Biography

by William Ruhlmann

During their initial 14 years of existence (1973-1987), Journey altered their musical approach and their personnel extensively while becoming a top touring and recording band. The only constant factor was guitarist Neal Schon (born February 27, 1954), a music prodigy who had been a member of Santana in 1971-1972. The original unit, which was named in a contest on ... Editorial Reviews

From 1978 through 1988, Journey was undisputedly one of the most popular and successful bands in the US. Their original studio albums were massive sellers, with more than 30 singles reaching Billboard's Top 100 charts. Journey's success grew with each release, selling out stadiums across the U.S., and for all intents and purposes inventing the AOR radio format (Album Oriented Rock). During the bands' hiatus in 1988, the Greatest Hits album was issued, surveying 15 tracks from the band s 7 albums. Over the years, Journey's music has been used in films and recently in several high-profile TV shows (particularly the song "Don t Stop Believin'"). Now 16X Platinum in the U.S., Journey's Greatest Hits has taken on a life of its own, garnering new fans who have discovered the band through shows like Glee, Family Guy, The Sopranos and American Idol. But as successful as Greatest Hits is, it's only a part of the Journey story. Several Top 40 and Top 20 singles were not included, as well as songs near and dear to principal songwriters Steve Perry, Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain. For those who love the Greatest Hits and want more, Columbia/Legacy is proud to release Greatest Hits Volume 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits Volume 2 November 1, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
In terms of song selection, buying Volume 1 and 2 is the same as buying the double disc, The Essential Journey that came out a few years ago. There are a couple pros. It's super cheap. They're probably around $5.00 each for Volume 1 and 2. Also, they finally got it right on a compilation album by including both "Feelin' That Way" and "Anytime" back-to-back like they always played it on the radio. I recommend it. If you like it, buy the remastered albums. Most of them are $5.00-$7.00 at many physical stores or online.

Note: I wish Sony/Columbia would remaster the first 3 pre-Steve Perry Journey albums. There's some great music on them. They're not out of print but are still the flat sounding late 1980's CD releases. Interesting fact: Gregg Rolie, vocalist for the Woodstock era Santana (1969-1972) is the singer and keyboard player on those albums. Neal Schon, who plays on all Journey albums, was also in Santana (1971-1972). In fact, he was the 2nd lead guitar player behind Carlos Santana. When those two disagreed with the musical direction Carlos Santana was headed, they left and formed Journey in 1973.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the real Journey with Steve Perry! November 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I'm so glad they finally released a Greatest Hits 2. There were so many songs missing from the first one. This is Steve Perry on vocals so you will get the original old school Journey!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, "Feeling That Way" and "Anytime" Back-to-Back! November 10, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Nothing sounds like the Seventies to me than hearing the quick cut between Journey's "Feeling That Way" and "Anytime". It still sends chills up my spine when I hear it! It has taken decades for Columbia to get it right in their compilations. This alone is worth the price of admission for this set.
