Book Description

October 1, 1986
"Enchiridion" literally means "in one's own hand"—thus "handbook" or "manual." No term better suits this concise but thorough handbook of Greek grammar and syntax: a compact summary of grammatical and exegetical "supports" for anyone who has an introductory knowledge of New Testament Greek and is ready to work at translation and exegesis.

Designed for both deductive and inductive study and employing an easily accessible format, the Greek Enchiridion is a ready and practical reference tool. Its wealth of scriptural examples and the abundance of paradigms and charts makes it the ideal aid for quickly locating the answer to a variety of grammatical questions ranging from the complexities of the language's case system and use of articles to the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of its verbal system. A "verb bank" of principal parts provides a quick parsing guide for many verbs as well as being a useful tool for building one's vocabulary.

Thoroughly indexed for ease of use in looking up material about which one is uncertain, the Enchiridion will prove an invaluable resource for the "student" of Greek wishing to better understand the language and the Scriptures.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Less Is More..., February 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Greek Enchiridion: A Concise Handbook of Grammar for Translation and Exegesis (Spiral-bound)
"Enchiridion" is a compound word from the Greek, meaning roughly "something you can hold in your own hand." In this case the "something" is a modern, well-organised and easy-to-use reference for New Testament Greek. Such a work necessarily leaves much out in order to remain small and manageable, but NT exegetes are unlikely to have only this book in their arsenal of interpretation.

I know of no other work whose author has done such a good job of separating the "must-have" from "nice-to-have" information. All examples are from the New Testament. One of those rare reference books that one can have with him much of the time instead of having it on a shelf! Even though I have A. T. Robertson et al. available, I use this little book regularly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not for novices., March 4, 2006
This review is from: Greek Enchiridion: A Concise Handbook of Grammar for Translation and Exegesis (Spiral-bound)
If youre a beginner, you'll probably find yourself overwhelmed by this book. You're probably better off finishing at least 2 or 3 books on basic Greek before you even start tackling this book. But if you're serious about developing your NT Greek long term, this is a good one to have on your shelf. You'll probably refer to this book often, over time.

For absolute beginners I highly recommend: "Basic Greek in Thirty Minutes a Day (New Testament Greek Workbook for Laymen) by James Found"

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but could be better, June 13, 2009
This review is from: Greek Enchiridion: A Concise Handbook of Grammar for Translation and Exegesis (Spiral-bound)
It is a good guide for basic Greek grammar and vocab. The lay out is a little hard to use for quick reference I also didn't like that it started out with a complex verb form. It is a good Greek reference tool but it could be better I much prefer manual Grammar of the NT by Dana and Mante
