Wait a minute. This is the biggest ripoff I've probably seen in all of my years of record buying. And believe me, that's quite a few years (to say the least). NONE, count 'em, NONE of these songs were recorded in the 1980s. Yes, the originals were, but that's the problem. Not one of the tracks on this disc are the original versions. This is Starship featuring Mickey Thomas covering several Jefferson Starship songs, Starship's biggest hits, plus an Elvin Bishop Group number that he sang on ('Fooled Around and Fell in Love,' a huge hit back in 1976) thrown in for good measure. This isn't Starship. This is Mickey Thomas.Unfortunately, the performances aren't anything to write home about either. Thomas sings his former singing partner Grace Slick's parts in a lackluster way. Sure, this is a great concept, and I think my rating would be higher if they would have retitled the disc. But this is a marketing scheme. Plain and simple. Go buy a Starship (or Jefferson Starship) album that bares the RCA, Legacy, or Sony BMG title on it, as it is official. These are remakes that Thomas and company have made in this century. If you want to hear what Mickey Thomas has been up to lately, by all means buy this. Otherwise, seek out a compilation from the folks at BMG, who actually own the rights to the original recordings. Trust me, you'll be MUCH happier doing it that way. NOT RECOMMENDED. |
