Editorial Reviews

Hollywood, California - April 17, 2006 - The central images from a Huey Lewis and the News music video are indelible -- singing heads sprouted from the sand, Lewis' head held in a sink of ice water, and Lewis' trademark baby blues. Capitol / EMI Music Catalog Marketing is proud to announce the May 23 release of Huey Lewis And The News: Greatest Hits and a limited edition CD/DVD package, Greatest Hits & Videos. The 21-track CD includes 20 Top 20 hits, among them 17 Top 10s and six #1 singles spanning the Grammy-winning band's career, from their first Top 10 single, 1982's "Do You Believe In Love" to 2000's #1 smash duet "Cruisin'." Greatest Hits & Videos pairs the CD with a DVD collecting nine of Huey Lewis and the News' biggest and best-remembered music video moments and a concert performance clip from 1982. All ten video cuts make their DVD debut, and both packages contain liner notes essays penned by Huey Lewis, comedian/TV host Jimmy Kimmel and writer Paul Liberatore. This summer, Huey Lewis and the News will co-headline a national Live Nation-presented concert tour with Chicago, with dates scheduled for more than 30 cities across the U.S.

Here is the good about the album: The songs are great. The songs selected are very good it has something from every album but the Plan B album. The remastering is good too. I have all the albums and loved them as a kid growing as I do now in my 30's. It's great to have them all together. Also I will say kudos for including Back in Time from the B2theF soundtrack. The Crusin' song is on there too (edited).

Here is the bad:

The fact that they crammed all 21 of them onto 1 cd stinks. All the solos and great instrumental parts of the songs have been taken out. They should have done 2 discs in order to include the complete songs. I still have the time flies GH from '96. It only has 12 songs as I recall but they are unedited and the complete versions of the songs with solos. So I'll hang onto that. I realize they cd is 80 mins with 21 songs this is great but with the solos gone it's not a great as it could have been.

There are often times where I absolutely wonder why so many acts today like Britney Spears, Usher and Beyonce', seem to be more about the image over the music. It is definitely a sad case. That is why I would rather prefer listening to guilty pleasures of the past, because the music was a bit more organic back in the 80's. One of my favorites of course that still sticks in my head is Huey Lewis & The News. Since their 80's days, they have been gone but definitely not forgotten within their music and the appeal of a great song. They have also had a mostly good greatest hits record a decade ago with Time Flies in 1996, but that collection could've had more to offer. Now another record might take its place as a really better greatest hits record.

Huey Lewis & The News 2006 Greatest Hits record is a bit more than what the previously hits had to offer. The compilation does really showcase what made this 80's group had definitely delivered, great music and good appeal with pop, soul & R&B. The compilation is restored and remastered very well and includes a lot of the groups biggest 80's hits like I Want A New Drug, Heart And Soul, If This Is It, the #1 Back To The Future Track The Power Of Love, the bluesy Workin' For A Livin'. The album also adds on very well by including tracks surprisingly overlooked from the last greatest hits record like the upbeat Hip To Be Square, Jacob's Ladder and Perfect World. The album also delivers Huey's duet with Gwenyth Paltrow on the Smokey Robinson cover of Crusin'. Although the album overlooks a few minor tracks like Bad Is Bad, the collection is purely definitive.

Following in the steps of recent `Greatest Hits' offerings by Pat Benatar (2005), J. Geils Band (2006) and Poison (2006), Capitol Records finally issues a more up-to-date hits collection from the guys from San Francisco. After the disappointing 1996 `Best Of' issue many fans were hoping for a more complete single disc retrospective. Finally, it's here!

While this release has it's flaws it is simply the best single disc Huey Lewis & The News offering on the market today. Nearly every track has received a stunning remastering treatment by Robert Vosgien at Capitol Mastering Studios, Hollywood. This guy has done a brilliant job with these recordings! Never have these songs sounded so clear and full! I'm so excited to be able to listen to these songs for the first time in this new upgraded sound. Check out "Hip To Be Square"! This song has never had so much kick! The remastering alone makes this compilation worth owning! It sounds much better than the 1996 hits offering.

On a side note, the liner notes state that only tracks 1-13, 16, 17, & 19-21 were remastered. That means tracks 14 ("It's Alright"), 15 ("Cruisin'"), and 18 ("But It's Alright") were not remastered by Robert. This is fine, considering the "Cruisin'" track is from 2000, not really in need of a remaster. "It's Alright" from 1993 is an a cappella track, so any audio upgrades are probably hard to hear. Nonetheless, "But It's Alright" from 1994 has been upgraded as well. The sound is an obvious improvement over the '94 release.

This much needed update of 1996's TIME FLIES... kicks off with "The Heart of Rock & Roll," one of five chart hits from their multi-platinum album SPORTS. [Curiously, "Walking on a Thin Line" didn't get included.] During the Eighties, Huey Lewis & The News were all over the radio and MTV. Their two most successful albums, SPORTS and FORE!, both hit No. 1 and nearly half of their hits on this collection are from those two albums.

How does GREATEST HITS differ from TIME FLIES...? For starters it drops the four tracks that were recorded specifically for TIME FLIES.... Moreover, they add the singles "Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do" (from PICTURE THIS), "Hip To Be Square," "Jacob's Ladder" and "I Know What I Like," (all from FORE!), "Perfect World" and "Small World" (both from SMALL WORLD) and "Couple Days Off" (from HARD AT PLAY) along with the duet with Gwyneth Paltrow, "Cruisin'," from the movie "Duets." [The only missing hit--other than "Walking on a Thin Line--is 1991's "It Hit Me Like a Hammer," their final Top 40 hit.] All told, this is a very satisfying and enjoyable collection of hits. The only thing that would have made it better was if it was two discs.

A couple of years ago, Blender magazine placed "The Heart of Rock & Roll" No. 6 on the list of "50 Worst Songs Ever." Methinks the editors at Blender had their collective heads up their $#%@. While Huey Lewis & The News were never critis' darlings, they were popular for a reason--their music was good. Period. [Hardcore fans will want the CD/DVD collection which includes nine videos.] (Running Time - 79:19) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Hi... I just found your comment.

I agree!!!

I have an old Laser Disc with some early ones... but it would be great to have a complete set... with the extended versions of the ones like Stuck With You.
