society's latest oxymoron,
This review is from: Green Careers For Dummies (Paperback)
'Green Careers for Dummies' is society's latest oxymoron, as it's really for smart people who realize that we are, by necessity, transitioning to a green economy in which the jobs of both the near and distant future will require a different kind of worker who brings to the job the value and knowledge of environmental responsibility, along with the requisite array of soft/personal skills, deep subject matter knowledge, and technical skills. Carol McClelland does a wonderful job with this exciting new book, giving her readers the industry-centered information and resources they need to help begin the discovery of their very own green career niche. Highly recommended.

Finally! A Green Career Book That Makes Sense,
This review is from: Green Careers For Dummies (Paperback)
Finally! A refreshingly thorough and extremely helpful book about the current green economy in general and the future of green careers specifically.
Carol McClelland, PhD has done it again. A noted author of four other wildly helpful books, McClelland has taken her passion for guiding people to discover fulfilling careers aligned with their values and turned her attention to helping people find innovative was to live, work, and play more sustainably, all while marveling at the inspiring wisdom of nature. In Green Careers For Dummies, McClelland not only encourages you to follow your heart's passion and start-up a green career, she shows you exactly how. Divided into six parts, Green Careers For Dummies explores the emerging green frontier and helps you, step-by-step, find your green focus; all while helping you wrap your mind around the more than 50 industries that make up the green economy. No small feat! Part III is the heart of McClelland's book. In it, she explores the multi-faceted world of opportunities for people seeking green careers. She explores jobs for those interested in caring for the earth and managing natural resources; jobs in alternative energy, in rebuilding the infrastructure, and careers to help shape the green economy. McClelland rounds out this section by showing ways you can provide green products and services, while inspiring and motivating more sustainable action. At the start of the 21st century, we've all become more conscious of the green movement, and what it means to go green. Some of us are taking small steps to green our lives while others are fully committed to creating a sustainable life career. For those people who really want to make a difference in the world by staring-up a sustainable green career, Green Careers For Dummies is the book for you!

Green Moving Target,
By Bill Wodrich "Sirius" (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Green Careers For Dummies (Paperback)
Carol McClelland, Ph.D. took on the challenge of capturing the current state of an industry that is exploding as the ink dries. She does an outstanding of job of revealing the most salient facts and terms as well as giving the reader the tools to continue resourcing trends to adapt their plans. Carol is able to guide the green career explorer because she has been part of the green revolution for years. She rests this knowledge of the emerging green economy on her solid base as a leader in career transition. I am a green career counselor myself and continually update myself through Carol's website, Green Career Central, as well as through the resources she outlines in this book.

Excellent roundup of what you need to know,
By
This review is from: Green Careers For Dummies (Paperback)
"Green Careers For Dummies" will put you on the path to knowing everything you need to know or consider if you're looking for work in the sometimes loosely defined world of green jobs.
The key chapter is the third, where author Carol McCelland tackles these topics: What constitutes a green job Discovering where your skills are needed Finding the money in the green economy Understanding how to identify possible paths into your career Knowing what it takes to find your green career One of the frequent complaints about the green economy is the lack of definition of what is green and what is not. Does it mean you have to go work for a nonprofit or camp out in trees? Of course not. As McClelland makes clear, plenty of corporate jobs and small businesses are out there establishing good environmental standards, creating or using products and paying attention to what is going on in the world. And this book will help you find your place. Included in the book is a guide to terminology, help with "greening" your resume, advice for job interviews and more. This is an ideal starting point for anyone even vaguely thinking about trying to switch direction, as well as those ready to get started.

Good Round Up of Green Career Opportunities,
This review is from: Green Careers For Dummies (Paperback)
The real strength of this book, and the reason I recommend it, is found in Chapters 7 - 13. The author provides a wonderful overview of the many jobs and careers that are being created or reshaped with the evolution of the "green economy." She also provides good historical perspective and a credible future direction for this evolution. She offers links to numerous industry-specific web sites and professional organizations related to each of the many industries she reviews--which is where the real research can begin. Aside from these chapters, this book is like all books in the "Dummies" series, devoting many pages to very basic information. These sections may be too basic for some, just right for others. Naturally, the reader quickly recognizes that only a few of the industries and professions discussed here will be accessible to them based on their qualifications and experiences.
As with any job or career search, the proof is in the hard work of carrying out the activities. I have coupled my use of "Green Careers" with Richard Bolles 2011 edition of "What Color Is Your Parachute?" A powerful combination, indeed. It is worth noting that Carol McClelland offers a web site, www.GreenCareerCentral.com, where people who are past the basics of how to select a career might want to visit.

for dummies is right...save your $,
By
This review is from: Green Careers For Dummies (Kindle Edition)
this book is relatively worthless. The author relates EVERYTHING to global warming! there are quite a few other environmental problems that 'Green Careers' address. The 'job categories' are all simply rearranged words to include green tags, you read one of the lists and it applies to all the others-common sense. The value is in some of the websites she includes (which could be found easily on your own) wish i would have saved the $10. ps i am a non traditional student (middle aged and returned to college a second time) senior in environmental studies.
