5.0 out of 5 stars IT'S OVER, April 11, 2005
This review is from: Greatest Hits Vol.1 (Audio CD)
That's right the great KURUPT has drop'd a greatest hits album. All the classics are here, of course some like myself might feel a few are mssing. The album has 16 hits, 1 unreleased song [2 to some people], and 1 song that was out of place.

1.IT'S A SET UP-Kurupt shows us his lyrical ability on this classic track, the kind of flow we all know he is capabale of. Kurupt rides a brilliant track by D-MOET. The beat is excellent it was a perfect choice for this album. Another thing that makes me love this track is the great hook.

2.WHO RIDE WIT US-If there was one song kurupt could be really known for it would be this one. The one song from him even my grandmother knows. People that said they didn't even like kurupt that I know were caught bumpin this classic joint. And of course they would, the beat by FRED WRECK is enough to get any party started. This is also the song that introduced him to the world, or at least made him noticed [at least to me]. Also another reason this song is bangin is because the team of DAZ & KURUPT ride the beat with the same chemestry that made thier early work classics. Daz rips the first verse, Kurupt comes hard with the next, but the final verse is the best were they trade off. Plus BAD AZZ is on the hook.

3.ASK YOURSELF A QUESTION-DR DRE comes through to drop a beat and a verse on this track. Some people have said that they don't like this beat and that it is to simple, I like it. I think the beat is the perfect back drop for Kurupt and Dre to ride to. Kurupt even switches his flow up a little to glide along over the track. Dre also drops a dope verse after Kurupt drops the first two.

4.TRYLOGY-Kurupt rips the hell out of this track with a vicious flow, and even though the track is shorter than most songs the track is great. BINK did a great job with this murderous violin drivin track.

5.WE CAN FREAK IT-One of the greatest songs ever made with out a doubt. BATTLECAT created a beat so smooth and yet hits hard enough to blow the speekers that it unbelivable. The beat for this song is one of the greatest things to bless my ears. Plus the way Kurupt flows to the song fits its vibe perfectly. Also BABY S drops a short verse on here to add a little diffrent flavor.

6.THA HARDEST MUTHA ****AS-Fred Wreck returns to the mix with this hard hitting fairly simple beat. The beat sounds like what the title suggests, hard. The ensemble cast for this hard track consists of Kurupt, XZIBET, MC REN, and NATE DOGG. Each rips the beat apart with thier respective styles.

7.HO'S A HOUSEWIFE-Now the average rap consumer wouldn't even know that this is a remix from another Kurupt song of the same name off of "KURUPTION". The average rap consumer only knows this song from DR.DRE'S "2001", and dosn't know it also appeared on Kurupt's 2nd album "THA STREETZ IZ A MUTHA". Dre drops the beat on this track with a nice smooth feel to it, and also drops a nice verse along side a verse from the former AFTERMATH signed HITMAN. Of course the average rap consumer wouldn't know that Kurupt's verse is the same from the original.

8.GITTA STRIPPIN-Remember when I said that there was 1 song out of place, this is that 1. Don't get me wrong I like this song, the beat by Daz is hot no doubt, but it dosn't seem to fit the idea of a hit. I think this track could have been replaced with the single from that album [DPG:DILLINGER & YOUNG GOTTI] "COASTIN". I think that would have been a better selection.

9.GIRLS ALL PAUSE-Bink returns to the fold with one of the greatest beats I have heard. His production style fits Kurupt perfectly. Kurupt rips the beat with a modified flow, and younger brother ROSCOE drops a smooth little verse, it's Nate Dogg that makes the song a classic. The way he rides this instrumental is amazing.

10.SUNSHINE-Some people hate this song because of the beat provided by JON B. But I like the beat it is perfect for the summatyme. Kurupt rides the track perfectly, and Jon B's hook is great. His verse may have been a bit much, but it's ok.

11.GIMMIE WHUTCHA GOT-This east coast influenced track striaght up reminds me of the underground scene, and the lyrist lounge for some reason. Even the video was like that, of course it was on the eas coast disc from "KURUPTION" so it makes sense. The beat by MED is great and is very eastern influenced, and is perfect for Kurupt and BARSHAWN to trade lyrical gems to.

12.IT'S OVER-Ah yes the infamous song that some people say is to pop sounding, but I happen to like it for some reason. Plus if "WHO RIDE WIT US" isn't his most known song this is. Maybe the beat from JEEKY MAN & CHARM is a little diffrent for Kurupt but I still like it. Plus the hook is mad catchy, and NATINA REED'S verse is cool to. Also I love the video for this song, everybody was in it.

13.DIPP WIT ME-This Daz produced track hits hard in a major way. The beat alone is enough to bump this in the ride, plus add on some hot verses from Daz & Kurupt you have a hit. Plus it's always good to hear RBX with the pound again [DO U REMEMBER SERIAL KILLA].

14.TREAT HER LIKE A LADY-I happen to love this song, the beat from Daz & MIKE DEAN is a bouncy smooth joint. Plus hearing Kurupt & Daz adding some humor to thier flows is great. The ending for this is is the best part "I'LL TREAT U LIKE A LADY AND GIVE YA 5 DALLAZ"

15.THA STREETZ IZ A MUTHA-The beat by Daz and BLAQTHOVEN is one of the most g'ed up beats to hit the streets in a while. Some people think it is to simple, but like track 3 I like it. The way Kurupt and Daz tear this track apart reminds me of their eary days on DEATHROW.

16.FREAK IT OUT-this east coast remix of the classic "WE CAN FREAK IT" features the underated NOREAGA, and along side Kurupt they rip the track apart "POETICAL PENTAGON". The tight beat is provided by STEVIE J.

17.WHO RIDE WIT US REMIX-This is the track I was referring to as maybe 2 unreleased joints to some, that's because the average rap fan dosen't even know this track is around. But aside from that this is a worthy remix, Fred Wreck returns to his hit to remix it with a bouncy hard hitting futeristic style beat that all rips apart. Bad Azz stays on the hook along with some female, but Kurupt & Daz are not the only one's rapping this time. Roscoe also appears in the song and rips it followed by the leathal JAYO FELONEY. Kurupt and Daz return to the mix to add their touch to another hit.

18.ODD SQUAD-The very talanted DAMIZZA graces us with this bouncy instrumental, and TQ comes into play with a great hook. Kurupt rides this smooth track easily and ends the album with a great unreleased track.

ALL IN ALL THIS IS A GREAT CD FOR ANY REAL RAP FAN TO OWN. PLUS IT COMES WITH A DVD WITH THE VIDEOS OF

5.0 out of 5 stars Kurupt - Greatest Hits, November 13, 2005
This review is from: Greatest Hits Vol.1 (Audio CD)
This album is definately a banger. True west coast music here at its finest. I think SOME of these tracks are greatest hits and some, he just threw onto it, but none the less they are all hott tracks. I recommend this album to any who likes west coast gangsta music. "Who Ride Wit Us" is definitely one of the hottest tracks on the album. All the beats here keep everything vibin definitely. This album also has a pretty high replay value, when I got it I did listen to it quite a lot. Kurupt gots a sick voice with the beats he flows over.

Cop this album!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly "Greatest Hits", May 28, 2005
By
Crazy Jim (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greatest Hits Vol.1 (Audio CD)
Former Dogg Pound rapper Kurupt is easily one of the most underrated rappers to come out of the West. While he is probably best known as one-half of the now-defunct Dogg Pound duo with Daz, he has had some success as a solo star. His appearances on a number of tracks on Dr. Dre's "2001" album were impressive enough to nearly steal the show and his criminally-underrated second solo album, "Streetz Iz A Mutha" remains one of the best West Coast albums to come out of 1999. While some say his lyrical game has softened over the last couple years, it is hard to argue that Kurupt is one of the top veterans that the Left Coast has to offer.

"Greatest Hits, Volume 1" is interesting in that very little of Kurupt's most recognizable material is included. None of his early Death Row work is here. Even perhaps his biggest solo hit, "Behind The Walls" from the Oz soundtrack is absent. This is more or less just a collection of songs from his three solo projects on Antra. There is one unreleased song, "Odd Sqaud" featuring TQ and two rare tracks, "Freak It Out" with Norega and the all-star remix of "Who Ride Wit Us". The rest of the CD is straight from the Antra files (except for a few songs from the "Dillinger & Young Gotti" album). Bungalo didn't even bother to fix up the opening audio from "Sunshine" where the ending of "On, Onsite" can be heard fading out . Even the song credits appear to be taken directly from each album's respective CD booklet.

"Greatest Hits" is far from a solid representation of Kurupt's best work. It seems like whoever owned the rights to Kurupt's Antra catalog was just looking for a quick way to make some money off it. Very little effort was made to make this release worthwhile. If you already own Kurupt's three solo albums and "Dillinger & Young Gotti", there are only three tracks here that you don't have. If you don't own them, you'd be better off tracking them down than putting money into this one.
