only in a live version on the ROCK THE HOUSE LIVE! album) and to bring everything to full circle, an awesome acoustic version of THE ROAD HOME. Heart knows how to rock you off, Ann and Nancy are two modern mermaids that take you by the hand and bring you to their underwater world, where you can be gently lulled by the sweetest of ballads (STRANDED) or swept by the hardest-driven guitar riff (BLACK ON BLACK II)... I'm 30 now, halfa life more, but all those songs are still masterpieces to me. If you're a late Heart fan as i am you'll love this collection, if you've never heard about them - which i doubt, just go ask yr older brother or younger uncle - this is a good buy to get you started loving their stuff...it's a must buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars How come they're never on VH1?, May 22, 2002
By
kh9480 (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
I first heard of Ann and Nancy Wilson and their band, Heart, when my dad played their cd for me in the car one day. What great music talent!! I can't believe that I had never heard of them before...how come I never hear anything about them on VH1? Seriously...every song on this album is, in my opinion, a great pop/rock song and the Wilson sisters definitely have the musical talent to make this such a memorable album. Ann Wilson has one of the best rock voices I have ever heard. It is so powerful and is of such incredible range. When you listen to such songs as "Black on Black" (love that one!) and "Who will you run to?", you realize that this lady knows how to hit a high note rock-n-roll style. You go girl! In addition, Nancy has great talent on the guitar and I was also extremely impressed to find out she could sing lead vocal, too (and do a great job!). I love the music coming from these two sisters and I only wish that I could still see them perform this material live. They're awesome and I demand to know why they're not on VH1's 100 greatest women of rock-n-roll countdown. I highly recommend this cd!

4.0 out of 5 stars Some rockers, and a few power ballads, March 1, 2001
By
eveoflove (North York, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
Made in CAN in 2000, Serial# 72435-26803-2-0, Playing Time 72:58

This is the second consecutive "greatest hits" package to be released by Capitol (the 1st in 1997 was called "These Dreams"), but this time it focuses on the 1985-1995 era only.

The problem is, 10 out of these 18 tracks were on its predecessor, so I feel a bit cheated. On the other hand, this time we get the tracks in chronological order, which I believe is the best way to follow the changes in sound the band went through.

Here's a quick run-down of the sources for the material, all included in full-length form:

Tracks 1 to 5 from "Heart", tracks 6 to 8 from "Bad Animals", track 9 is from the soundtrack to "Tequila Sunrise" (Richard Marx recorded his own song on his 1997 "Flesh And Bone" album); tracks 10 to 13 from "Brigade"; track 14 from a promo-only single (studio version, but available live on "Rock The House"; also a HUGE hit in the mid-80's by John Farnham, on his "Whispering Jack" album); tracks 15 to 17 from "Desire Walks On"; track 18 is the uncredited and last track on "The Road Home".

Most of the material on this disc is "electric" and shows the powerful side of Heart. The trouble with "greatest hits" or "best of" albums is that you're favorite might not be on it. If you're fairly new to the band, especially from that era, this CD puts together many of their most popular songs from these albums. And it sounds a lot more cohesive than the "These Dreams" CD.

Highly recommended to the HEART newbie, but also recommended for the fan because I don't think you'll skip any of the tracks on this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart is one of my all time favorite bands, February 11, 2001
By
Heart was my very first concert I saw back in the early '90s. Ann and Nancy Wilso so rocked my world when I was in high school. I liked their early material but my most favorite music they did was in the '80s through the early '90s. Finally there is a greatest hits of their more popular material that does this band justice. Their last greatest hits cd was a complete disappointment and left out a lot of great songs off of "Desire Walks On" and "Brigade".

My one sole problem with this greatest hits is that "Secret" is nowhere to be found on this cd. I love that song, and I know that it was the last single released off "Brigade". Other than that, I was quite pleased to hear a studio version of "You're the Voice" as well as "Black on Black II" and "Back to Avalon". I thought that Ann's Duet with Robin Zander of Cheap Trick was rather cheesy but it was still good nevertheless. This cd is excellent for any casual Heart fan or diehard fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits Part 2, July 5, 2000
By A Customer
Not that we haven't had a lot of this before, but I think that this is the most superior hits collection yet. A lot of songs I hadn't heard in years and had forgetten how good they were. The remastering is excellent as the tracks sound as if they were just recorded yesterday. I combined this album with the recently released "Greatest Hits" in one of those 2-CD jewel cases and made a double album out them. They're great together or as stand alone albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars aNOTHER GREATEST HITS FROM MUSIC'S GREATEST SISTERS, June 30, 2000
This cd is a good recap of their 1985-1995 (hence the title...) years, but, I would have loved to see Ann's solo semi-hit BEST MAN IN THE WORLD from 1986, SECRET from 1990, the remix of I WANT YOU SO BAD from 1987, and the single version of THESE DREAMS from 1985 all included. Overall though the tracks are great.

4.0 out of 5 stars '80s Heart..., March 9, 2009
I love Heart.
I have loved Heart since Magic Man hit the Radio and I saw then on that first headline tour. This is not that Heart, it is '80s Heart, which was still my favorite from the era at the time, but for me this is my least favorite incarnation.

Recently however, I have repurchased my favorite era of studio albums and got the CDs again of everything up to and including "PassionWorks" and also the "LoveMonger era", I have debated geting the '80's CDs but they lack the emotional hold on me as the other albums. I compromised by geting this CD, which does have the singles that defined their "Singles" & MTV era. IT is a very good set of "Power Ballads", one old school style rock song "Black on Black II" as well as "Back to Avalon" and "The Road Home" from the accoustic era.

So here's the deal,
This is a great CD for those who are '80s Heart fans, and those like me who want something to represent that era of their work but aren't crazy enough about it to go replace their lost albums.
