Motley Crue is one of my favourite bands of all time and I love their music. They released some great albums and influenced many other artists during and since their heyday in the 1980s. Motley were there, loud and in your face and I think that's what their fans loved so much about them. There have been 9 studio albums, 3 previous Motley Greatest hits (Decade of Decadence, Greatest Hits, The Millenium Collection if you count it and Red,White and Crue), 2 boxed sets and 2 live albums since they started on the sunset strip in 1980. Now in late 2009 comes a new compilation of Motley Crue songs, let's look at it.

I'm satisfied with the representation of Shout At The Devil, Dr. Feelgood and all the others but I can't help but think that their first album Too Fast For Love deserved at least another song on this greatest hits. They put the title track here but why not Live Wire or Piece of Your Action, there are plenty of excellent songs on Motley' first album. There are no songs from their Self-Titled album from 1994 with singer John Corabi who replaced Vince Neil but that was to be expected, but it would have been nice to get something from 2000's New Tatoo at least. This greatest hits has 1 songs from Too Fast, 3 from Shout, 2 from Theatre and Girls, 5 from Dr.Feelgood, Primal Scream from the early 90s Decade of Decadence greatest hits, 1 song from Generation Swine, 2 from the 2004 Red, White and Crue compilation, 2 from their latest album Saints of Los Angeles if you count the remix of The Animal In Me (which isn't that different from the original by the way).

That aside, the songs selected were pretty good. Personally I would have taken out the two songs from Red, White and Crue and replaced them but they picked the very best. Ok, now I just have to say this: except the songs from Saints THIS IS ALL ON RED, WHITE AND CRUE ALREADY! I understand that record companies make money from those compilations and they are made because there are new fans each year but it would be nice if they varied from one another. To me R W & C was the ultimate compilation being two disc, spawning their whole career and including a few extras for the hardcore fans, I've rarely seen better. This one is not bad but it lacks diversity from other soundtracks and misses a few things. Seeing how perfect R W & C was and what this one is, the fact that it is yet ANOTHER compilation for Motley and that I'm a hardcore fan I can't give it more than two stars.

My advice would be to get Red, White and Crue you get much more for your money if not this one while lacking is still worth getting if you're a new fan of the band.

I got this for 9.99 at best buy and it came with a bonus dvd with footage from cruefest 2 tour which is a cool behind the scenes special. This cd is great if you are just getting into them or long time fans like me that have all their cds, but like to see an updated hits album for a value price.

2.0 out of 5 stars Call the Guiness Book!, November 24, 2009
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Motley now has the record for "fastest to have more greatest hits and live albums than they have studio albums", previously held by Aerosmith. Most of the songs are from their first 5 albums, which are all they ever did that really count. At this rate they will capture the title "most greatest hits albums from fewest studio albums" currently held by Quiet Riot. Despite reguritating the same songs over and over, two of them are still broke.

2.0 out of 5 stars Again? Really?, November 18, 2009
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Motley Crue is and has been my favorite band for as long as I care to remember. That said, I am not buying this CD. I'm tired of buying the same damn songs over and over. Sure, they've added a couple of songs that haven't been on previous Greatest Hits albums, but I own those on the original releases. One unreleased song is not enough incentive. I would have appreciated it if a long time ago, they had decided to do their Greatest Hits albums in volumes without having repeats of songs. I love you Nikki, but enough is enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars In case you missed it the first few times..., November 12, 2010
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I have to say I'm wondering why on Earth we're getting yet another greatest hits collection from Motley Crue. Wasn't 2003's Motley Crue - Greatest Hits a pretty thorough collection of Crue singles? If not, surely 2005's 2-disc Red, White, & Crue hit all the highlights (and then some). For that matter, doesn't the old 1992 set Decade of Decadence '81-'91 adequately cover all of the (important/relevant) Crue hits (that dreadful Sex Pistols cover aside)? Sorry, but this 2009 Greatest Hits collection smells of fulfilling a record company obligation. They even reused the cover artwork and liner notes from the 2003 collection.

Whatever the reason, I can't argue that between a successful new album, bestselling book, and their own traveling rock festival, Motley Crue is enjoying a surge in popularity of late. Perhaps that's reason enough for another trip through the band's past. Here's what this collection has to offer:

From 1982's Too Fast For Love, only the title track is included. Seriously? No "Live Wire" or "Piece of Your Action?" That's almost grounds for dismissal right off the bat.

They hit all the highlights of 1983's Shout at the Devil by including "Looks That Kill," "Too Young To Fall In Love" and the anthemic title track.

"Home Sweet Home" and the band's cover of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boys Room" were the only inclusions from 1985's Theatre of Pain, and even that may be one too many. That was not Motley Crue's finest hour.

1987's Girls Girls Girls is represented by "Wild Side" and the title track. I can't argue the logic of those choices, as both were pretty big hits. "You're All I Need" would have worked as well, and "Dancin' On Glass" deserved a spot for being a totally killer song, even if it wasn't a hit.

It should come as no surprise that 1989's Dr. Feelgood is the most heavily represented album on this collection. It was a massive hit, even by Crue standards, and "Dr. Feelgood," "Kickstart My Heart," "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)," "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)" and "Without You" all deserve inclusion here.

Here's where it gets tricky. They have to cover the band's output since Dr. Feelgood, but Motley Crue hasn't really had a bona-fide hit since that album's heyday. Here are the best of the rest:

"Primal Scream," a studio track recorded for the Decade of Decadence collection. This one actually got some decent airtime back in the day.

"Sick Love Song" and "If I Die Tomorrow" are two forgettable studio tracks recorded for the Red, White and Crue anthology. They don't do much more than remind us that there was already a decent Motley Crue anthology on store shelves.

1997's Generation Swine actually gets a nod with the song "Afraid." Was this really a hit? They could have tossed John Corabi a bone and thrown in "Hooligan's Holiday" from the self-titled album instead of this one.

2008's Saints of Los Angeles also merits a couple of inclusions, namely the title track - probably the best song Motley Crue has recorded in nearly 20 years - and a remixed version of "The Animal In Me" that's so soaring and symphonic that it doesn't sound much like a Motley Crue song at all.

There are a lot of great songs on this collection (and some not-so-great ones), but if you have one or more of the band's previous compilations, it's hard to see how this set is remotely necessary. Still, there will probably always be a market for a Motley Crue Greatest Hits album, and this one is a pretty good value for the money, with 19 songs and a remastering job that puts the old and new material on the same audio quality level.

1.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe it!, November 11, 2010
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Another "Greatest hits" album! Really?????

First of all I think these bands have the concept wrong, a Greatest Hits album is a collection of songs that made it to the charts and were somehow successful. If the songs were never released as singles, then that is not considered a "hit", and what you are putting together is a collection of songs, then it should be call "Best of".

Second of all, being a hardcore fan for more than 20 years now, is very frustrating that again, they are putting out a collection of hits on an album just to rip off fans, this is basically the same collection of songs we saw first on "Decade of decadence", then on the original "Greatest hits", then on the live album, then on the millennium series, then on the box sets, and now here, I mean, do I need to find the same f... songs on 5 different albums!?

I'm a true fan, and not only I have all the original records, I also have some vinyl's and the box sets, but when I see this kind of stuff I just get furious because this is exactly what is ruining the music industry, when bands and record labels put together this kind of crap it just makes the fans so angry that we don't even want to buy the albums anymore.

Even the artwork on this crap is the same as SOLA and the original "Greatest hits" album, so what's the point to buy this?, a new version of one mediocre song?, save your self some money and don't even bother buying this worthless cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound update, September 25, 2010
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Yes they sorta "updated" the greatest hits album of yesterday, but unlike some updates from other bands, the Crue did it right..much better sound, very well mixed, sound is unbelievable.

Now I'm not a big Crue fan, I was into Led Zep, Deep Purple, Bad Company, the classic rock, when hair came around and David Coverdale decided to go from Classic Rock to Hair, I dismissed that period, but just recently I realized in my mid 40's I've been listening to a lot of Jazz, classical, and not enough pure throat rock and so I purchased this CD popped it in my car stereo and they came saw and conquered and it was good. Motley is to Hair as the Doors was to classic rock, every person in that groups contributes as a whole to make that sound. Just took me about 20 years to buy a CD from them and "get it".

The Crue has been around since the early 80's .They should have enough stuff for a greatest hits 2 cd. If I Die Tomorrow,Saints Of LA and The Animal In Me are a good way to start a second greatest hits cd. Then songs like Live Wire, Piece Of Your Action, and Starry Eyes would also be good to include.

Even if you already own "Decade of Decadence" I believe this 2009 Greatest Hits compilation is by far the best. The bass has far more "whump" that any other title. I also enjoyed the inclusion of a few of the earlier cuts (Too Fast 4 Love, Too Young 2 Fall in Love)overlooked in previous GH compilations.
It even gives you a taste of 4-5 recent tracks which are just OK.

After "Shout at the Devil" the Crue was kind of hit or miss. When "Theater of Pain" came out I was so disappointed that I gave up on them until "Dr. Feelgood" was released. I bought the CD simply to have the songs I knew I would listen too so that I wouldn't have to suffer through all of the other junk. Good way to save some money, but nothing really extraordinary here.
