5.0 out of 5 stars Folk Music is Alive and Well, January 16, 2003
This review is from: Greatest Story Never Told (Audio CD)
I just stumbled across John MCutcheon a few weeks ago, and now I wished I'd found his music years ago. This album is simply awesome with its music and its messages. Peace, justice, and tolerance issues are now important than ever and John's songs are just great for restoring some hope for the future. His music is in the tradition of Guthrie, Seeger, and Dylan. There are still a few of us around who like music that touches our souls and uplifts our spirits. I guarantee you'll love this album and be playing its songs over and over. I will see John in concert for the first time in a few weeks, and I can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT IN MY NAME, August 18, 2006

I've been a McCutcheon fan since I was around 12 years old and my parents brought home a tape entitled "What It's Like." I fell in love with his voice, his talent, but most of all his powerful lyrics. This album is a perfect example of the lively, potent, and emotional touch of McCutcheon's music. However, of all the McCutcheon songs I know (and believe me, I know plenty) the anthem "Not in My Name" speaks to my heart like no other protest song ever has. In this war when all sides are convinced that a higher power is on their side, the lyric "I said it in the Bible, in the Torah and in the Koran/what part of 'love your neighbor' don't you people understand" says it all for me. Purchasing this or any John McCutcheon album will be the best decision you've ever made regarding your CD collection.

I have been a John McCutcheon fan for the better part of a decade now--first discovering him not for his children's songs--but for his concert album at Wolf Trap. I have never seen him in concert although I almost did once. But now that I have heard--several times over--this latest CD, I will now find a way to see him. I have to say that I ordered this CD more from the reviews on this site than for any other reason. I was not have a really good month in my own life and so I decided that I probably needed a touch of John McCutcheon to revive my soul a little. And that this album does!!! It is clearly the work of a seasoned songwriter and performer. It is also clearly the work of someone who has a political point of view that he is not afraid to show. There is not a single bad or even mediocre song on this whole album. I am as struck by "Dancing in the Street" as I am by "Not in My Name." I would have to add "When I grow Up" as one of my favorites because at age 60, it is nice to have the insight of someone at age 50 to this whole issue. "Last First Kiss' is a wonderful poem to endearing love and "One in a Million" is both a stunning testament to his mother and a ringing endorsement for every small effort made by every human on the planet to make this a better place for succeeding generations. Inspiring, moving and soul healing--to the highest degree. Give it a listen and see what I can do for your day!!!

I stumbled across a concert with John McCutcheon on a local public access channel and was charmed by his music. His songs have wonderful messages and his singing is very mellow and listenable. I love this album.
