Editorial Reviews

Pioneers of reinvented folk, Kristi and Stathis remix traditional demotika songs to reflect their own experiences of urban life in Greece. A previous release by the acclaimed duo topped the World Music Chart for five months, and they are once again set to shake up the scene with Greekadelia: this is Greek folk as it has never been heard before.

What happens when two clever Greek musicians sing traditional tunes and play an Indian harmonium, a bendir frame drum, and a lauto lute with live looping and electronica? A unique sound is created that bends toward meditative South Asia, or enters a time-warp to around 1968 and the psychedelic musical revolution in the Bay Area . . . or, better and more apt, a hashish den in old Piraeus or Izmir. The music is mesmerizing, beautiful. The folk songs are taken from villages around Greece. The second track, for instance, is a sailor's song from the Dodecanese Islands and track 4, Halassia Mous, comes from Epirus at the northwest corner near Albania. Other melodies come from Thrace, Thessaly, Crete, and Asia Minor [i.e., old Turkey]. Kristis Stassinolpoulou's voice brings melancholy of absence and loss throughout (including beauty of youth, approaching death, and a curse), reflecting rembetika sensitivities even in dances. Stathis Kalviotis's metered plucking, drone, recorded sample ornamentation, and back-up vocals provide the architecture and texture of sound. The steady, slow, rhythmic music swirls, envelopes the listener, and spills into the potent uzo and raki glasses. Take out and twirl the handkerchief while dancing and bending the knee. Thus, this is an ethnic folk music duo with a modern global outlook.
