Book Description

7 and upSmelly Old History
Those ancient Greeks tried hard to keep clean--after scraping off the grime, they spread on the grease! At the ancient Olympic games athletes wore nothing but olive oil. And the ladies sloshed on perfumed oils galore. Explore the grisly details of everyday life, from putrid plagues to sizzling sacrifices, and discover if there was a whiff of truth in those meaty myths of gods and monsters.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-An olfactory approach to history. The strength of this series is the idea itself: a short, breezy look at the hygienic habits of various ancient societies. Some of the pages feature scratch-and-sniff panels. They are very subtle, each smelling pretty much the same. According to Dobson, the Greeks probably had a rather pleasant olive-oil odor, perhaps accounting for the fact that of the two, Vile Vikings offers more grossness per page. Although the books feature lots of facts, they both suffer from a somewhat confusing organization, as readers bounce around from myths to facts, with some non-hygiene information thrown in. Both have funny, full-color cartoons, an activities page, and a rather clunky poem. While not pretending to do more than scratch the surface of what life was like in these societies, these books may give students enough of a whiff to want to read further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smelly Old History, April 20, 2002

This review is from: Greek Grime (Smelly Old History) (Paperback)
All of Mary Dobson's "Smelly Old History" books are an excellent way for elementary students to learn history and take whiffs of the many foul smells along history's timeline. The kids get so excited to smell the next foul smell they forget they are learning historical facts as they go. My first grade boy loves the books, but loves scratching the smells best. Some of the facts are a bit beyond 1st grade and younger, but they will still love the books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders, who have some knowledge of ancient history and can remember names of people and important events in history. Excellent and fun choice for any elementary age student as a gift or for school.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, February 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Greek Grime (Smelly Old History) (Paperback)
I thought this book was terrible. The smells were of only two varieties -- floral or sulphuric. The history lessons were poor and disjointed, and my two boys quickly lost interest.
