Attracted to clean technology, read this book!,
By
This review is from: Green Investing: A Guide to Making Money through Environment Friendly Stocks (Paperback)
Jack Uldrich creates an interesting and very well researched guide for those attracted to clean technology; both the beginner investor wanting to make
environmentally aware investments and experienced investors looking for information on wind, solar, biofuels and other clean tech will benefit from this book. I would recommend for those people interested in environmental investing in specific technologies like biofuels (chapter 4), solar investing (chapter 5) or wind investing (chapter 6) read that chapter first. Then proceed to chapter 7, Alternative Energies, where Green Investing covers geothermal, fuel cell, wave and clean coal investment opportunities. In my opinion chapter 8 on energy conservation shows the most promise for short term investing, in regards to clean technologies, and make the purchase price of the book a great investment - well worth the purchase price. To go on the author, Jack Uldrich, does a great job of presenting facts and research on the green tech companies and to his credit he keeps the passion (hype) out of the presentation. Having read several of his books, and heard him speak on a few occasions, if you want passion on future technology you can't go wrong with one of his other books, in fact you must read: "Jump the Curve" (2008) and "The Next Big Thing is Really Small" (2003).

I'm an experienced investor and found this book useful as an overview of the state of green investing. The advice seems objective and fair.

Starting point for investment ideas,
By
This review is from: Green Investing: A Guide to Making Money through Environment Friendly Stocks (Paperback)
I wanted to read this book because President Obama is making significant changes to our energy policy, and I thought that it would be beneficial to read a book on green investing. I really like the structure of the book. The author writes about the "green" industry, which includes subfields such as solar, biofuels, or wind power. He makes his case of why he thinks that there are growth opportunities and then lists companies within that industry. Each company listed gets a short description, reasons to be bullish, and reasons to be bearish. I absolutely love this book because it gives me a starting point for investment ideas. But, it is only a starting point. I would never recommend anyone buying stocks based just on the information in this book without doing more research.

Heard about Solyndra?,
By
This review is from: Green Investing: A Guide to Making Money through Environment-Friendly Stocks (Paperback)
Perhaps one of the worst indictments of this book is the endorsement of the now-bankrupt Solyndra, the "Green" company that not only failed to compete and generate capital for its solar panels, but who along the way spent its PR credit with the fashionably environmental caucus that espouses going green at any cost. The cost to American tax-payers was $535 million, and the cost to investors? Who knows. Here's the real key to picking winners--stay away from whatever the government invests in. They don't have the expertise or the motive to choose the real winners in the green industry. Furthermore, the prediction made in this book about the coming government initiatives, such as cap and trade, that will presage the coming explosion of green businesses won't come to fruition any time soon, and for good reason. Predictably, this book is already well out-of-date.

I ordered the book as a resource/reference for buying "Green" stocks.
When the book arrived I was rather surprised at the size of it but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in information. The book is an easy read so if you plan on buying Green stocks now or in the future the book is a great source of information on this emerging market. One of the chapters that I found most interesting was on ethanol fuel. The book gave me a better understanding how the product is made and some of the drawbacks in getting the product to the marketplace. The book also has a list of small and large companies that are developing Green products or already have Green products in the marketplace. At the time of this review the list is dated but, of these companies some have products that are beginning to show signs that they can compete with fossil fuel and coal.

This book on investing is so different from others I've read - in the best of ways. The author gives valuable information on how to select companies that are applicable to investments of any kind - not just green companies. I got more than I looked for when I bought this.

Where is Rachel Carson now that we need her? The book is little more than a laundry list of public companies offering green products or services. There is absolutely nothing unique or incisive here. Don't waste your green. Reread Silent Spring.
