Editorial Reviews

This witty comedy anticipated such films as Local Hero and The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill... and marked an early screen appearance by Richard Burton (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Becket). Here he is the "local hero" who leads a rebellion by an English coastal community against meddlesome government bureaucrats who threaten an ancient native custom--illicit smuggling. The redoubtable Roger Livesey (I Know Where I'm Going) plays a ship's captain who is extremely fond of his own cargo--illegal brandy. Reporter Honor Blackman (Goldfinger) uncovers the plot, but falls in love with Burton, as events spiral toward a hilarious conclusion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Ealing-style comedy, September 15, 2008
This review is from: Green Grow the Rushes [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Please ignore the other review for this title, as that reviewer based his comments on a very inferior ep/6-hour mode version. The Home Vision version - the one with the predominantly green cover, with b&w cast photos - is of excellent quality, recorded in the SP/2-hour mode, digitally mastered and with very good sound quality.

The film itself, though not an actual Ealing comedy, is very much in that mold, along the lines of "Tight Little Island" (aka "Whiskey Galore!"); if you enjoyed that movie, you will like this one a lot too. Plus it has a very young Honor 'Pussy Galore' Blackman paired up with a young Richard Burton. And there's Roger Livesey, too, from "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp"! All around, a most enjoyable post-WWII British comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!! Happy!!, May 12, 2011

This review is from: Green Grow the Rushes (VHS Tape)
My order arrived two (2) days after it was ordered! Needless to say, I was elated. My video was shrink-wrapped & in perfect condition. What a joy it was (and will continue to be) to watch a film that I have waited a long time to re-see (I used to rent it from time to time when neighborhoods had video stores -- mine was wonderful). My thanks for both the film & the seller.

Leading Men: Royal Wedding/Green Grow the Rushes This is a very poor copy of two very good movies. This VHS is obviously a copy of a copy. It is recorded at the slowest (poorest quality) video speed. The image is very contrasty, i.e. blacks and whites but most of the mid-tones are no longer there. If, like me, you may have wanted a better copy than the VHS recording from an unknown broadcast many years ago, this product is not the answer. It is perhaps the worst image quality I have ever seen - among other no-name, bootleg or public domain material - and anyone who pays for a copy of this has just been had.
