The First Editon: Not Forgotten,
By "irenerenee" (Pennsylvania USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
As a fan who followed the group from their first album, at ten years old, I was surprised that some great songs that developed the group early on were not included such as; "If Wishes Were Horses", "I Found A Reason", and one of the especially notable songs by Thelma Comacho "I Get A Funny Feeling". These early songs were a catalyst in the group's initial success with appearances on such shows as The Smothers Brothers, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. The Ed Sullivan Show and American Bandstand. With each member's unique talent, this could have definitely been a 2 CD package. As a fan I wanted more of the memories of the original members. But for those that recall the most radio heavy aired tunes, they are included right here. I also appreciated Todd Everett's seven page history of the group's evolution and update of each band member.

A timeless album,
By Hiram Gomez Pardo (Valencia, Venezuela) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

This album contains the cream of the cream about Kenny Rogers , his first steps just in the rise of his unbeatable career .
Something's burning , Ruby don't take your love to town or Ruben James are among the most representative and emblematic of this ensemble with clear country influences , but his compositions are made with broad gusto , rhytms and excellent arrangements . This album still remains as a classic in the glorious sixtioes decade . If you are a hard fan of the Kenny Rogers from 1977 to 2004 , please turn around the clock , go back to his origins and you will be rewarded with this melodic voice.

Why omit some of their BEST in a "BEST OF"?,
By Doug Kresse (Yorba Linda, , CA USA) - See all my reviews

Is it lunacy or pettiness that motivates a label to fail to release one of the BEST songs of The First Edition? The group evolved into a backing band for Kenny. So what? It's a shame that many people will never hear "I get a funny feeling." A classic. It stands the test of time. And it ought to be in every First Edition "best of"--it was one of their best.

A Classic Album,
By Ben (NYC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This album features music recorded between the years of 1967 and 1974. It is a fine collection of great songs. I do agree though with some of the other comments that this group made a heck of a lot of classic oldies and it would be great to see more of them on compact disc. As it happens most of the groups material has at some time or other been on CD, but not usually in the origanal album format, but as part of many complations.
Great classics that didn't make this one include "It's A Crazy Afternoon", "Then I Miss You", "Mamas Waiting" (Rogers later did this as a solo act - i think that version is even better), "Goodtime Liberator", "Mission Of San Nohero", "Calico Silver", "Hurry Up Love", etc, etc. Notheless this CD is great and features all eight of the bands top 40 singles such as "Reuben James", "Heed The Call" and their world beating chart-topper "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town".

Early Kenny Rogers,
A Kid's Review

A very rare but great collection from the early releases of the group The First Edition. Reprise records did a lot of experimental stuff back then and these songs are no different. Vague anti-war messages and civil rights issues are conveyed in an intelligent way. Good stuff!

Great Golden Oldies,
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Kenny Rogers is the best in country music with a long run of hit records and cd's. This is some of his best music, recorded with the first edition in the 1960's, he would later become an even bigger star without them in the 1970's, but that doesn't mean this music is anything to overlook, as great as his solo material is.
From the electric "Just Dropped In" to the easy on the ear ballad "Someone Who Cares" to the bubble gum 60's pop of "Good Time Liberator", through the world-wide number one hit "Ruby", there is something here for every taste. This is the original hit's album. Everyone is a winner. In the 1960's and 1970's more than 20 million copies of the first editions records were sold, today that total is closer to 80 million. This is a fine collection of country, pop, easy listening and hard rockers. A must for any music fan.

Million-Selling Classic from the country music king, Kenny Rogers.,
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
"Kenny Rogers & The First Editions Greatest Hit's", has now topped millions of sales in the United States, earning an RIAA Platinum award. Of course, Kenny Rogers And The First Edition have been no strangers to fame, since they achieved a string of top hit's in the 60's and 70's that are collected here.
"Ruby" was one of the first singles I ever got and I'm delighted to now hear it on this breasted CD without tape hiss or clicks and pops. I also like "Something's Burning" (very erotic lyrics), "Good Time", "Tell It All Brother" and "Reuben James". 5 Star rating!

Kenny Rogers & 1st Edition ~ "HALF of Their Greatest Hits",

ABSOLUTELY, NOT ONE OF ANY OF THE CURRENT 'GREATEST HITS' OR 'ANTHOLOGY' REISSUES LISTED AS EITHER 'KENNY ROGERS & THE FIRST EDITION' OR 'KENNY ROGERS' OFFERS A FULL [OR EVEN 'HALF' FULL] SELECTION OF THIS GROUPS EARLY, PRIME MATERIAL! I HAVE EMAILED THE OFFICIAL KENNY ROGERS WEBSITE IN REGARDS TO OFFERING A MORE COMPLETE 'FIRST EDITION' RETROSPECTIVE AND THEY JUST KINDLY [IN A COUNTRY-KINDA-WAY] BLEW ME OFF, STATING THEY SHOWED NO INTEREST ... WHATSOEVER ... IN THAT MATERIAL! GRANTED THE REMAINING UNRELEASED [IGNORED] RECORDINGS WERE NOT "MAJOR" HITS FOR THE GROUP, BUT IN RETROSPECT THEY WERE INDEED IMPORTANT SINGLE RELEASES ... AND A FEW OF THEM WERE ACTUALLY VERY, VERY GOOD SONGS! EXAMPLES: "TULSA TURNAROUND", "CAMPTOWN LADIES", "CALICO SILVER", "CHARLIE FER DE LANCE", "MAMMA'S WAITING" ... TO NAME THE MORE IMPORTANT SONGS! ALSO, WHY HAS THERE NEVER BEEN A CD RE-ISSUE OF THEIR CLASSIC "BALLAD OF CALICO" DOUBLE-ALBUM??!! THIS ALBUM WAS A VERY IMPORTANT RECORDING!! IT WAS ONE OF THE VERY FIRST 'CONCEPT' ALBUMS EVER RECORDED, AND IT CONTAINS A BOUNTY OF BEAUTIFUL WESTERN/COUNTRY SONGS - ALL OF WHICH WERE WRITTEN BY THE LEGENDARY "MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHEY". TRULY A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS WHEN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY NOT ONLY IGNORES IT IMPORTANT MOMENTS, BUT BLOWS-OFF ITS FANS!
