3.0 out of 5 stars Some good tracks, but lacking the Middle East sound March 26, 2010
By Ali
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a strange compilation of music of Arabia. Rather than go for traditional Arabic style music, complete with sweeping vocals and dramatic string orchestras, this album veers away from the kind of Middle Eastern music that evokes chills and romantic illusions. Many of the tracks are surprisingly downbeat, slow, and with hardly a string instrument heard. Instead we hear strumming guitars, and a few loungey songs that seem a bit out of place. Still, there are some very nice songs indeed, including Haytham Kawar's "Joy Dance," but for all it's guitar solos, it could just as easily be Brazillian. Al-Yaman begins the cd with "Allah Wahed," a mellow but upbeat song, that climbs to a pretty and melodic chorus. Emil Zrihan offers the most impressive track, "Mahani Zin," a ten minute song that has many levels that range from slow ballad to upbeat and passionate pop. DuOud ends the compilation with a hypnotic and seductive track called "Zanzibar." Other songs, although pretty, are surprisingly downbeat ballads, and one song in particular, "Sole" sounds totally Brazillian, and it seems to be even sung in Spanish, and it just seems out of place on this cd. The packaging however is really top-notch; Cased in a digipak style cardboard slipcase, and the booklet inside features some photos from the land of the music's origin. The cd itself is designed to look like a vinyl record; very attractive packaging. "Greatest Songs ever: Arabia" is a worthy entry to the series, but is not as strong as the cd's titled "North africa," and Middle East."
