Nice versions of classic hymns.,

If you like classic hymns that are not jazzed up then this is for you. I really enjoy how the music is very simple - nothing electric. it is a very good CD when you want a break from other Christian pop music. However, there are a few things I did not like which is why I only gave it 4 stars. First I did not like the Amazing Grace version. It's just a personal preference but I felt like it was trying to be jazzed up and it did not work for me. And second, I was dissapointed that 3 of the songs on this album are repeats from the Hiding Place album. What I found great was the literature inside the case that gave a history of where each song orginiated from and how they have been altered slong the way to come to be versions that we sing in church. That was well done. All in all it's a great CD. But, I have the Hiding Place which is a great CD and if you have to choose between the 2 I would choose Hiding Place.

In response to the person below me's review about the repeat tracks from Hiding Place, if you're interested, you should know that this is a "Greatest Hits" album of sorts (hence the name Greatest Hymns). Three of the songs do not appear on previous Selah albums; the rest come from Be Still My Soul, Press On, and Hiding Place. It is a good album, though, and if you are either a completist or someone who doesn't own any of Selah's albums, Greatest Hymns is highly recommended.

My New Favorite Christian Group,
By Stephanie Anne "music & book nut" (Maine, USA) - See all my reviews

I've been listening to Selah's radio releases for years but never really gave them much attention until I heard "Be Thou My Vision". I had to run out and by this album; if it wasn't for iTunes and iPod, I'd be wearing out the CD! The three voices blend so well and their style is timeless. It's contemporary but classic at the same time. My other album favorites are "By and By", sung in an African language two of the artists learned as children, and "I Need Thee Every Hour". Nicol Sponberg has such an excellent alto voice. If you need to be selective on which CD of hymns to purchase, put this one at the top of your list of "must haves".
