3.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected, December 6, 2005

This review is from: Green Day: Critical Review - American Idiot (DVD)
It's my fault, I'm sure, but I thought I was ordering a DVD with real concert footage and then people talking about what they saw. What I got was 5-15 seconds of concert footage of Greenday, footage of other bands playing old stuff, and a bunch of Brits talking about why they did or didn't like that part of the CD for minutes on end. It was very hard to even pay attention to the concert footage because of the way the DVD is edited (multi-screens showing at the same time). For me, I felt this was a waste of my money, but that's me.

Some of the good parts were seeing some rare footage of The Ramones and then guitar lessons, but other then that felt like I got ripped off on this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars You are really looking for "Bullet In A Bible" not this waste, December 26, 2005
This review is from: Green Day: Critical Review - American Idiot (DVD)
Misleading DVD. Should not even be sold by Amazon. If you want the Green Day concert DVD, buy "Bullet In A Bible".

This DVD is basically a DVD of Critics talking about the band with minimal concert footage. A waste of time and money. Bad gift for a Green Day fan.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this like the plague, January 5, 2006
This review is from: Green Day: Critical Review - American Idiot (DVD)
I thought a "critical review" of American Idiot would involve music critics and historians discussing the rock opera genre and where AI fits into it, the history of political protest in punk, the development of AI from Green Day's earlier work and how their musical influences are reflected or departed from in this album, etc. I got none of that from this DVD. It's five or six random people saying banal or idiotic things about the album. None of them seems more than vaguely aware that AI even tells a story, much less has anything to say about the characters or the narrative structure. They helpfully inform us that AI is "political". They identify Green Day's influences as the Ramones and the Buzzcocks (and that's it, apparently). Perhaps more to the point, half the performance footage of the band is from MTV's Storytellers and the rest is from random German and Italian MTV performances. There's nothing special about the footage and no original interviews. In sum: NO ONE should bother with this. Buy Bullet in a Bible. Or just set $15 on fire.
