Book Description

1853990396 978-1853990397 May 2, 2001 2
In the wake of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, poets of the seventh and sixth centuries BC composed epics that covered other parts of the Trojan War story or different areas of Greek mythology. Collectively these poems came to be known by Hellenistic scholars in Alexandria as The Epic Cycle . They also present a wealth of fascinating mythological details and provide absorbing variation on the traditional themes presented in Homer. Why are certain themes frequently used, while others are neglected in various poems? This short study provides a useful introduction to the Cycle for students and scholars of Greek epic and of classical civilization and mythology in general. Preface Abbreviations 1. The Epic Cycle Notes 2. The Titanomachy 3. The Oedipodeia 4. The Tebais 5. The Epigoni 6. The Cypria 7. The Aethiopis 8. The Little Iliad 9. The Sack of Troy 10. The Returns Home 11. 4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview, June 5, 2010
This review is from: Greek Epic Cycle (Bristol Classical Paperbacks) (Paperback)
Davies' work can be tough going in places, but it is well worth the effort. I know of no other book in English that provides such a concise and accurate analysis of the epic cycle. The only criticism I have (and this is minor) is that the author does not spend much time discussing the similarites between Homer and the rest of the cycle. In fact, he has more examples illustrating the differences between them. A good companion book would be The Tradition of the Trojan War in Homer and the Epic Cycle by Jonathan Burgess.

This review is from: Greek Epic Cycle (Bristol Classical Paperbacks) (Paperback)
This book does not contain the actual stories of the Epic Cycle. It is more of a reference book TO the stories. While it is a worthwhile book, when I was purchasing this book, I assume it would the poetic versions of the stories.
