Capitol wants cash, sells out Suzy,
By Spin Doctor "Doc" (Champaign, Illinois, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Suzy Bogguss - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
If you followed Suzy's hitmaking days, you may remember that this, her first "hits" CD, came out well after the release of two top 5 songs, "Just Like the Weather" and "Hey Cinderella"...neither of which was included. You may also recall that the disc's liner notes, written by genuine Suzy admirer Patsi Cox, refer to the inclusion of "Night Rider's Lament", which in fact does not appear on the CD. Finally, the lovely cover photo was a leftover from the "Voices in the Wind" photo session several years earlier. Bottom line, this was clearly a cheap, rush-it-to-market product which gave unfortunate evidence to every suspicion that Capitol records was more than willing to sell out its middle-tier artists (Suzy, Billy Dean, John Berry, Tanya Tucker) for the bucks needed to keep the Garth machine happy. Suzy deserved much better, and she finally got closer to it in 2002 with the release of her "20 Greatest Hits," a much better package that includes most of her hits plus a good assortment of her better album tracks. Go there.

Enjoyable Album by a First-Rate Vocalist,
By Lori Patton (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Suzy Bogguss - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Suzy Bogguss' Greatest Hits album is an excellent compilation of her biggest radio hits along with a few other gems. "Letting Go" is my favorite song of hers, partly because it was released while I was in high school so I could relate to it. This song is about a mother/daughter relationship as the girl leaves home for college and Suzy's interpretation is flawless. Other outstanding tracks include "Aces," "Someday Soon," "Drive South," and "Outbound Plane."In addition to these popular hits, the CD contains a few lesser known songs like "Hopelessly Yours," which is a duet with Lee Greenwood (famous for his rendition of "God Bless The USA") and "I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart," where Suzy showcases her yodeling ability. However, the album is missing a couple songs that would have made it even better -- "Hey Cinderella" and "Just Like The Weather." I am still giving the CD 5 stars though, because it is so enjoyable to listen to -- all the songs are great and there is no filler. Suzy Bogguss has one of the best voices in the genre and hopefully one day she will receive more radio airplay so we can all listen to her more often!

Pleasant songs from an underated vocalist,
This review is from: Suzy Bogguss - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
In the early 90's, Suzy had marginal success with these sweet country harmonies. This was a period that also gave us such talented singer-songwriters as Kathy Mattea and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Unfortunately, all of these ladies were soon swept aside by the country-pop of much less talented singers as Faith Hill and Shania Twain.Suzy has a sweet, pleasant singing voice. She doesn't scream to the rafters. Some people may find this style of music boring. But if you are looking for soothing pleasant melodies and someone who sings with a rich voice, this CD is for you. My favorite cuts are "Someday Soon", "Outbound Plane", "Letting Go" and "Aces". If you like Anne Murray, Kathy Mattea or Mary Chapin Carpenter, then you should enjoy this disc as well. Recommended.

Not so long ago, my folks and I went to the Dominican Republic. While we were getting off the plane we heard the Nanci Griffith hit "Outbound Plane," being played on the satelite radio. I couldn't figure out who it was. So when I got home, I noticed that the other person who sang it was Suzy Bogguss. I borrowed a copy of this album from a friend and now I have it on my iPod. She sure sings some great songs. Others that I like incluede, "Drive South," and "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart." Now I have just GOT to see her in concert. What a voice!

Country at its finest,

Suzy Bogguss sings with a strong contralto voice, who sings from her heart while identifying with the public. This album is a must for all country music fans and all who just want to enjoy some real music and not that of Run DMC and the Beasties boys. She is a delightful pleasure.

When I first heard "Someday Soon" I didn't know who was singing it. It came over the radio and I thought this woman's voice is amazing! I figured out it was Suzy Bogguss and purchased her Greatest Hits. Glad I did. Some great songs from The Voice of an Angel.

I first worked for Suzy on her initial big venue tour, she opened for an artist I was doing sound for and she didn't have a sound person so I reluctantly volunteered. It was the best decision I ever made and I became a lifelong fan. After the show, she tried to pay me and I said no, but said I would accept a copy of her CD and a t-shirt. (Somewhere Between) I have them to this day. Even though this album doesn't have my favorite Suzy song on it (Part of Me), it is as close as you will come to hearing the voice of an angel. Clear, pure, always right on pitch, and delivered straight from the heart. Next to underrated in the dictionary, they should put a picture of Suzy... and yes, she's pretty. (if that matters to you ;-)
