5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Story... September 17, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic 1908 novel "Anne of Green Gables" continues to captivate readers of all ages with its heart-warming story of an orphan girl coming of age on a farm in rural Prince Edward Island, Canada.

As the story opens, middle-aged bachelor Matthew Cuthbert and his spinster sister Marilla decide to take in an orphan boy to help out on their farm in the village of Avonlea. By mistake, the orphanage sends a scrawny red-haired young girl named Anne Shirley. Anne has known only poverty and neglect; the Cuthberts, after some debate, elect to keep her.

Anne will be a challenge to raise. She is honest, obedient, and hardworking; she is also prone to being distracted by her own imagination. The result is a series of often hilarious misadventures as she grows up.

Anne will make friends in Avonlea, including best friend Diana Barry. She will be spurred to academic excellence by rival and admirer Gilbert Blythe. At the end of the novel, she will earn a rare opportunity to go to college. However, when death strikes her foster family, the sixteen year-old Anne will suddenly have to make mature choices about her family and future.

"Anne of Green Gables" is very highly recommended as an entertaining reading experience. It is also the first of a series of novels about the life and adventures of Anne Shirley, also highly recommended.

A simple mistake brought an orphan girl instead of an orphan boy to Green Gables, and she and the adult brother and sister who took her in were all the better for it. I never read this until I was an adult and visited the area during a cruise stop. I decided to get it for my great-granddaughters and hope they enjoy it enough to want to read the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Young Girls April 22, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I got married this spring, to a woman who loved and obsessed over Anne of Green Gables when she was younger. We are going this summer to Prince Edward Island on a trip on which she can pretty fully indulge in her Anne Shirley fantasies. :) In preparation for our trip, I agreed to read Anne of Green Gables, which I, although reading plenty as a child, missed because I was a boy. Even though I agreed to read it, I didn't have the highest expectations for the novel. I had enjoyed the movie as a child and so assumed that I would like it, but I ended up being utterly charmed. This is much more than a girl book.

I guess it's just impossible not to be sucked in by the idyllic world of the novel. A spirited, humorous, and kind orphan girl who enlivens life for everyone she encounters. Two solid, if unimaginative, old siblings who find their world turned upside down by this spirit that they could never have imagined. A beautiful setting that is beautifully rendered. It's an almost archetypal paradise that's inescapably appealing.

And the writing is simply beautiful. I kept marveling at how the novel worked so well despite my having remembered most of the scenes from the movie. It did just because the prose was so vivid and graceful. The natural descriptions were brilliant, but not overwrought. The dialogue and humor were sharp. The emotions weren't maudlin but were perfect-pitched and authentic.

Another writer could not have written this book. It is a true classic that is not just for young girls.
