5.0 out of 5 stars Barry Is The Greatest!
I grew up with these songs when I was in college and was wondering how I would like Barry's rendition of them. I'm wondering no longer - they are terrific! His version of "Open Arms" and "Never Gonna Give You Up" are my favorites on the cd and among the most played on my Zune.

2.0 out of 5 stars TRULY DISAPPOINTED
I've loved BM songs even since they started to come out during the 70's. I must say that I have almost every album in CD now and I was hoping this new deliver of 80's renditions would be kind of good... but no no no... My dear Barry, I don't think you'll have the Time Of Your Life with this CD... these songs aren't for you or your vocal tone... too low... too slow...

My dear Barry, I don't think you'll have the Time Of Your Life with this CD... these songs aren't for you or your vocal tone... too low... too slow... I'm sure there are much better songs that you could've chosen. The only cuts I like are ISLANDS IN THE STREAMS (because of the duo with Reba) and I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU (because of the samba-like feel you've put into it which makes it kind of interesting).

Better luck next time Barry!

1.0 out of 5 stars I am a huge "fanilow", June 3, 2010
This review is from: The Greatest Songs Of The Eighties (Audio CD)
Although I am a huge "fanilow", I was extremely disappointed with this CD. Most of the songs were too painful to listen to; they just weren't meant to be sung by Barry Manilow. I would only recommend purchasing this as a gag gift for someone! I LOVE Barry Manilow's voice & talent, but it would be TORTURE to have to sit and listen to this entire CD.

The neat thing about this is that I am actually hearing the words rather than them being just background noise. The words are terrific and when he sings them, you can close your eyes and imagine yourself there with him.

Now that Barry's done with the "Greatest Songs" series, it's time for some new material. Love ya Barry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Barry covers the eighties well, November 25, 2008
By
This review is from: The Greatest Songs Of The Eighties (Audio CD)
I grew up listening to this great hit songs from the eighties. Nobody sings a love song better than Barry Manilow. My favorite track on this disc is "Islands In The Stream". This is a fun duet that Barry sings with Reba McIntire. The other track I like is "I Just Called To Say I Love You". This track has a light engaging bossanova sound to it. He sounds so romantic on the songs "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" and "Open Arms". Barry sounds good just playing the piano and singing. "I've Had The Time Of My Life" is a good example. This track has a slower tempo than the original, but I still love it. His cover of "Arthur's Theme" is sincere and heartfelt. The back up singers on this track are good, Barry gets help from Chicago front man Jason Sheff on the beautiful "Hard For Me To Say I'm Sorry". Barry goes uptempo on the track "Never Gonna Give You Up". I like the beat and the horns featured on this song. If you like the soft pop songs from the eighties, you will love this disc.

This is a wonderful CD. I've been waiting a long time for Barry to make an 80's CD and I was not disappointed. He did an excellent job! This is a must have for fans!

Just as the case with his previous "hits" of the decade package, Barry does a wonderful job with the tunes listed. One can't help missing his original material, but if you can't have that, then this is the next best thing. Especially pleasing is his "Islands In the Stream" duet with Reba McIntire. Just wonderful.

Long time fan. The cover of Arthur's Theme was ok. The rest were Ramada Inn cover band quality. I'm hoping his new material on "15 Minutes" displays his talents better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Melting my brain synapses as we speak....., June 3, 2011
This review is from: The Greatest Songs Of The Eighties (Audio CD)
If this is adult contemporary music then it's no wonder I want to be a child again. I am no great fan of SuBo and thought nothing could be worse....until now. This c.d. is horrendous. It is scmaltzy, lackluster and is as plastic as the surgery done on Barry. Don't let a candle get too close or the plastic will melt.

Manilow misses the point of all these tunes and tries to orchestrate them with lushness when, the real fact of the matter is, he can't do them as well or improve on them. So, the question is why?

I would have preferred it if he chose songs that were at least interesting. Many great one-hit wonders of the 80's, like Safety Dance and Tainted Love. These, at least, would ward off the shmaltz factor and make the project somewhat interesting.

I saw Barry sing live on T.V. some years ago and, quite frankly, his limited vocal prowess is long gone.

My advice? Avoid like the plague!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Yawn, September 19, 2010

These are not good covers at all. The whole CD ends up sounding like a second-rate lounge act and all the songs are boring. I hated the whole album from start to finish. I also didn't like how slowed down a lot of the songs were from the original.

I bought this barry manilow album for my mom for christmas. She has listened to the entire album and said it was great. It only cost me a few dollars on amazon. Less than $7 even after including the shipping cost. I was originally unsure about purchasing cd's on amazon. But now i know that the products are very good. Thanks again.
