No Pleasure,
By Top Cat (Denver, Co and sometimes Omaha, Ne) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I didn't like it once I reviewed the cuts on it. Glide is on it way to many times, and for all you real Pleasure fans you know there were a whole lot of other jams than just Glide. Don't get me wrong it was a nice cut but come on, three times? Anyway, I had the pleasure of meeting there former bassist Nathaniel Phillps 9 Aug 02 in Denver, Colorado playing with Jeff Lorber, was anybody there? Anyway I asked him was there any kind of way of getting any of the individual C.D.s other than the greatest hits stuff? And he said try Fantasy and RCA, they use to be the records labels they were under. I've tryed and there were no happenins. So help a brotha out if you find something out. By the way I have the "Best of Pleasure" it has a better selection than "The Greatest of Pleaure" C.D.

I give this 4 stars cause it's pleasure. I've been a HUGE pleasure fan since I used to rock "lets dance" on the wheels back in the 70's. The "Accept no Substitute" (Ghetto of the mind, dance, etc) and "joyous" (title track, "let me be the one"...) are two of the best funk/jazz-yes I said jazz) lps recorded during the jazz/funk heyday. I have every pleasure joint on vinyl and I'll never let them go. Why the albums aren't available on CD is still a mystery to me. Nate philips is on jeff lorber's(another jazz/funk great) new philly joint. check it out.

I grew up listening to this as a teenager, and the track "Glide" was, and still is the jam. As for the other cuts, I'm sure they are alright, but buying this album means having that one super funk classic in my archives, and that was worth the price. Glide gives off the feeling of cool urban modernity mixed with the hard funk groove that has somehow gotten lost in more recent styles of urban music.

Such A Pleasure...,
By yygsgsdrassil "yygsgsdrassil" (Crossroads America) - See all my reviews

...my days in grad school were filled with records from these guys and Confunkshun (where is "Candy" by CFS?). My job here is to point out to those who have had the same experiences with music that I have and who are looking for those rarities like this one ("Glide" was the party jam but "Future Now" and "The Real Thing" has some jazz mild enuff to please the palatte...) that now you don't have to settle for the disatisfaction of some shortened version of "Glide" on an ol' skool compilation. It is here unedited.

I remember I must of been about 10 years old when "Glide" came out. Man that song alone brings back when one use to glide on the skates. I still enjoy this song today and it makes me want to bring out my rollerblades instead now.

I had this album when I was a young man and it was slammin, especially Joyous and Sasafras girl. I grew up with Tony Collins, we played basketball in Meade schoolyard just down the street from our houses. He had a killer jumpshot not to mention how he played the trumpet. He and my highschool girlfriend both played the trumpet, I knew he was going to make it and this was just one of the bands he played in. Good choice and good skills.

Pleasure's "Very Best Of" CD A Tad Average,

If you listen to this CD, you'll see why pleasure was a one-hit-wonder with the tune "Glide" back in 1979. I personally like all three versions of the tune here. But it seems the band tried to adopt this Earth, Wind & Fire-meets-Tower Of Power concept with tunes like "Lets Dance", "Dance To The Music", and "Future Now" and fell a bit short. "Glide" will always be a old school classic, with various bass players covering it on YouTube. Even the rap version done by Psycho here is just as good as any currently popular rap tune.

Where's my Pleasure?,
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
The only reason this gets four stars is because I am such a big fan of this band. Now I'm telling my age sort of if folks remember this show. All I'm gonna say is that I helpled them out at the San Jose state University show back nin the day when they opened up for Roy Ayers. So you know that show was "DOPE on a ROPE". Anyway I digress. The band as I remember was out of Portland ,Oregon. And They had us stomping on the floor wanting more. This band was tight, right out the gate, the first song was "I'm Mad" and from there it just got better and better.
This disc boasts the greatest of pleasure but, it's not.... However ther are plenty good songs on here. But I could list another disc and a half more songs. And like other Pleasure fans I to would like to see the other Lp's come to light. The world is missing out on some great music. Whoever the gatekeeper for this band is shoot'em in the head. And, get this music back out to the public. And don't forget Marlon "the Magician" McClains' first solo Lp either. Holla, if you feel me!!!! DJ Warlock Out here in Cali.

THERE IS A MUCH BETTER COMPILATION ALBUM!!NOT MY 1st CHOICE.,

First of all let me start by sayng that the killer track on this album is Joyous which I play reguarly at clubs in Leeds,Enland.Secondly, if like me funk is your thang then skip this album altogether and order the mid priced CD The Best of Pleasure on BGP Records catologue [...] or buy both as there are a number of different tracks on each. What I can say is Pleasure are NOT a disco band, although there are disco influenced funk/jazz funk tracks on the albums. Sadly ther finest early albums (and all the rest for that matter)have to my knowledge never been available on cd although ther is a huge amount of funk being re-issued at the moment so ill keep my fingers crossed. The greatest of pleasure contains mainly ther weaker tracks from the late 70's whereas the BGP album contains more funk and no dissappointing clumsy ill fitting remixes either. Why do people put these on in the first place? They are always inferior and put on at the expense of what we want to listen to! [...], RESPECT!!!!KARLOS.
