Chaka Khan! Sublime...,
By Eliott Marten (Chamblee, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Rpkg) (Audio CD)
Chaka Khan has proven to be a stalwart recording artist, over the past 35-plus years. She's managed to produce some of the most important R&B classics, since her beginnings with the multi-racial R&B group, Rufus, in the early 70's, who'd produced such gems as 'Tell Me Something Good', 'Sweet Thing', and 'Do You Love What You Feel?'
Iher inaugural single, the blazing Gospel flavored 1978 Gospel flavored pop anthem 'I'm Every Woman' was any indication of things to come, her fans were in store for some real treats from Ms. Khan. Fortunately, more often than not, Chaka had managed to titilate her listeners with fantastic vocals and very imaginative arrangements, courtesy of her longtime mentor and producer Arif Mardin. Epiphany captures some of the highlights of Chaka's illustrious and inspirational music career. Most of the songs capture her works through the 80's, with a few tags that helped her to remain current with the 90's crowd. It's hard to name a single favorite Chaka Khan song, since there are so many great ones and even those that aren't considered great are done very well and warrant multiple listens. Chaka's appeal has always been with her fantastic, versatile, full bodied 4-octave voice, used to full effect. Add to that, she's one of the most successful recording artists to create a soundscape comprised of her multi-layered background vocals to transcend simple songs to works of art. Among my favorites are 'Ain't Nobody', 'I Feel For You', 'A Night In Tunisia', 'I Know You, I Live You' and 'Through the Fire'. Some songs that missed on this collection are 'This Is My Night', 'Tearin' It Up', 'Be Bop Medley' and 'Tight Fit'. All in all, for anyone with an interest in Chaka, you will find out why she's managed to remain relevant in today's world of music. She's really 'Every Woman'.

what a voice!!,
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Rpkg) (Audio CD)
Love the way this woman sings!! Total passion and amazing power. All the songs you've heard are here. The one thing I'd like to see added is a few of the more popular club/extended versions, where she really tears it up. Not sure that stuff has been released on any album though.
If you're a casual Chaka Kahn or Rufus fan, this is the CD for you! But be warned that you'll end up wanting the entire catalog because this stuff is good!!
