Big disappointment - the DVD, at least,

This review is from: Green Day: In Performance (DVD)
I received an advance copy of the DVD from this set. I haven't seen the book, so I can't comment on that at all.The DVD is a low-budget re-hash of a bunch of Green Day footage that most fans have seen before, intercut with sound bites from supposed authorities on punk rock history. Some of it is repeated within this DVD multiple times! Not only does it not add anything new, it's really sort of a dry re-telling of the history of the band - boring, cliched, and unoriginal. In other words, you really get the feeling that someone thought they could make some money by re-packaging footage that they didn't have to pay for (there's no full performances of any song on the entire DVD) and marketing it as something that actually comes from the band (it doesn't, as far as I can tell). It's so bad that when the first scene comes up - some girl talking about Green Day in comical hyperbole - I really thought for a second that that scene was a joke, a la the opening of the Nirvana video "Live Tonight Sold Out". Alas, it turns out the people making this video were dead serious, and unfortunately continue to follow the same formula all the way through. If you're really looking for insight into Green Day in a DVD, get "Bullet in a Bible" instead, if you don't have it already. If you've seen "Bullet" already, then this DVD is certainly a complete waste of time. |
