Past Meets Present,

This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
If you were and still are a diehard New Kids on the Block fan, then you should remember how they affected your childhood, your choices, and your upbringing. Hearing this CD honestly took me back in time to a place where carefree days are now a cherished memory. All the songs are classic NKOTB style and the megamix brings many of the top signature lyrics together into one song. This CD makes me appreciate how hard they worked back then and how hard they're working now on their new album, "The Block." This CD would be absolutely GREAT for the new generation of young fans today! They would get a chance to know the New Kids from back in the day, fast forward to today, and realize what a journey they have taken. I would highly recommend this album to those who do not have their old albums to get a gist of what "NKOTB Style" exactly means.

Takes Me Back In Time,

There is no other group that takes me back to my childhood as much as the New Kids On The Block. I loved them when I was growing up and I am thrilled that they are making a comeback. I remember so clearly when the Step By Step album was released. I listened to it nonstop all summer long and nearly wore the cassette tape out. All of the songs on this CD are wonderful. Perfect for a first time listener or for a longtime fan like myself. If you are a fan of NKOTB then this CD is a must have.

I never thought I'd see the day when the New Kids had a greatest hits album out. I can't say that I grew up with their music as a teenager, but I liked them. Jordan Knight Joey McIntire and the rest of the guys sound pretty good. The songs "Hangin Tough", "Please Don't Go Girl", "Cover Girl", "Step By Step" and "I'll Be Loving You Forever" are teen pop classics from the late 80s and early 90s. Donnie Wahlberg sounds good on "The Right Combination". Joey shows his vocal skills on the track "Stay The Same". These two tracks are not part of their classics, but they sound very good. This is a good disc.

I received this CD yesterday and have been listening to it non-stop. The selection of songs is great -- I didn't realize how quickly it took me to remember all their songs, esp. the ones that came out after I turned my teenage obsession back to New Edition.
Small problem though -- the CD case came bent and cracked and the CD itself looks like it went through a storm to get to me. Open your package with caution.

These guys are still and have always been extremely talented singers. All of them can stand on their own, and their harmonies are really beautiful. This is a good come back album.

A Trip Down Memory Lane,

Now dealing with bills and careers, I reminice about the carefree days of my childhood.
Listening to this compilation album took me back to that era. It was a time of big hair and big dreams. MTV still played music and the Boston 5 were HUGE on rotation. I was never able to score tickets to any of their concerts--always sold out. But I devoured their albums. My favirote was Donnie!

Ahhh, the New Kids on the Block is back - with a very nice collection of their classic hits, as well as a few bonus tracks. Not to mention their newest release, "The Block". Good to see them back in action.
I once owned a copy of "Hangin' Tough" on cassette, way back in 1989, but I never replaced that with either a new CD or LP vinyl. I suppose that I had 'outgrown' them before the appropriate time. Then, that's when "Step By Step" came along - but I didn't get a copy of the song "Step By Step" until way later. I admit I'm 38 now, and yet I still enjoy their music to this day. But then, why not? Besides, I was a teenager in the late '80s. Although I have heard quite a few songs on this CD here, I have yet to get my copy of it. Besides, I'm also a paying member of Rhapsody.com, and this album is included there for downloading and listening to as well. Rhapsody is usually very good at keeping up with the latest music releases, as well as re-issues of the classic albums I grew up with. Anyway, one of my top favorites on this CD is the opening track "Step By Step". I also have a copy of that song on a multi-artist CD I bought in 1998, called Rock On 1990. But if I had to choose a favorite from this CD right here, the "Greatest Hits" release, I'd have to pick "If You Go Away". Although obviously a recent recording by NKOTB, it's got that classic late-80s sound and style to it. Perhaps the only thing I don't like about it is that the song fades out a bit too quickly at the end. Had I been the composer, I would have at least put a nice finale at the end of this number. But otherwise, that song is marvelous. I also checked the other NKOTB albums available both here and on Rhapsody, and "If You Go Away" is included on this album exclusively. Perhaps it was a demo song recorded years earlier, and they included it here as a bonus track, but I really couldn't set that in stone. Some feedback would be appreciated and helpful here. Perhaps the one thing I like about "If You Go Away" is that it also sounds very much like a few 80s-era ballads done by the BeeGees. I have a copy of the latter group's 1989 album "One", and it is also wonderful. My three favorites on it are "Bodyguard", "Tears", and "Wish You Were Here". But then, that's a whole different story there. Once again, I am indeed glad the New Kids on the Block have made a recent comeback. I just hope their legacy will live on for a bit longer. They have been around for almost 21 years now. But you never know... |
