2.0 out of 5 stars trashy teen novel
Being a high school librarian at 28 years of age, I think I can confidently say that this is a trashy teen novel that makes an attempt at telling a decent story. I too was drawn in by the magic of the setting having traveled abroad myself, but beyond that, I found the story to be rather flat and predictable. 4.0 out of 5 stars Grecian Holiday, November 11, 2004

Many people say that this book is a "beach read", and that somehow makes it bad. Well, I disagree with that. This story is about a girl Kelly. Kelly turns down going to a camping/hiking trip with her bossy boyfriend Mike. Mike gets really mad at her, and even more so when she goes on vacation with her sort of friend Jade and Jade's friend Sarah to Greece. In Greece, they just have different things happen, if I explain it'll ruin the story. The language in this book is easy to understand and it hardly ever has any "British-isms". At the beginning, the story sort of drags, but later on, it gets better and you can't stop reading. Jade is sort of an antagonist at times, and so is Mike, but they have Good Moments too. The end was also sort of not how I wanted it, but I still liked Kelly's "speech". I would recommend this book to anyone who would want to read something that isn't unbelievably depressing.

This book was pretty good. It was a true story about someone finding out what they wany from life. It was about Shelly, who is invited to Grece after she turns down an invitaion from her controlling bf. She is having the time of her life w/o him until he showes up unannounced. The story had a nice plot yet I felt myself wanting to know more about Sarah and how she changes from being shy and timid to being outgoing and fun. It was a repition of the same thing: parties, parties, parties. Sarah seemed more deep and interesting yet u don't hear much about her. But, I still enjoyed the love triangle between Shelly, Nick, and Mike. I didn't really like Jade all that much. I thought she gaped in the limelight too much. She had to be the star or she had no fun. It was an attention grabber and well worth the read just not a perfect novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Relatable, September 6, 2004
By

This review is from: Grecian Holiday: Or, How I Turned Down the Best Possible Thing Only to Have the Time of My Life (Mass Market Paperback)
Grecian Holiday is a wonderful novel by Kate Cann. Although it is not quite as lovely as books like The Princess Diaries and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, this novel is entertaining and relatable. Grecian Holiday revolves mainly around the character Kelly who goes on a holiday (or vacation) with two girls she barely knows. She turns down the opportunity to go backpacking around Europe with her boyfriend, Mike, and his mates. The novel at times can drag on a bit, but the story quickly picks up towards the middle and around each little adventure.
Older readers are most likely able to identify with the characters because not too many 15 and 16 year olds go away on vacation alone with their friends. Of course parties, drinking, and clubbing are more closely associated with older teens as well.
What makes the characters relatable is that there is something for everyone. There is the girl who likes to be adventrous and be the center of attention -- the boy magnet, the people person. Then there is the girl who is more reserved, stay at home kind of gal -- a bit afraid to take charge. Then of course you have the girl in the middle, a little bit of everything.
Kelly seems to be the most relatable because of her relationship with every other character. How her boyfriend is controlling, how she wants to be like her outgoing mate Jade, how she wants to show Sarah that she must step out of the box, how she herself wants to discover something more about herself.
To the person who posted a review printed below this one, I would just like to say the ending was realistic. It may not be the fairy tale ending you were hoping for, but its refreshing to have an ending that is more closely related to life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Summer Fluff, June 30, 2002

This book is great, and isn't something that you invest a lot of time building the plot or characters. I truly enjoyed learning a little about Greece, while the characters stories untangled. It was a great summertime novel that I enjoyed.

I too was drawn in by the magic of the setting having traveled abroad myself, but beyond that, I found the story to be rather flat and predictable. I don't think many of my students would identify with the girls' affluence and I think the cover was created to get a reaction. Angus, Thongs, and Full... is a much better read, as well as, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Don't waste your time on this one! Develop some taste! I got the book on preview from the publisher and I plan to send it back.

I must admit I was really surprised at how much I actually enjoyed this book. I had never read anything like this before. I was really able to identify with the characters because I just finished my first year of college. And thats what I liked most cause I could understand where they going through. I loved the characters. Its seems as it was just going to be about Kelly but it wasn't it turned into a story about three completely different girls learning about eachoher and who they really are. This book excellent and I can't wait to read Spanish Holiday! I hope its just as good as this one.

This review is from: Grecian Holiday: Or, How I Turned Down the Best Possible Thing Only to Have the Time of My Life (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a fun story about three girls who go on vacation to ancient Greece. I love how the author Kate Cann showed me how their lives change and how the other girls influenced eachother. There were times when the book wasnt interesting amking me not want to read on, but I did, wondering what exciting thing would happen next. The young adults learned advice that could impact a persons life in a positive way, and the difference in personalities of the main characteristics entertained me while I read. The story of the girls was realistic but absorbing and I would recommend it to most female teens. Though this is the first novel written by Kate Cann that I've read, I plan to read some of her other books including Spanish Holiday.

Follows the vacation (or "holiday") of teenaged British girl, Kelly. A rented house in Greece comes up only days before Kelly is supposed to leave on a hiking trip with her boyfriend, Mike. Well written. Really shows the personalities of the girls as the book develops. You'll fly through the chapters! I related really well to all of the girls. If you have a tee daughter who likes to read definately a good book to add to her collection.
