If you're a diehard Thin Lizzy/Phil Lynott fan who's been waiting for the ultimate CD remastering of the Thin Lizzy classics, this is the compilation to get. Spend the money, or try to find it used. I've been listening to this band and some of these tracks for over thirty years, and after listening to this remastering job, it's almost like I'm hearing some of these tracks for the first time. The remastering engineer should get a Grammy nomination. I'm not exaggerating...buy this now, end of story.

THE BEST THIN LIZZY EVER,
By
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This is the best greatest hits cd ever put together by thin lizzy. It includes the early hits like the rocker , and whiskey in a jar. Has some great songs on it from the Black rose cd with Gary moore on guitar. the only problem I had with this cd is i can't believe they put the short version of the rocker on it, not the long version that was on the Dedication cd. You miss out on the terrific guitar solo by Eric Bell.
But beggars can't be choosers. Over all this is the best of them all , so don't miss out on this one.

One of the better compilations,

This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
The best is obviously the Vagabonds Kings Warrior Angels box set, but this is a great retrospect into what was the great rock band Thin Lizzy. It also covers a few tracks from Phil Lynott's solo work. Dear Miss Lonely Hearts, King's Call, and the first 7" remix of Yellow Pearl. You know, the Top Of The Pops theme. Just a little thing to point out. On amazon, it lists Hollywood as being live from 1983. It's in fact from 1981. November 27 to be exact. It can also be found in a special edition of Thunder and Lightning, which features a bonus 12" live LP. I must say, the added crowd noise at the beginning sounds horrible. I have the FM broadcast of that show, and they go from Renegade straight into Hollywood. It just sounds a tad unnatural, but you get over it once it really gets going. Another side note, it's the same performance that is on the Life live album before being overdubbed. Are You Ready from this compilation though comes from the Life live album. Black Rose is not live as mentioned in the amazon tracklist. Emerald is though although amazon doesn't list it as being live. It's taken from Live and Dangerous, as is Rosalie / Cowgirl's Song. Just get it. It's a great compilation even though it leaves off some stuff, as all compilations do. Opium Trail or The Pressure Will Blow anyone? Correct tracklist below.1. The Boys Are Back In Town 2. Jailbreak 3. Don't Believe A Word 4. Dancing In The Moonlight (It's Caught Me In It's Spotlight) 5. Rosalie/Cowgirl's Song (Live 1976/Hammersmith Odeon, London, Live and Dangerous) 6. Waiting For An Alibi 7. Do Anything You Want To 8. Sarah (Version 3) 9. Chinatown 10. Killer On The Loose 11. Trouble Boys 12. Hollywood (Down On Your Luck Live 1981 Hammersmith Odeon, London) 13. Cold Sweat 14. Thunder & Lightning 15. Sun Goes Down 16. Dedication 17. Still In Love With You 18. She Knows 19. Yellow Pearl (First 7" Remix) - Phil Lynott 20. Whisky In The Jar (Full Length Version) 21. Out In The Fields - Gary Moore & Phil Lynott 22. Parisienne Walkways - Gary Moore & Phil Lynott 23. Emerald (Live and Dangerous) 24. Bad Reputation 25. Wild One 26. Fighting My Way Back 27. Showdown 28. Black Rose 29. Dear Miss Lonely Hearts - Phil Lynott 30. The Rocker (Single Edit) 31. Are You Ready (Live 1983, Life) 32. Renegade 33. King's Call 34. Angel Of Death 35. Cowboy Song (Live Sydney Opera House 1978) 36. The Boys Are Back In Town (Live Sydney Opera House 1978)

Great compilation of Thin Lizzy's best songs,

This 2 CD album contains just about every song the average Thin Lizzy fan would want. The songs are remastered so they sound better than some other Thin Lizzy compilations that I've heard. That was part of the reason I bought it. I already had some songs on it, but I wanted the better sound quality. Buy it and you won't be dissapointed.

Kick ass 70's rock with emotion and soul!!,

If you love Thin Lizzy as I do, you will enjoy this greatest hits package. Phil and the boys certainly had something that the music world really never took notice of and that's a crying same as these guys should have been way bigger than they were.
Thin Lizzy were a diverse band in many ways and this set list will give you some of that. The examples on here are great as Chinatown is a frikin' killer tune, (man I love those opening riffs) as is Sarah, but both are worlds apart as far as what they represent goes. From kick ass killer rock tunes to slower more romantic tunes (if I can use that term to describe how great these guys were?) are here. The song selection is very good with most if not all of the truly great Thin Lizzy offerings here. I do wish that Warriors was here though as that song is amazing!! Theirs no doubting that Thin Lizzy deserves to be recognized as a truly great band that gave us a lot in a short period of time. The lives cuts are cool and supposedly rare? The booklet/packaging is excellent stuff as it gives you some nice liner notes or thoughts as to what made this band tick. Overall a worth wile investment. Phil knew how to write a good song and is missed!! R.I.P. Phil lynott

If you want to, have to, neeed to know all things Thin Lizzy, then this is the compilation for you!!! Unlike its american counterparts, "Greatest Hits" is a truly career spannig compilation of...Thin Lizzy...? Yes, and no. It includes all the Thin Lizzy material that you might want, but it is more than a Thin Lizzy compilation...It is a Phil Lynott anthology. Picture Jimmy Hendrix being born in Ireland and playing bass instead of guitar...and you might have some idea of what Phil was all about.
Like Jimmy's own band, Thin Lizzy started as a power trio, with Phil handling bass and vocals, Brian Downey on drums and Eric Bell on guitar. This lineup was shortlived and, for the most part, unsuccesful. But then, Lizzy reinvented themselves: they added TWO lead guitar players, who would essentially create the dual, dueling guitar attack thas was to become the standard for countless hard rock/heavy metal bands to come. The first guitar duo was formed by Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham (the latter, along with founders Lynott and Downey, would remain in the band until the end), and this is still considered by most fans and critics to be Lizzy's most prolific lineup. Many guitar players would come and go into the band over the years to complement the Lynott-Downey-Gorham axis, including Gary Moore, Snowy White and John Sykes, each bringing something of their own, but without altering the essential chemistry of the band, which rested mostly upon Phil's inspired, working class songwriting and delivery. So yes, this compilation encompasses all of those different incarnations of the band and the music that they made, but it also includes some of Phil's solo work and collaborations, making it a true Phil Lynott retrospective. After all, Phil WAS Thin Lizzy, so it is only fitting that this compilation includes some of his work outside of the band, even if some of it might not appeal to hard rock fans. Indeed, tunes like "Yellow Pearl", "Dear miss lonely hearts" and "King's Call" might raise an eyebrow or two, but songs such as "Out in the fields" and "Parisienne Walkways" (both being collaborations with Gary Moore, and some of Phil's last recordings) are welcome additions. From Lizzy's material, you get all the classics, including "Black Rose" (sorry, Gary Moore freaks, not my fav tune...), "Jailbreak", "Waiting for an Alibi", "Rosalie", and tracks from later Lizzy albums, such as "trouble boys", "Cold Sweat", "Hollywood (Down on your luck)", "Sun goes down", "Renegade", "Thunder & Lightning", etc. This one has EVERYTHING!!! Now, one last thing: if you are looking just for a taste of Lizzy, I recommend you to stick with the single disc "Dedication". On the other hand, if you are already familiar with Lizzy's (and Phil's) work and want to have the best of it, this compilation is clearly the way to go!!! The choice is yours, but you CAN'T POSSIBLY go wrong with this one.

How in the world did I miss the title for so many years, and how / why in the world is it not more commonly released in the US ? Seriously this is all the Thin Lizzy you need and can take packaged in a wonderful Two CD comp. All the classic eras, hits, b-sides, and lastly Phil Lynott's latter days of his career are here as well as his teaming up with Gary Moore for a couple of gems as well. Great CD, Great price buy it now !

Hard-rocking Irish group of the seventies,
By
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Ireland seemed an unlikely place from which a group like Thin Lizzy would emerge - we all had an image of Irish music based on traditional folk and country music. Van Morrison (and his short-lived group Them) had ventured from the Emerald Isle into rock music and made a significant impact, but he seemed to be a one-off. Thin Lizzy changed all that, firmly establishing Irish rock music as a significant force . The Boomtown rats (with Bob Geldof), U2 (with Bono), the Undertones (with Feargal Sharkey), the Cranberries and many other Irish groups have followed Thin Lizzy in making a major impact on the world rock music scene.
Thin Lizzy first made an impact with a hard-rocking version of a traditional Irish folk song, Whiskey in the jar - it made the UK top ten in 1973. If you've heard the song performed in a more traditional style (perhaps by the Dubliners, who typify the traditional image of Irish music), the cover by Thin Lizzy may come as a bit of a shock, but the song sounds great whether performed in a traditional way or by Thin Lizzy. However, that track wasn't really typical of their music. Thereafter, Thin Lizzy abandoned their Irish heritage altogether and focused exclusively on rocking hard but it took a while for them to establish their career. Three years after their first hit, Thin Lizzy returned to the UK top ten with The boys are back in town, which is much more typical of their sound and was the first of fifteen UK hit singles that Thin Lizzy had between 1976 and 1983, during which time they also made the UK singles chart with an EP. Only two further hits after The boys are back in town (Waiting for an alibi, Killer on the loose) made the UK top ten but several others made the UK top twenty including Don't believe a word, Dancing in the moonlight and Do anything you want. The first CD of this compilation begins with those fifteen UK hit singles between 1976 and 1983, together with their 1991 hit (Dedication) ant three other tracks. The second CD begins with Whiskey in the jar. The remainder of the second CD contains selected album tracks and some solo recordings by Phil Lynott. Overall, the second CD is not quite up to the quality of the first but it's not far behind. This is the best Thin Lizzy collection out there. If you like hard rocking music, you'll love this.
