5.0 out of 5 stars The Essential Pam Tillis, July 21, 2002
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Pam Tillis broke onto the scene in 1991 with her debut album PUT YOURSELF IN MY PLACE. Immediately she became a hit, with her blend of country and her sweet and memorable voice. Her first hit single was "Don't Tell Me What To Do", followed by the hit which defined her career, the ballad "Maybe It Was Memphis". This was followed by hits such as the fun and spirited "Shake the Sugar Tree", and the beautiful ballad "Let That Pony Run". Probably one of her cathiest songs is the uptempo song "Cleopatra, Queen of Denial". "Spilled Perfume" is one of my favorites, about a one night stand. "When You Walk In The Room" is classic, and "In Between Dances" is a really sweet ballad. "Mi Vida Loca (My Crazy Life)" is another fun uptempo song, and the closing "The River and The Highway" is a beautiful ballad about two scorned lovers, with one of the most beautiful videos I've seen in country music. The GREATEST HITS also includes two great new songs. "All The Good Ones Are Gone", the first single from the set, is a ballad relenting that all the good men are taken, and that time may be running out. "Land of the Living" is my favorite though, a fun upbeat song about telling someone to join the land of the living, because things have changed. Overall you can't lose with this collection, its essential listening, and reminds you what a shame it is she is no longer played anymore on country radio.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Greatest Hits" album that's REALLY a greatest hits album!, April 23, 2005
By
Bruce in Chapel Hill (Chapel Hill, NC, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
The title "so-and-so's greatest hits" is slapped onto too many albums these days, even when many of the singer's Top 10 hits are missing, and when the hits on the album are diluted with a number of less-great songs. But this Greatest Hits album is exactly what it claims to be. Pam Tillis had 13 top 10 singles between 1991 and 1997 (two of which were introduced on this album); 11 of those 13 hits are on this 12-track CD. And the sub-top-10 12th track that appears in place of the 2 missing Top 10 songs, both of which peaked at No. 6, is "Cleopatra", a classic that HAS to be on a Pam Tillis greatest hits album even if it didn't crack the top 10. You can buy this album with confidence you're getting essentially all of Pam's best-known hits and no filler.

Oh - and I really like Pam's songs and her singing. So with all that going for it, how can I rate this CD at anything less than 5 stars?

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW WHAT A VOICE!!, May 11, 2005
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This is one of the best CDs I've ever owned!! Pam Tillis has one of the most beautiful voices in country music. This album includes some of her best songs from the 90's. Her frist song "Don't Tell Me What To Do" was the song that first put her on the map, in 1991. Other hits like "Maybe It Was Memphis" and "Shake The Sugar Tree" followed. This album produced 2 top ten hits, "Land Of The Living", and "All The Good Ones Are Gone". Really a wonderful collection of hits. A must have for any country fan's collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pam Is The Best!, December 7, 2003

Of all the "modern" female country singers, Pam Tillis most certainly reigns supreme above all other. "Greatest Hits" is a wonderful collection of Tillis's most memorable songs and beautiful ballads. My pick from this album is the beautiful "The River and the Highway" which is one of my favorites of any type of music. There are up-beat classic as well. "Queen of Denial" "Shake the Sugar-Tree" and "My Crazy Life" are all magic to the ear, and of course "Maybe it was Memphis" makes the cut. Pure country gold.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like a Nicotine Fix, June 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I initially bought this CD for the one song I knew -- Maybe It Was Memphis -- which I would blast every time I heard it on the radio. I just got to the point that I couldn't wait for the radio stations to get back around to it in their rotations. The remaining numbers are a pleasant surprise. Please note that I've only been listening to country for about 6 months, and I'm only now becoming pretty familiar with various country artists. This compilation of Pam's makes me want to search out her other offerings for other musical jewels of which I'm currently unaware.

If you're not a country fan already, but thinking about giving it a shot, you can't go wrong starting here.

Pam Tillis was one of the most powerful voices in the country music explosion of the 90s. Her songs combine great vocals and infectious melodies with lyrics that speak to women of all ages. If you want a time capsule of the greatest country music of the 1990s buy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars overlooked country singer, September 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I am glad I came across this cd from a overlooked artist (at least by me) to add to my collection. I believe in staying on my feet for the 45 minutes before going to bed to make laying in bed more inviting, and so I walk around my house while playing selected favorite songs from my cd's, which heretofore consisted of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patsy Cline, Trisha Yearwood, Olivia Newton John, Tammy Wynette and others (yes, I like the women singers). I remembered MAYBE IT WAS MEMPHIS but had forgotten the other hits by Pam Tillis. Her unique voice and style now are firmly embedded in the songs I select at night. This is a can't miss excellent recommendation cd.
