Book Description

February 28, 2008
Before they acquired Babe Ruth or won a single championship, the New York Yankees (nee Highlanders) were a team that inspired the strongest of feelings in baseball circles. Stars such as Jack Chesbro, Hal Chase, and Brooklyner Willie Keeler drew loud followings, and the team made loyal fans of those who disliked the cross-town Giants or Dodgers. Even Ban Johnson prized the franchise, which gave his upstart American League a foothold in the nation's most populous city. Baltimoreans, on the other hand, nurtured an animus toward the team, which only a few years earlier had been called the Orioles. And former Orioles manager John McGraw hatched a plan, along with Giants owner Andrew Freedman, to sabotage the new club. This heavily illustrated volume combines a fully documented history of the deadball-era Yankees with more than 190 photos of the people, places, and events that figured prominently in the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars "MUST HAVE" FOR SERIOUS YANKEE FANS, June 16, 2008
By
This review is from: Greatness in Waiting: An Illustrated History of the Early New York Yankees, 1903-1919 (Hardcover)
Hopefully this is only a first effort by author, Ray Istorico. Baseball fans could use many more, although I suspect that the depth and breadth of research required to put together "Greatness in Waiting" precludes many more volumes. Wonderfully illustrated with almost 200 photographs, Istorico brings the so-called "dead-ball" era alive. Overall quality of writing and story telling is excellent, and after reading the book, Istorico leaves the reader yearning for a return to this more simple and pure form of sport. Buy this book !

This is a great book for baseball fans. Especially Yankee fans. It visits a period in time often overlooked by the other writers. The author makes you feel part of the scene. Great Photos.

A very classy, smart and very significant account of our beloved, and adored Heroes. It left me complete as to somehow different, a knowing of sorts as to why I love the Yankees so much.
