5.0 out of 5 stars JACKIE WILSON A MUSIC TREND SETTER
It's no secret Elvis copied Jackies signature slick black hair, tight Italian pants and sharp shirts when he shed his rockabilly look. He even sampled Jackies hand gestures. One thing he couldn't touch was that voice. Smooth as satin, sexy as silk lingerie. And those smoothly executed splits in those tight pants? PLEASE. This music sends me back. If you want...

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor value
This recording has only 16 tracks. The other reviewers didn't do their research and opt to buy the 24 track recording "The Very Best of Jackie Wilson" on Ace records. Get that recording, not this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Original Soul Tenor, September 30, 2004

I am a life-long soul musicologist/singer and alongside the immortal Sam Cooke, I have always been a great fan of Jackie Wilson. This CD offers all of his hits and most moving renditions of his most enduring recordings. I've read many of the reviews about this and other Jackie Wilson compilations and it strikes me as odd that no one has made any mention of the fact that, aside from being a spectacular performer and vocalist, Jackie was perhaps the only soul singer of his time...or any time who had the vocal compass of a classically trained tenor. Had his career not been rooted in the racially repressed 50's & 60's, he may well have enjoyed the success of a Mario Lanza. Granted, Jackie's voice was untrained but with some work he could well have enjoyed success in both the Soul and Classical field, a harbinger of today's "Popera" genre, again not unlike the great Mario Lanza. Jackie Wilson's remains one of the greatest tenor voices ever heard and he will forever be the original Soul Tenor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Jackie Wilson, October 14, 2003
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This is a great CD for anyone who is looking to get into Jackie Wilson, who has one of the best Soul/R & B voices of all time. This CD his major hits (Lonely Teardrops, That's Why (I Love You So), Higher and Higher, etc.) and also has enough lesser known songs to help you appreciate Wilson's talents without having to be a diehard fan to enjoy it all. His version of Danny Boy is unique and lets the listener know that his voice can make even the most traditional of songs seem like new.

I would definitely recommend this to those who are looking to further explore Soul/R & B singers or those who just want to get into Jackie Wilson beyond the 3 or 4 major hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's Only One - Jackie Wilson!, December 24, 2002

When I was a little girl, my Dad took me, my sister and my cousins to see Jackie Wilson at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. It was 1965 or so. I was in a complete daze. My Dad told me I wandered up on the stage and was glazed and starry eyed! I ordered the CDs for my Mom for Xmas! When we listened to them, it was like I was that little girl again. Just close my eyes and I'm there again next to the greatest crooner of all time! The world lost a great Impresario! Thank God his voice is preserved for eternity! Here's to you, Jackie!!!

I always put people right when they go on about Michael Jackson. I tell them about Jackie Wilson and how Jackie is so far greater in all areas it's not even funny. They never believe me until I show them Jackie on DVD or CD. THEN, they believe me! This is another wonderful compilation on the great man and another excellent introduction - but remember - it is only an introduction, GO BUY SOME MORE! More excellent liner notes and great CD production. A word to Brunswick - release the unreleased and alternate takes by Jackie please!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jackie Wilson - They Didn't Call Him Mr. Excitement for Nothing!, October 26, 2005
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Jackie Wilson was referred to as "Mr. Excitement," in his heyday. No one could really compare with his soulful style, incredible vocals and ground-breaking moves which many have copied, but failed to execute as smoothly as he did.

This collection of his greatest hits is fun from the moment you put it on. I love Lonely Teardrops, Reet Petite, That's Why I Love You So for the electricity they generate and the soaring vocals.

Jackie also shows off his classical vocal training on Night and Danny Boy which are formidable and memorable.

The collection closes out with some of his last hits such as "Higher and Higher," which has been covered by just about everyone, but no one even comes close to capturing the same excitement and energy that Jackie creates on this track.

Tragically, Jackie's incredible career was cut short, but we can all remember him and his music with this great collection...It does not disappoint and shows that Jackie Wilson was one of the original innovator of Soul and paved the way for James Brown, Marvyn Gaye, Al Green and all the rest!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr Excitement, January 19, 2000

They didn't call Jackie Wilson "Mr Excitemnent" for nothing. Even though some of these songs are over 40 years old, I still get chills listening to them. This cd contains Jackie's earliest hits such as "Reet Petite" and his later hits such as "I Get The Sweetest Feeling" and "Higher and Higher". It also contains my personal favorite "Oh Danny Boy". I once saw Jackie in person. He had the women screaming and fainting. Listening to this cd brings back all those great memories. Ifyou're a Jackie Wilson fan like I am, I highly recommend this cd. It's Jackie at his best
