5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent wrestling book, February 14, 2004

For those who don't know, Greco-Roman wrestling utilizes throws that all occur above the waist. This is a skill that can come into play in folkstyle and freestyle wrestling, as well as judo and NHB matches. For that reason allone, I'd recomend getting this book. The author does an excellent job of showing where control points are for this kind of wrestling, and devides the throws into body, arm, and head-and-arm techniques. He also covers Par Terre, or ground wrestling, from a Greco-Roman point of view. The chapter on basics is fantastic, and there are sections on drilling specific skills, such as the bridge, as well as some basic weight lifting, and even a training program. This very rigorous sport has been given the master treatment by Mr. Martell.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, June 18, 2000
This review is from: Greco-Roman Wrestling (Paperback)
I have been involved with the martial arts for 10 years, the last two I learned ground fighting. I read this book from the perspective of a UFC type fighter. This has been one of the most helpful and mind expanding books I have read. The illistrations are complete and informative. The book is well written (unusual) and comprehensive. The three major lessons I reaped from this are, 1. twist with your takedown 2. don't worry about falling with your opponent because if you twist you can land on top (most of the time) 3. upper body throws that I havent seen. there is also a plethora of throws, takedowns, locks and ideas. buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stay On Your Feet!, March 18, 2004

This is possibly the best book on Greco Roman Wrestling in print. I have a copy of Greco- Roman Wrestling by M. Briggs Hunt which has drawings rather than photos and is no longer in print, which is also very good. Greco Roman teaches holds for above waist, and is practiacal for street fighing, and has holds you can use staying on your feet.
Train hard and have fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Observers, for Understanding and Insight, May 15, 2005
This review is from: Greco-Roman Wrestling (Paperback)
I would like to describe how extremely helpful this book is to a spectator of the sport of wrestling. Since I am merely a fan or observer of this great sport, I don't have the inside knowledge to understand exactly what I am seeing when I watch wrestling. This book has been an excellent reference text and teaching guide for me to learn more about my favorite sport.

Since so much happens in such a short amount of time in wrestling matches - which is one of the reasons this sport is truly special and so exciting to watch (no endless waiting for something to happen, no standing around, no lengthy time-outs) - this book does a wonderful job explaining in depth what actions the observer is witnessing.

I know this book is intended as a training/how-to manual, but I feel it is great for non-participants (cheerers) too. I intended to pass this book on to a family member to encourage participation in the sport, but I am afraid I am keeping it for myself, at least for the time being.

Great photos, easily understandable technical/strategy information, and a nice history/background section - this book has it all. I already had a tremendous appreciation for the sport of wrestling as far as the sportsmanship, strength, endurance, strategy, training, skill, etc. Now I have a greater understanding of the complexities and nuances as well. This has given me wonderful insight into something I could admire, but only slightly understand before. And I am planning to employ some of the flexibility exercises in a non-wrestling context. This is simply a wonderful book for everyone to enjoy, not just wrestlers and coaches.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, June 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Greco-Roman Wrestling (Paperback)
This is simply the best book on Greco roman. It will help any grappler from a freestyle or folkstyle wrestler, to a sambo or jujitsu man. His descriptions are VERY detailed about upper-body wrestling. There are all types of throws, slams, and suplexes taught. Plus there are some good drills for developing your throws in there too.

5.0 out of 5 stars All You Need, June 4, 2002
By
Jackman (Santa Maria ,CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greco-Roman Wrestling (Paperback)
Exellent book which seems to present you with one or two simple yet olympic quality attacks and defenses for each grappling situation one may encounter . Which allow the author to delve into every possible body position applicable to an upper body attack . The subtleties of this style of grappling cannot be explained in words , the sensitivity one gains in this method of wrestling . You need to know this and this is the best book by far to do so with . The throws are quite painful and turn your whole body into an explosive weapon . Note of caution , this is physically demanding , sissy men and ladies need not apply ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Greco-Roman Wrestling, September 16, 2005
This review is from: Greco-Roman Wrestling (Paperback)
Excellent book. I recommend it to all wrestlers, Judo, BJJ and Submission grapplers. Upper body moves and applications are discussed in great detail along with body positioning. The book emphasizes that even though you can not use legs to trips your opponent positioning you body nonetheless is paramount. Will little modification these techniques can be applied to MMA as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars MMA Fanatics Review, November 16, 2002
By
"daylin00" (Whiteville NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Greco-Roman Wrestling (Paperback)
I have to say this book is quite awsome, not just from a Amatuer Wrestling stand point, but Also from a self defense stand point. Oddly in MMA circles we devote huge amounts of time into studying Freestyle takedowns. We often over look the value of Basic Greco tactics. I found the adive on where to grab your oppoent for control to be worth the price of the book. Combine what you read in this book with some Boxing, low kicks, and a few submissions you will have a formatible repitore. Still I have to say this is a book, not a video. If you can't put whats going on together in your mind you might want to but the US coaches syllsbus.
