5.0 out of 5 stars the best of the early years, October 11, 2004
This collection contains some of the strongest songs of Steven Curtis Chapman's early career, and serves as a launching pad for all the albums to come. He has grown in strength and confidence over the years, and this album singles out those tracks that have captured him at his peak through each stage.

Two brand new tracks, Not Home Yet and I Am Found In You, give us a glimpse of the Steven Curtis Chapman to come - a much more audibly passionate and uninhibited artist than when he first started out. New versions of Lord of the Dance and The Walk (recorded at Abbey Road Studios) start to capture some of the energy found in Chapman's live performances.

With so many excellent songs to choose from, it must have been difficult to narrow it down to these 14 tracks. You may be surprised at some of the songs that are missing, but you definitely won't be disappointed with any of the ones that made the cut.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Great Songs, February 10, 2002

I don't envy the person who had to put this collection of songs together. Trying to pick the best of Steven Curtis Chapman's songs is incredibly hard. Almost every song he's done is powerful. Yet, this CD has captured some of his best work to date.

There are two new songs included in this collection. "Not Home Yet" is a reminder to keep going because Heaven is our ultimate home. "I Am Found in You" is a prayer of commitment to God because He loves and cares for us. Both of these songs add greatly to the collection.

There are some no-brainers in the list of classics. For example, this CD had to include his multi-Dove winner "The Great Adventure" as well as his wedding classic "I Will Be Here." I was especially glad to see "His Eyes," a personal favorite of mine that I've felt is under appreciated. The rest of the selections are just as good and deserve a place here. I was a little surprised at a couple of the songs that got left out, but I can't imagine what they would have replaced.

Long time fans will love having this collection of what are truly his greatest songs. They'll especially love the notes where he discusses the inspiration behind these songs. Those unfamiliar with Mr. Chapman's work will find a good introduction to his career that should wet their appetite for more. All in all, a great CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christian rock worth playing on mainstream radio., January 7, 2003

Mr. Chapman alternates between praising God and exploring the simple joy/reward of the Christian lifestyle in this toe tapping collection that ranges from ballads to harder edge rock. Being a Greatest Hits collection means there isn't a loser to be found, just an hour or so of good, finger snapping/head nodding music to be savored. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy and Enjoy!, April 8, 2004
Anyone who even mildly likes Steven Curtis Chapman will not be disappointed with his best hits collection.

While my personal favorite is The Great Adventure, the other songs in the cd are great also. Among the other hits are: For The Sake of the Call, Heaven in the Real World, I Will Be Here, and More to This Life.

All in all, a highly recommended cd containing an excellent collection of songs!

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD has everything, November 27, 2000
By A Customer
I'm fairly new to the Contemporary Christian music scene (with the exception of Michael W. Smith) so I didn't know very much about Steven Curtis Chapman until this CD came out. A friend loaned it to me and I immediately got my own copy. I usually prefer upbeat songs with a lot of guitar so I like every fast number here, especially I Am Found in You, The Great Adventure, and Lord of the Dance. However, he does such a wonderful job on the slow songs that I like them too, especially the first two, Not Home Yet, and There's More to This Life, which is especially an inspiration to me. It really makes me stop and think about what's really important to me, my relationship with God and the wonderful family He's given me. I'll definitely be adding more SSC to my collection soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great way to get introduced to SCC, October 7, 2005
I really like Steven Curtis Chapman's songs. The music is very good guitar-driven rhythms and the lyrics are great. This Greatest Hits cd captures the best songs from the first half of his career (First Hand to Signs of Life). I wish it would have included "Let Us Pray" and "I Will Not Go Quietly", but other than that I found it to be a wonderful way to hear a lot of his songs. This CD is a great place to start you SCC collection; I'm sure Greatest Hits 2 is in the working to gather songs from his latest cds (Speechless, Declaration, All About Love, and All Things New). Now go out and get it! (I would have given it 4.5 stars but amazon does not allow that yet!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Saddle Up Your Horses, September 18, 2000

If you are already a hardcore SCC fan, you probably don't need to buy this CD because you already have all the songs (with the exception of 2 new tracks--which are good) on other CDs. But if you have always liked what you have heard of SCC's music, but haven't purchased any of his CDs, this would be a good one to buy. Like any greatest hits collection, people are going to have problems with some of the songs chosen (or more likely NOT chosen) as SCC's "Greatest Hits." I am personally disappointed that "My Heart's Cry" didn't make it onto this CD; but overall, I think the CD offers all of SCC's biggest hits and plays well. It is lyrically very uplifting, and prepares us to "abandon it all, for the sake of the call."

A friend gave me this cd during a very painful period in my life. I really needed God's strength and felt it as I listened to the cd. Especially tracks 7,11,and 12. Nothing else gave me as much strength and courage as those songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD (though I would say that for all his work)., June 30, 1998
I can not even begin to say how much of a blessing the music of Steven Curtis Chapman has been in my life. I can honestly say that his songs have always been an encouragement when I needed it most and have played a huge role in my growth as a Christian.

Though this is not the exact compilation I would have chosen, (for example, how could he have omitted the song "Higher Ways"??) I think it is worth buying the CD just for the new songs.

However, this is a particularly great place to start if you have never heard his music before. (You will not regret it.) Recommended.

P.S.: "Higher Ways" is on the album "For the Sake of the Call"

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Man, August 27, 2004
While, I'm not a "marching in line" conventional, conservative type Christian, I can appreciate Steven's heartfelt melodies and searching lyrics. In some of his lyrics I find an innocence that is refreshing, refreshing in this day and age when a lot of people assume they KNOW all the answers. He is less arrogant than some of the other contemporary Christian singers.
