Editorial Reviews

Review

Filled with stunning photographs and quotes from L.M. Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables), this independent press book features a gorgeous traveling bag as well as other period yet wonderfully contemporary designs. -- --Library Journal

This charming collection of knitwear pieces features knits themed on the characters from the Green Gables series you know and love: Matthew, Marilla, Gilbert, Diana, and of course, Anne herself... The book was published in agreement with the heirs of Lucy Maud Montgomery, so the book also contains a wonderful treasure trove of photos of the author and Prince Edward Island (the setting for the Anne books), as well as quotes from the books scattered throughout. --Wooly Wonka Fibers

This book is just beautiful to look at. --Knitting Scholar

Author and designer Joanna Johnson has been able to capture the essence of all that is Avonlea with eight delightful knitting projects. Each piece offers up touches of texture, color, and interest, while remaining subtly simple and fun to work. There is literally something for everyone, whether you favor colorwork, lace, or cables. Johnson has lovingly and thoughtfully brought Green Gables to life in every image. She even includes photos and quotes from the archives of Lucy Montgomery's life and home. --Tabetha Hedrick Knitwear Design

Fans of Anne of Green Gables will be utterly charmed by this new knitting book by Joanna Johnson. --Knitty.com

The heart of the book is the patterns, and they are lovely, accessible and wearable patterns that really capture the essence of the characters. You ll find eight patterns, each inspired by a specific character from the books; each pattern is accompanied by a quote from the book, and is worn by a model who captures the personality of the character. --Black Bunny Fibers

As a knitter and a long-time Anne fan this book seemed written just for me. Alas, I received it as a Christmas gift and was sorely disappointed. On the knitting side, the book is a very small volume with eight patterns, none of which seem particularly inventive, unique or historically relevant. On the writing side, there isn't any! No descriptions of the patterns or finished objects (though the accompanying photographs of the knitwear are pretty good), and there's no introduction to the book by the author, which seems odd; one would expect some sort of story about how she discovered the Anne books, what motivated her to write this book, why she chose the patterns she did, etc. There are brief quotes from the book accompanied by photos from the LM Montgomery archives that give a little context, but it's pretty literal: "Here's a picture of the kitchen, here's a quote about Marilla, here's a pattern for Marilla's apron". For me, it just felt like a collection of patterns that was designed first, and then given names that would fit the Anne of Green Gables characters as a way of marketing the collection. It's too bad, because with a little bit of actual writing and a few more innovative/interesting patterns this book could have been great.

I was disappointed with Green Gables Knits because it had so few patterns. Why not include Marilla's shawl and a few of Anne's sweaters. I surely expected more from this book.

This book is way too thin for the price. (Only 1/8 of an inch! I couldn't believe it when I measured.) There are only 8 patterns -- none of them particularly special -- and not much else, making it far less appealing than many of the nicer knitting magazines. I was expecting some comments about Anne of Green Gables to go with the patterns. What a disappointment!

I really like the patterns in this book, but I was hoping for more than 8 patterns. Every pattern is presented both written and charted. I need to finish what is on my needles right now, before I start Miss Stacey's shawl... oh! that one is SO lovely. Then Di's hat.... and maybe Marilla's apron.

This little book fits nicely in my bag and I can see several patterns I would like to try right away. The nice thing about the patterns here is that there is a little bit of everything, so if I were to knit them all, it would not feel repetitive. After my Christmas knitting is done, I will definitely start casting on!

My mother gifted this darling book to me for Christmas and it's wonderful. 8 patterns and yes, I wish there were more but perhaps there will be another GG Knits since it's widely desired, I certain!! I'm working on Diana's Hat and even if I make only 2 patterns in the entire book, it's still a keeper and must for any Lucy Maud Montgomery/knitting addict!

I loved reading the Anne of Green Gables books when I was a girl and I purchased this as much for the memories of reading the books when I was younger as I did for the knitting patterns. Being a knitter, I am pleased with the patterns. They are beautiful in their simplicity.

I have enjoyed everything I have made. The only think I have left is the carry-all. Everything was clearly written and fun to knit.
