Great collection of songs from the underrated Mr. Big,
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Rpkg) (Audio CD)
Mr. Big is rock and pop at it's finest. This "Greatest Hits" package covers their best songs and all of those that made it to the FM airwaves. Why Mr. Big never hit the main-stream remains a mystery to me. Perhaps that is part of their appeal - Mr. Big was never overplayed - thus you never got tired of them or a particular song of theirs. Eric Martin (vocals), Paul Gilbert (original guitarist), Ritchie Kotzen (replacement guitarist), Billy Sheehan (bass), and Pat Torpey (drums)... these guys are all master craftsman with their instruments. Might I also add that Sheehan is a modern day God with the bass guitar. The band enjoyed some scattered hits (never a top 10 hit tho) and some moderate airplay on the hard rock FM airwaves. 16 tracks here with half of these tracks coming from their first two releases. Mr. Big's debut (1989) was raw and filled with energy - the opening cut, "Addicted To That Rush", is still one of my favorite rockers. Their 2nd release from 1991 ("Lean Into It") is easily their successful best and most complete album. 5 songs are taken from "Lean Into it" here including "Green Tinted Sixties Mind", "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy" and "Alive & Kickin'". "Bump Ahead" (1993) is probably their 3rd best album - with 3 songs featured here including the rocking in-yer-face "Colorado Bulldog". Only gripes with this "Greatest Hits" is that they included the sad remake of Cat Stevens' "Wild World", and a few personal favorites that are missing ("Electrified", "Rock & Roll", "Trapped In Toyland", "Lost In America", "Static"). Mr. Big started out much stronger and heavier in the early years of their career and then tailed off toward more radio friendly rock and power ballads. Overall a great package from Rhino from a sadly underrated rock band. If you own nothing from Mr. Big, this "Greatest Hits" package is a great place start... or with their best studio release "Lean Into It".

It's too bad Mr. Big is no more. Even though the music is from the 80's it is still one of my favorites and I listen to it all the time. I really enjoy the collection of songs on this CD. If you are a Mr. Big fan this CD is a must.

I used to like Mr. Big in the 80's. This CD is a good collection.
