Editorial Reviews

Eight variations of Canon in D ? Don't raise eyebrows, this CD is amazing! The Baroque Chamber Orchestra plays a traditional version on Baroque instruments, James Galway contributes a Celtic-infused flute rendition, and singer Cleo Laine even interprets it with a vocal component! Other contributors include Festival Strings Lucerne, Canadian Brass, Plasma Symphony Orchestra and more!

Pachelbel's Canon in D is my very favorite piece of music, so when I received this CD as an "early Christmas present" I was really happy.
I absolutely fell in love with the first track, which is beautifully performed by the Festival Strings Lucerne. I am a great fan of Baroque music played on Baroque instruments, so I also loved track eight, performed by the Baroque Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Ettore Stratta.
I didn't think I would like track two, which is a flute rendition by James Galway. Although it does make the Canon sound more Celtic than German Baroque, I did like it, probably because I'm a big fan of woodwinds. I did think the inclusion of two tracks by James Galway was one track too many, though.
I'm not a big fan of brass instruments, nevertheless, track three, performed by The Canadian Brass was lovely and they did stick to the melody of the Canon, rather then going off on tangents.
Track four, variations of the Canon performed by the Concord String Quartet was a surprise to me. I thought I would love it because I love string quartets, but the variations were just "too varied" and they made Pachelbel's Canon, at its heart, uplifting and joyous, sound more like a funeral dirge.
Tracks five, six and seven I found rather horrifying. They are all more or less "New Age" renditions of the Canon and, as such, simply unacceptable to me. Especially horrid was track five, which contains, of all things, a vocal. Cleo Laine has a very nice voice, but Pachelbel's Canon simply does not contain a vocal!
I thought about giving this CD three stars, but I felt that would be doing a disservice to tracks one and eight, especially, which in my mind, are flawless.

I just bought this CD last week, and have listened to it non-stop. This is a must buy for anyone who is a fan of Johann Pachelbel, track number 1 Cannon in D is probably the most romantic piece of music of anytime. I have never heard any thing more beautiful, and if you are not a huge fan of classical music..give this CD a chance and you will be.

Pachelbel's Canon is definitely cream of the crop. It is for all ages and the more you listen to it, the more you appreciate it's beauty. I bought this CD as a gift for a friend. She said that this piece brought her tears, it was so beautiful.
Even though this collection is my favorite, I wish they had put in a piano solo. I also think that the vocalist in track 5 was not able to bring out the color in Pachelbel's Canon.
Overall, a brilliant collection of Pachelbel's greatest hit!

My husband and I used to listen to this every night before sleep. After he passed away, it was years before I could listen to it without crying my eyes out. I know that the original has no lyrics, as one poster mentioned, but I absolutely love that one. "When will we ever touch again"... speaks to my very soul. I am here buying it again because I wore out the first copy. You can't go wrong with this CD...

A Kid's Review on October 15, 2000

This CD is a masterpeice of the music world. Many of these reviews believe that track 5 was a bit of a dissapointment. I must admit that though I didn't care to much for track 5, the person who sang it has a lovely voice and really did a good job singing it. I must say that it was not the end of the world for the lovely little spot of music, but it probably could have fit in a bit of different place, or sounded a tad different. Having it in this CD was a bit of a bother, and if you listen carefully, the actual version of the song behind the pleasent singing would have done just fine without the beautiful vocal part.

Of course, everybody loves Pachelbel's Canon in D. There is no question about it - it is a great piece of music. But to listen to it eight times in a row is a bit more than one can endure. It probably wouldn't be so bad if the CD didn't contain two versions performed by James Galway. To listen how such a wonderful composition is turn it into commercial trash finished me off. It's a good Pachelbel didn't have to listen to James Galway. The Canon in D deserves better.

When I came across this CD I couldn't believe what just happened to me. There sat the best music I'd ever heard, but moreso, eight variations on it! The "How, Where, When" bit was a disappointment, but then again track five can always be skipped. Anyone who's ever enjoyed Canon must get this album. There will be no (lasting) regrets.

I have owned this recording for several months and have play it time and time again. I have to admit, I am not crazy about the Track 5 with the words and at times it can disrupt the flow of relaxation to hear someone softly singing but it isn't a disruption that merits a lower rating. I often use classical and instrumental music to not only relax to but I use it for control of chronic pain.
Pachabel is one of my favorite composers and this CD didn't let me down.
