Painting Musical Pictures,
By Tim Brough "author and music buff" (Springfield, PA United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Greatest Hits - The Rembrandts (Audio CD)
Danny Wilde and Phil Solem had a knack for catchy but low-key pop, a skill that served them to semi-successful effect through their working partnerships. With this best of, they get a little respect. Starting with the sole album by Great Buildings, a pair of new-wave almost hits show the pair's way with an energetic hook (and produced a KROQ classic in "Hold On To Something"). But then a ten year hiatus took place, after which they reunited and christened themselves The Rembrandts.
They were a bit more mellow than the old skinny-tie sound. The first top 20 hit was a hooky Beatle-esque number called "Just The Way It Is Baby," and comparisons to artists of the time like Crowded House or Michael Penn. The second album, Untitled, had an almost hit with the melancholy "Johnny Have You Seen Her" and (not included here) the fab-faux "Chase The Clouds Away." Then lightning struck. A chance request with the creator of "Friends" led Danny and Phil to knock off a quickie theme song that became so popular that DJ's were home-taping it from their TV's and editing a three minute version together. Hastily written to a full length single and attached to their 3rd CD, LP, "I'll Be There For You" was an instant hit, taking the album platinum and finally giving The Rembrandts a broad success. It also torpedoed them as one-hit-wonders. Phil left before Danny finished the jangley-pop Spin This!, which was rich in both Beatles and Byrdsian influences. It also fell on deaf ears, despite stellar songs like "Long Walk Back." The duo returned/reunited for 2001's Lost Together, but by then The Rembrandts' time was past. They still tour and make music together. This best-of provides ample proof of the duo's solid songcraft and more than a few 'shoulda-been' hits. Incidentally, get this over the Choice Picks, which are faithfully re-recorded version of some of Phil and Danny's favorites...but still are remakes.

Great Compilation...But Missing a Few Favorites,
By
This review is from: Greatest Hits - The Rembrandts (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of The Rembrandts since the early 90's. Obviously they gained popularity from their hit "I'll Be There For You". But there were other great songs that no one ever knew about, such as "Chase The Clouds Away", "If Not For Misery", and "I'll Come Callin'". I can't give this CD 1 star because I enjoy their music too much to give it a bad review. Instead I awarded this 3 stars.
First the positive: It's a full compilation. Some greatest hits packages may consist of 10-12 songs where this one has 18. I like to be able to put the CD in and know that i'm going to be listening to it for awhile. The producers did pick out some great songs to include, from the obvious "I'll Be There For You" and "Just The Way It Is Baby", to the lesser known and one of my favorite Rembrandts songs, "If Not For Misery". Even though I do thoroughly enjoy The Rembrandts music, I can not give this a higher rating due to the omission of a few of my other favorite Rembrandts tunes. For some bands, it's difficult to put together a compilation like this as if every song wasn't a radio hit then you just have to pick the best of what's left after including the songs that were obvious hits. Fans will always be unhappy to an extent as everyone has a different favorite song. As a previous reviewer said, I really would have liked to see "Chase The Clouds Away" included here. I also would have loved to see "I'll Come Callin'" (from the same album that "Chase The Clouds Away" is on), and also "Burning Timber" and "Goodnight" from the the white cover self-titled CD, and "Eloise" from the Danny Wilde and The Rembrandts album "Spin This". "Goodnight" would have been a nice closing track and not a big inconvenience to include since it's only 1:27 long! All-in-all a very good compilation that I added to my collection with the rest of The Rembrandts. But as is unfortunate sometimes, some of the better songs were not included.

Typical Grt Hits Package,
By Steffenwolf (Trinidad, WI) - See all my reviews

I've been waiting years for a Rembrandts GH CD and what do they do? Pull the same stunt that record companies do with most GH collections - leave out the best song. Where is "Chase the Clouds Away?" I'm giving this 1 star because there isn't a lower rating.
