About the Author

Eric Koester is general counsel of Appature Inc. and a former business attorney with Cooley LLP. He has started three businesses focused on environmental and technology consulting, website design, and mobile software. He is also the author of What Every Engineer Should Know About Starting a High-Tech Business Venture (CRC Press, 2009). Eric graduated from the business school at Marquette University and the George Washington University School of Law.

Eric Koester is the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Zaarly (www.zaarly.com), a mobile marketplace named one of Fast Company's 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2012. Eric has been named one of the 40 under 40 for 2012 in Washington, DC by the Washington Business Journal, a Rising Star in Washington State and has been a frequent writer, speaker and advisor in the areas of technology, startups, green business, startup finance and legal matters.

Prior to founding Zaarly, Eric was the VP Operations & General Counsel of Appature Inc., a business intelligence software company, and a former attorney at Cooley LLP with a practice focused on emerging technology companies, venture capital firms and investment banks, with particular emphases on venture capital and bank financings, corporate partnerships, commercial agreements, intellectual property licensing, public offerings, and mergers and acquisitions. Eric is a graduate of the business school at Marquette University and a graduate of The George Washington University School of Law. Eric is also a certified public accountant.

Prior to joining Cooley, Eric held financial and accounting-related positions at Morgan Stanley and Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. While attending law school, Eric held positions in the Enforcement Division of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) (formerly NASD, Inc.) assisting with ongoing securities industry enforcement proceedings, as a Summer Associate at the Government Accountability Office in Washington, D.C., and in the legal department of the Health Industry Group Purchasing Association (HIGPA) focusing on issues of antitrust in the healthcare contracting industry.

Eric is married to Allison Koester, a Professor of Accountancy at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. They have two pugs, Bailey and Riley. Eric loves to travel and his lifelong goal is to make it to all 100 of the Hillman Wonders of the World. So far, 42 down... lots to go.
